Installing a Wood Floor and a Log Truss for the Porch Roof, Off Grid Log Cabin Build Alone, Ep 24

This is such a rewarding stage of the log cabin build and homestead development! Now that the cabin is dried in, I'm working on interior elements, such as moving in an antique icebox, installing a pine wood floor, insulating the interior walls and ceiling and more. This week, in addition to the interior work, I scribe and fit the four lower posts on the porch that hold up the roof overhang and then install the three shorter posts that support the two purlins and the ridge log. The only things left to do on the exterior of the log portion of the cabin is to board the ceiling overhangs on all for sides (soffit, trim the windows and doors and seal the log joints before winter. Between working on the cabin, I'm busy bringing in the harvest, especially the potatoes, as the temperatures drop to a low of 2C this week. I am storing vegetables in the root cellar, the basement of the cabin, and before December, I have to finish insulating and boarding the walls and ceiling to protect the food from freezing. Not shown in this video, but will be in next week's video, is the cladding of the exterior of the breezeway with horizontal pine boards and sealant. Once that is finished, I am installing doors on the porch side and the breezeway entrance to the outdoor kitchen and I'll be completely weather tight before the end of September, well before our winter really gets started in early November. For more information on what I am doing this week on the homestead, tune in to my other channels where I explain what I'm doing.

Hi! I would caution you with making floor boards super tight against the walls. wood expands and contracts with humidity and if there is nowhere for the boards to expand to they will start lifting and buckling in the middle. I've seen it with hardwood flooring. it's best to leave a 1/4 - 3/8 of and inch perimeter of open space around the sides and put some floor moulding down over it to cover the gap. Love your vids man - I just wan't your dream cabin to be as awesome as it can be.

Mr. Shawn James, we welcome you, and we are waiting for you to follow up on this wonderful and distinctive work and the modernization and development that will take place on it. We would like to see a roofed car park for the cars you have, but there is a question that we do not see in your farm near the plastic house where you raise chickens to benefit from their eggs, and this is a suggestion nothing more. Welcome I feel happy while watching

suggestion. before you get the floor all covered with stuff. why not rent a large floor sander and give the planks a good sand. perhaps a nice clear coat to seal them after and poof you have a bright wood tone floor providing some extra bounce lighting. even if you dont keep the wood floor. sealed and then say tiled over or some such you know you would have a god surface to work from.

I don't know things are looking pretty modern there A side by side, ice box and now solar lights! GLAD to see you are making it work for you. It is looking GREAT! Glad it is at least closed in before winter. Will make this winter a lot more bearable for you and Cali. Also glad to see Cali now allowed a toy box Stay safe and no more injuries!

Was in construction for few years when I was younger, did a few full remodels with my wife recently but man, wish I had the opportunity to help you from the beginning on this one to lend a free hand, but to gain the knowledge in building this way. This is THEE dream.

Oh I would love to see you make your whole floor stone like you have under the wood stove. It would be so much easier to sweep and mop for your wife. Wood is nice but not easy on a woman back to clean. Unless you put in a hardwood floor like the modern homes have.

I've seen cabins on other sites that have three-inch gaps between logs. You couldn't fit a blade of grass between yours, Shawn. Wow. This is a work of art. Now we're at my favorite stage, the finishing work. Standing ovation for this masterpiece.

Hello Shawn,
More good progress. I guess as winter approached the goal is to get as much of the outside work done so you can focus in the inside when the snow is here.
Have a good weekend.
Take care.
Paul,

I really liked the The last of the Mohicans style soundtrack you played during this video. It was like an homage to the epic masterpiece.
This is one of the reasons why you have over 2 million subs now!

Why do you go to so much trouble putting double wall with insulation and then go ahead and installing those crappy windows rather than triple glazed thermal efficient ones?
reply

Some nice chisel and adze work on the ends of those truss supports.
I'll bet they were heavy too (I heard you say bugger as you manhandled the second one.

So is there a reason why you installed these posts without carving out the top before hand and then took them back down? I m sure there s a reason behind it.

Already you get a cozy comfortable feel for your home especially with the amber light bouncing off the log walls and wide plank floors. Very hygge.
