Actually maggots in a wound isn't necessarily a bad thing. They will eat the dead tissue, along with the bacteria that would (under any other circumstance) cause a raging deadly infection. They actually do use maggots in some wound care techniques. Along with leeches to promote new blood flow to dying tissue and wounds, especially when it comes to reattching body parts. But obviously you'd never want to rely on them in situations like this. the maggots and leeches used in the medical field are specifically grown for theor use in labs and not just collected from the wild.

Wow! What an amazing young woman! How wild is it that she was so perfectly prepared with the knowledge of that exact environment native language to guide her! R. i. p to her dear mother and the other victims of this tragedy. Thank you so much for sharing this. I feel like hearing these stories helps me appreciate my life so much more and helps to remind me how small my troubles in life really are in comparison to what they could be.

Anyone who says god protected her or saved her I disagree. Her father teaching her the things he did are why she lived. Without the stuff she learned from her father she would have been just another person that died and that film maker would be considered the only lucky person that should have been on that flight.

Imagine never having seen a blonde pale white person before in your entire life, and then finding the girl at 8: 50 in your remote fishing hut.
With those slight features, pixie blonde hair and creepy blacked out eyes, she really did look like some fairy water spirit.

This woman is a badass! I would have been gone 2 days in. This kind of stuff makes me believe in God. I know she was equipped with knowledge of the jungle but still, she was around poisonous animals, animals that can eat you whole and bleeding! It's gotta be a miracle

This has got to be one of the most incredible stories of human survival in all of history. Everything she endured is far worse than what was depicted in the movie Miracles Still Happen. Very few people then or now could have survived what she went through.

Nearly claimed the life of someone who was NEARLY on the flight. Well he wasn't, so he was okay. Nearly is not the same as actually being there. Car nearly hit me the other day as I crossed the road, if id walked a bit slower it would have done. See my point?

I read part of the book that Juliana wrote, candy was not the only thing she had to eat - she remembered that her mother had packed a sandwich and she had to go back to the plane to get the sandwich from her mother who was of course deceased

Traipsing through the jungle would scare the crap out of me.
Alligators in the water would have sent me back to land where I would have been in greater danger.
I definitely would have found a big stick to protect myself.

By the time this incident had taken place, Fernando Belaunde Terry was still the Peruvian president yet it remains unclear if he was still in the presidential palace in Lima when the aircraft carrier had crashed in the wilderness.

Yeah. I would have made it. My dad was an Army Ranger in WWII and a Forest Ranger for 35 years. He taught me and my bro and sis a lot. A vacation to him was camping in -30 temps for a weekend.

Hungry? Who could have an appetite when you have maggots burrowing into your own ARM!
OR, the bright side is that she probably could've ate some of them, if her survival depended on it.

What an amazing girl to survive such an ordeal at 17. Truly a miracle she survived the fall. I've got to watch the documentary about this. I would love to meet this brave woman. Amazing!

This storyteller is either lying or she is. Being in shock has nothing to do with how much you're bleeding. And if she had a concussion, as he said, she couldn't remember any of this.

What a wonderful story. Thank you. And no, I don't think I would have survived, since I know very little about nature and the oudoors is alien to me. Joe Figueiredo

her survival from falling out of a plane is one in a trillion. She must have some angels looking out for her, guiding her way out of the forest.
