Honda Civic Type R meets VW Golf R - World's best hot hatchbacks reviewed and tested - Autocar
video description
I might have posted this before, the most middle class thing I will, or have posted. I parked next to an Aventador at Waitrose and it fit in, it looked at home. If you put a single seater next to it you would have the best track day line up that PalmerSport would jump on (perhaps.
I am biased but I tried a bunch of cars so it's not baseless. I found the Golf bland and if there were no Type R I would have gone with a little Fiesta ST over the Golf. I do 90/10 local/motorway if it helps.
I was also quite jealous of the VW infotainment box. The Honda one is functional if unresponsive. I don't like companies that push the driver towards Apple or Google as a sop to assauge responsibility for their one crappy offerings. The Honda GPS is Garmin, so fine (you can't manually update maps or add POI, the audio options work and the speakers are great, so it's not a huge distraction. It syncs with my phone, plays music nicely and does LBC. But for the sake of half a dozen tech staff I think they missed a trick.

Great review, probably the most accurate review i've seen on both cars. My only disagreement would come in the form of transmissions. I prefer the 6 speed on the Golf R. yes the DSG is quicker but you lose a hell of a lot of engagement on an already very refined car. The 6 speed fills that void a little better. No doubting the Civic Type R is better at as a pure drivers car. but gosh that rear is ugly. Honda should be commended for making such an amazing engine and chassis though. Don't need AWD when its as good as this. Im curious if they think it handles better than the classic megane RS? On another note, this guy reminds of the bloke from Coldplay.

There's only 1 hot hatch in this video and that's the civic. I mean you guys are saying ooo I would drive the golf 300 odd days of the year. Because its comfortable and boring basically. I think the gti range is a more fun and hot hatch type car. If you want a car that's not very exciting then the question to ask is well is it really a hot hatch then. Hot hatch is supposed to be fun exciting and engaging. Megan civic mini gp hot hatches even the golf gti fun. But when you talk about less excitement and talk about comfort in my opinion it's not a hot hatch it's just a hatch.

The Honda R is over the top AND is almost a second slower to 60mph, however it has a NUTTY top speed of nearly 170mph (275kph! The Golf on the other hand is probably the better car, faster to 60mph, more refined, however just plain BLAND. Final decision? I'd take the Honda, however only if it also hit 60 in 4. 9 seconds like the VW.

Give me the Type R over the VW. Actually, don't give me anything, I actually went out and bought a Type R and even parked in my garage it puts a smile on my face. It is incredibly quick, very practical with plenty of room for people and things plus I have that legendary Honda reliability and a 7 year warranty. I'm set.

Honda have simply failed haven-t they. It-s ugly and can only be driven like that b6 people who know what they are doing. The golf will do everything as well and with kids, a bike and an understated utter confidence. No contest. Red seatbelts! Didn-t the metro have those?

Or you could buy a used C6 Corvette, get about the same mpg and absolutely spank the pants off either of these cars and have something that actually looks good and goes really fast for the same price as a boring -hot- version of an econowagen.

I-ve owned two civic Si-s 99 & 2009 the. Type R would of been a great buy but the looks are wayyyy to loud and boy racer so I now own a 2020 GTI: ) I can-t drive a Type R everyday to work errands etc- it-s more of a fun day second car.

No way are all the vents and scoops functional on the CTR. Half of them are blanked off and the car is completely over designed for the sake of it. As a daily the Civic would drive you mad with that awful interior and useless infotainment system.

These pair of reviewers need some life put back into them, the boring lifeless golf suits them down to the ground, Honda type R looks like the supercar of hatchbacks, the best hatchback ever made, try 1, you will see what i mean, its EPIC!
