any guesses as to why we don't conceptualize the establishment of the Wild West as something greatly impacted by women!
anytime I learn that women were more involved with a historical event or period than what they are credited for, I can't help but think of how much women's contributions have been erased from history, particularly women of colour, disabled women, queer women, and trans women. It would be cool to have a series dedicated to highlighting the contributions of marginalized peoples, especially in areas where we typically think of white men as the biggest contributors

My great-grandmother was a madam with a boarding house near the docks in Eastern Massachusetts. She ran the only Kosher brothel around - although I am not quite sure what kosher means in the context of a brothel! She did many of the things noted here, including starting the first 'ladies bank' giving interest-free loans to women. Probably had a piano in the parlour, though, in the 1870's, not likely automatic.

I love that these women took full control of something that was likely forced upon them. Like women didn't have much options in terms of education and if they didn't want to marry at age 15 (because who would, prostitution seems like the only thing available to them to survive. I love that they just ran with it like fine this is what you want watch me make millions out of it

In your comments you forgot to add medical laudanum as a possible reason for overdosing. Laudanum was a mix of alcohol and opium to minimise pain. And was very addicting. Many opium Den's were around in those old town's and still are to be found in China towns across America. Actually a rather interesting part of history behind it, just thinking out loud.

Men, do not hesitate for one moment to place a court-issued restraining order against your female partner if you feel your safety and health is in jeopardy.
