I fractured my ankle while hoisting a piece of plywood up a ladder onto the chimney chase on my off grid log cabin addition. It happened a month ago but I just realized now that I actually fractured the bottom of the tibia, my ankle. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. Hi Shawn.
My name is Bob and I am a former trauma orthopaedic nurse. A qualified nurse. Not unqualified.
Before you engage in any further strenuous activity, I urge you, very strongly, to seek a medical examination.
At very least your doctor, will, require you to have x-rays. And, may then, based on findings of the x-rays, refer you to a trauma orthopaedic surgeon.
Your injury is worse than you imagine and could cause your lower left leg to collapse beneath you.
Imagine, that that happened to you on a hike. You may be crawling home on your hands and knees. That is, if you get home at all!
In my work, we are required to understand injuries, bones, fractures (broken bones, blood vessels, nerves, joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, pain and trauma orthopaedic surgery and recovery.
Best case scenario, you will be laid up for a while.
Don't put yourself at any further risk.

well you should get it xrayed, you just never know with swelling. love the way its all shaping up. i figured it was getting cold up there. i think moose season is in, maybe not there though, over in Newfoundland it is. i think you was sleeping upstairs right. i got one of these Angel cotts, it holds up to 500 lbs, took my homemade bed out. the cat always finds a place on it, haa. im building a boot room right now, to save a little heat money. i put the fridge and a bench in there. i got a wall now at the end of my desk, the problem is the propane wall stove heats above my waist, but the floor is 10 degrees colder. and my bed is only 2 foot off the floor. i hate the cold anymore. that real cold stuff. Shawn you get that foot checked. be careful man.

Praying for a fast healing process. Shawn, I was wondering if you have thought about getting a puppy for Cali. Perhaps in her later stages of life it would do her some good and she could teach the pup some of her Cali traits. Something I wish I had done with my guy Seven. I love my new girl Banjo, but I wish she could've known him and learned some things from him. That way there would be memories of the both of them together. It's just a thought, I know Cali has some years left and I can see by your love for her Its going to be a tough loss. I'm still a wreck, and he will be a year gone in just a few days. I have enjoyed every single second of all your videos, and Cali makes it all the more special.

I have broken both ankles at different times, once from a skiing accident, and later from an industrial fall. Both were very painful with the skiing one needing wood screws to put me back together. Every time it gets cold and rainy I have pain in that ankle. I sure hope you got a damned good Doctor to put you back together and don't rush your recovery.
I know it is a difficult time to happen, but that's life, so take it as easy as you can. Really sorry for your pain and wish you a very speedy recovery.

I've worked through injuries before, and it often means you will have to deal with flare ups from now on. Not the worst thing in the world, but it can be frustrating. It's a choice we make when we have so much to do and don't want to give the foot or hip or knee the time to heal that a doctor would recommend. I can't complain. My foot and hip and knee are just fine most of the time. At least I got all that work done when it needed to be. We can live with these minor injuries just fine.

It seems like yesterday when you announced you were starting over and moving from the old cabin. I was so sad watching that video that day, Lol. Fast forward to today and it's wildly impressive what you've built here on this property. You're my hero man, truly inspiring what you've accomplished. Cant wait to watch the next video. I used look so forward to every Friday when you released weekly videos updating us with each week's progress. Today was another great installment.

Shawn go and get your ankle strapped up so it can continue to heal and the bones can seal back together properly. You need to take the pressure off the Ankle Bone. The trees with their colours reds and golden look so beautiful. The Master Room is coming along real good. The Fire Place looks Epic. What was in the mix you used to stick the stones to the Fireplace. and was it the same mix used to grout in between the stones Please and Thank You.

Yeah, Shawn, I really love that fireplace! Great job! I have to add that I have, also, injured my ankles, and legs, so many times, on a work site. There's several things that start happening, one is complacency. I jumped off, backwards, late in the day, from a bulldozer. End of the day, time to go home, broken ankle! Wow, I wish I was there to help you! So, you could get that bed built! I'm sure it will be a doozy! Take care!

How about a video on lessons learned from your prior masterpiece cabin compared to or applied to this cabin. What are some of the blessings What do you miss When are you going to do a new outdoor/pizza oven Is there anything on this cabin you will be changing after you get the master bedroom done, which btw looks awesome - also. Do you look at the changes caused by the sale of the old cabin to be a blessing in disguise.

I hope your ankle heals quickly. Your fireplace looks amazing! I've been watching for a long time and have seen all the different areas you've built out on your new property and home, but honesty I forgot about some of the beautiful details, like your pond. I'd love to see a cabin & property tour update video to really appreciate the details and linger on some of your work. Sometimes, they are shown so briefly. Best wishes!

Late partner fell off a roof installing the chase cover and spark arrestor on the fireplace he installed at work; first doctor said amputate. Next doctor said I'm sending you to the best sports doctor I know, the ankle was shattered, but the doctor used pins and plates to reassemble what he could. One year off work and he could walk again unaided, also went back to work, but no more roof work. You were lucky, take care.

Hello Shawn. Serge who formerly worked in South Korea. I have been following you since you began.
I have turned 70 this year. and I have learned one thing. Slow down. Schedules are for the young.
You do not want to suffer an injury which will follow you for the rest of your life. Like me.
I can speak for all your followers when I say. Be careful and take care. We love you and your show. THANK YOU!

You might not have a break, what you might have is a tear in the tendon and when that tendon is not connected, then the bone that it connects to juts out. I tore the same tendon when I was jogging one time and like you I didn’t go to the hospital. And now I permanently have a pointy ankle. Right on that spot when you bend your leg back. Because the tenant is no longer connected where it should be.

For the first half of the video I was expecting to see you break your ankle on camera. I was cringing at certain parts thinking, oh crap, this is where you slip off the roof or fall from the ladder. Then when you remove your wet shoes and talk about breaking your ankle several weeks ago, I could finally relax and enjoy a stress free second half of the video. Take care and speedy recovery!

So sorry about the ankle, please at least use a boot until it heals. I hope you saw the doctor to find out exactly what’s going on. Don’t let it heal incorrectly or you will have trouble as you get older. Just free advice you didn’t ask for from a 74 year old mom that knows about breaks and other things. The chimney is gorgeous, you truly are a craftsman, everything is beautiful.

Here in Germany no insurance would pay you a penny, if you injure your self while working on a roof just with ladder. What you need is scaffolding and some kind of safety climbing system, otherweise you just can hope to have luck! You are a tough guy, you're gonna make this, but plz consider some safety precautions. Take care and i hope you heal fast, you need proper medical care now.

I would put on a Comfrey poulice on the ankle and wrap with saran wrap so you can wear during the night in bed. Comfrey puts the minerals back into your bones and helps them repair. It is also known as Bone Knit and grows very fast in your garden it is also very good for your soil as it drops those minerals into it. You can find this data on YT.

You probably already have but if not, get an xray to see if the bone is healing properly. Moreover, rest and recover. It's annoying part of the leg/foot to break because it's usually unprotected outside of work boots and healing can be a female dog, if you know what I mean. You don't want to muck about with the base of your body and it's strength.

Shawn I hope you have seen a Dr. and had X-rays done. You may regret it later on by not seeing one. It happened to myself as I walked on a broken leg for 3 weeks and was a nasty break. I paid back then and paying now with arthritis. Anyway, I hope you get well real soon.
The bedroom is sensational as is your workmanship!

I've broken my ankle. Trust me you wouldn't be able to walk miles or jump down on to rocks. If you have blood lines running out from the injury it's a sign it's broken. I'm glad you were hurt as much as that, since resting your ankle in a cast or a boot would not be good for you.
