Shawn, as you were explaining the way that the animals avoid crossing open spaces, I suddenly remembered reading the very first pages of Bambi when I was a child. I walked to the edge of the forest clearing with Bambi's mother but we made no sound. We watched and waited before crossing the meadow. The meadow was dangerous. Your description brought all of that back in a moment.
