then popular what the hell are you smoking? the is runs on laissez-faire capitalism with so restrictions in place that are ineffective and meaningless. the US switch over to laissez-faire capitalism in the late 1970s and early 1981 we cost to call it Reaganomics. Before that, we used a Keynesian Economics. Keynessian Economics was a system that recognized corporations and the state as key partners in the economy. the system accounted for two simple mathematic truths. Corporate growth if left unchecked would grow until it collapsed the economy and too much regulation would prevent growth in the economy. so I tried to ballet the 2 forces creating a mixed capitalist / socialist economy.
there are 3 key parts to the system.
high taxes on corporations and the rich as well as a highly regulated economy.
government programs, projects, and institutions founded by these taxes and a large system of social programs for the public good. AKA a working post office publicly founded hospitals and vaccines reacher leads, public transport companies, social security taxes.
government investment in the corporate project, technological development, companies getting a say in the regulations that affect them, and the rich having a larger rule in political life.
If you can tell we only keep part 3 parts one and 2 were killed on the altar of corporate greed in 1981 and the country has been screaming downhill into economic disaster after disaster for the last 40 years. with once-in-a-life team economic disasters happening every 10 years or so.
Keynesian Economics was not perfect mind you. it is the middle ground between economic extremes and it there for had slower growth than the bat sh-t system we have know. social programs cost a lot of money as did public institutions so large parts of the government's time and money were spent on them. there was always a debate on regulation and government interaction with the economy.
But compared to the train reach of today it sounds amazing.
the main reason why the Keynesian Economics model was invented and used was not to build a better economy but to prevent the poor and the rich for burning the countries to the ground in class conflict and or economic collapse.
this stability hurt the rich keeping them in check to prevent the disaster and thy convinced the governments of the US and UK to overturn this economic system in the 1980s. lead to tons of money for the rich and tons of problems for everyone else.

Remember, back then only land owners could vote. So most men and all women throughout the UK (of GB and Ire) (and a lot of countries in Europe) couldn't vote and therefore put pressure on their government to provide for all. The same thing would happen today given the same circumstances if only landowners could vote. their priorities are elsewhere if not kept in check. I'm on the fence about the term genocide (people weren't deliberately killed, but greed, arrogance, and neglect are undeniable. Ironically, it was the Whig Party that fermented the mistakes that exacerbated the famine, a party of progressive relatively anti-monarchists. and not so much the Tories. The former would become the Liberal Party, the latter the Conservatives. The Whigs, in all their 'progressiveness', misunderstood the new 'modern economic theories' of the day. Being progressive and liberal by attempting untested new doctrines using the populace as guinea pigs always seems to end in disaster and in those disasters is wisdom reluctantly created and new balances and common senses established. We can see it today throughout the West, where unfettered and untested progression will no doubt cause massive pains to many when we look back in the future.

It's no different then today! What people do not realize is that the so-called war in Ireland in the 1960's-70's between the Catholics. and the protestant's was actually a war between the Irish, and the British! The so-called Orange Boy's who now control Northern Ireland is actually a British Political group that could not gain office in Britain, so they forced themselves on the Irish people of Northern Ireland! The British need to get the hell out of Ireland and Scotland altogether! And leave those people alone!

Trevelyan wasnt entirely wrong. The last thing you do is prop up bad business. If no govt net existed, ppl would make wiser choices. LIKE DIVERSIFYING. LIKE THE US AT THE TIME. Its not bad luck, its poor planning, and govt (your neighbor) has no obligation to reward you for it. Help should be limited and there should be a sting, you should fear being comforted over something you brought on yourself. That person has an agenda, and youre not gonna like it

Just thumbed through the comments here. Quite a few people seem to think that England somehow invented depravity. They don't realize that they're simultaneously demonstrating their prejudice and lack of history education. Human greed and hate know no national or cultural boundaries. There is a little of both in us all, and it is you that decides whether or not to nurture them. Many of you would do well to remember that.

this is why the kindness of people can be a great evil. the people of Ireland should have killed their landlord and taken there stuff. thy should have skin the f-cker alive and set the body back to the English. hopeful still alive and screaming. Our kindness to not lay down the wreath of good on people monsters like the old Irish land lords, greedy CEO, and the kaen at wall mater lets stuff like this happen.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10: 13)
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4: 4)
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalms 34: 18)

Potatoes are one of the only crops that will grow in the west of Ireland. They were popular because you could feed a family on only a small amount of land. They could even be grown on seaweed. They apparently were popular because it was common in those days for farmers to have their crops burned by soldiers etc. Potatoes were somewhat safe in lazy fields or so they thought.

My father was born and raised in County Leitrim. It's population to this day has not recovered from being decimated in the famine. My mother's county of Mayo did recover, but it suffered greatly during An Gorta Mor. My uncle, born around 1912, told me family stories of relatives of mine who barely survived the catastrophe. That's how extreme the effect was on the country.

People like me that leave in Ireland should know that the English took all our food because we would be fine if we just lost our potatoes but how could you stave. How could you be hungry if you have so much food! The English came took all our cows, seeds, fruit and other things that we need for food that how all Ireland people died well most died because of starvation.

I saw lots of memes about how Irish people somewhat cherishes the Queen's death on twitter and I didn't really get what kind of beef do Irish people had with England (although I do aware that the British Empire DID pissed like almost half the countries in the world due to colonialism and such, I guess I know why now (I'm from SEA)

Did the people of Ireland ever come together with weapons, to try and take or guard the many crops from being shipped to another place where folks had plenty, if not definitely more than Ireland did at the time? Genuinely curious to know if that was attempted, and if it was how did it play out? Cant believe this actually happened.

If anything, the landlords helped these people find a new home in the United States. This video is very unfair to landlords. They didn't make these people sick. They came up with the only viable option which was to help move these people to where they could survive versus staying in a famine starved country unable to grow food.

Genocide explains this entire episode, both sides of my families left Ireland at this time. And they carried their histories in story and song and passed it on to us. Coming to the new world and facing the Know Nothings was another challenge they had to overcome. What might be our next challenge to overcome?

Why didn't Irish fish more? Ireland is full of rivers and lakes and it's surrounded by the ocean. There's plenty of fish in Ireland. If they had got themselves a boat and few rods and would've fished for few hours a day, I bet the whole family would've been fed at the end of the day everyday.

I am ashamed to be British. There are far too many examples of what we have done, and continue to do, to only allow for one small apology from Tony Blair, who himself is responsible for atrocities carried out in our name. We are sad victims ourselves but only of our own evil propaganda.

Modern day San Francisco resembles Ireland at that time. Many work 2 jobs but cannot afford to pay rent anywhere. Some cities make it illegal to feed the poor. The Famine obviously should have taught people a lesson in not ignoring suffering but some people never learn

I think that those that do not know their history are doomed to repeat it and I think if we're not careful it'll happen in the United States as well. knowledge is power so get your butt out there and start learning something plant your victory garden now

Great video. Genocide is the only apt description. Over 30 regiments of the British army had stations in Ireland during this time to insure safe passage of the food exports. Aid from the USA was subject to British tariffs on arrival on the west Coast
