My stepmother grow up on the island, her father was a guard there. it was something she never really talked about, at least to me, and we only really did shortly before she passed. She told me about taking the ferry to the city every day for school and coming back, and how it was a little hard to make friends as much of the time you were pretty stuck in a small area. i wanted her to add to the oral history of the children who grew up there but sadly she didn't last long enough to make it back down. She lived there from being very young to a teenager, so got to know what all was going on. I really wish i'd learned more about it from her.

Hey, I volunteered at the island for over 200 hours and learned a ton about it. While you got a lot of the stuff right you missed an insane amount of information. The island was called Alcatraz after the Americans took it from the Spanish. Theres an underground prison that you completely missed. We used it during the civil war to house confederates. While the prison was built on top of that underground one the real history went down in those caves. And then you didnt even bother to mention anything about the native Americans

What I find strange is there is basically no information on Marvin Hubbard one of the inmates in the hold up of alcatraz he was actually a cousin of mine my great grandmother had a scrap book about him he was a petty car thief and was only sent to alcatraz after escaping from 7 maximum security prisons. she had a hand written letter from his mother that stated they can't hold him so they're sending him to the rock he'll either escape or die trying. If that wasn't ominous enough

Absolutely brilliant thanks so much for sharing I found this one both interesting and entertaining. Thought it was funny you could buy postcards at Alcatraz. If you go by the hate comments Ive been getting after I commented on the sad state of the old abandoned once beautiful homes and neighbourhoods in Detroit getting a wish you were here postcard from Alcatraz would be like getting a postcard from my own prison island home of Australia during the Wuhn Flu pandemic.

I guess there aren't many ppl. left who has ties to Alcatraz. My dad actually was actually a guard there. At the time I would have been afraid, but, now I wished I had lived on the island. We lived in Fresno and it was close enough and my dad commuted. My dad was only there for a short time and then the prison was closing. I think I would of been afraid of rats more than the prisoners.

Sounds like Kentucky State Penitentiary here where I live, which I was a CO for almost 18 months, as far as the respect between inmates & CO's but our penitentiary is single man cells & a lot of inmates I talked to while on duty there said they'd rather be there even on a non fatal charge because of that reason & we're the only Maximum Security Prison in KY because of Death Row.

I visited the rock once (on the tour boat. I do suggest anyone visiting San Francisco, make a reservation to visit, although visiting once is enough. I think it was closed because it was expensive to operate. That along with no room to expand. If you want to build a Federal prison now, a capacity of 336 just won't do.

Anna Thumann wrote an interesting story of her life as an Alcatraz kid in Alcatraz Schoolgirl. I just did a search on Growing up on Alcatraz and discovered more than one written by children who lived there as school kids. I'm going to have to get my Kindle out.

One of my criminal justice professors back in the 1980s lived there for a few years as his father was a guard there. The only thing he mentioned about it was the sight of the island while riding the daily ferry to and from high school over in San Francisco.

Besse Higgenbottem and Penny were trying to teach Happy about Alcatraz! The Mighty Bee did an episode about it! It was pretty funny because the guard thought Besse and Penny were prisoners that escaped.

I worked at Terminal Island Prison, where Capone and other inmates ended up for medical. We had houses but it was mostly for the upper management. It was pretty pleasant place and we had a guard tower there.

Great episode. I was able to visit Alcatraz once. Had forgotten the guards families lived there.
I would like Sing Sing as an episode. TIA for consideration.

Not all guards lived on the island. He never spoke about it, but he was a guard for two years. I think it was too much for him after surviving Pearl Harbour.

Eastern state penitentiary, family is from Philly and we would go there for Halloween. They had Steve Buscemi narrate the recorded section.
