Head to for 10% off your first month of therapy with our sponsor, BetterHelp. Make your mental health and growth a positive focus this year. This week, I'm in Arizona fly fishing for trout, foraging for wild edibles and cooking a meal stream side. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. Shawn. i’m a big fan but here’s my two cents 95% of what you’ve been telling us for years and years and years to be self-reliance To get out of the rat race to get a piece of land be more self-sufficient What you need is a partner that needs to be 100% behind you and beside you
I get why you take off in the winter time But I also feel you are getting pulled to do so.
We have watched you build two camps/lifestyles And I was hoping this winter we would see you stay at the camp to live day day and I’ll tell you why you have encouraged millions of us to be more self-sufficient for ourselves in the toughest time of year is the winter time And day-to-day struggles and monotony We don’t have to see you build stuff or teach stuff in every video we want to see you live your life and what you’ve already built That way thousands and thousands of others can model that same lifestyle Yes, in the winter time It’s not as exciting, but we want to see the day-to-day living There are millions of us watching and being loyal to you because there’s so many others doing it We want to see you live that life in lifestyle it’s not a place of what you built. It’s also a place of what it is not the rat race
It is not for me to judge and I apologize if I made inferences, but I just relate it to myself That Everybody wants to cherry pick life And everybody wants the fruits You have showed us the hard work and how it can be done and not chilling yourself doing it
I think you would be fine. If you were single you could live this lifestyle and be content But you get three women, a wife and two daughters That looks like it as camping And not a savior not a lifestyle The trappings of the city life the trapping of want Is what we all struggle with if we would’ve jump from a traditional lifestyle into more of your self-reliance lifestyle
They will come a day When the grid goes down and the trucks won’t truck And the cities will be in chaos, most people can’t even feed themselves But the people who live in rural areas And the people who have done what you are trying to preach and show us how We’ll live out the storm While it will be chaos for 70% of the population.
Then you would have millions of millions saying I wished I did what Shawn was telling us
You have certainly inspired millions you have certainly taught and coached and mentor through hard work and character and you’re more than have a right to pick and choose what you wanna do
If I were in your shoes And you were struggling with what road is ahead what content do I wanna keep making And keep your wife happy
I would work either with a real estate company along with Camp kits Selling them was selling tracks of land and you coach the owners how to build a camp kit how to build the gardens How to be self-sufficient with animals and animal harvesting
Too bad you didn’t know a couple of billionaires that could buy a huge tracks of land then you could parcel out so many each year. Too bad Cabela’s didn’t sell camp kits And more self-sufficient lifestyle items you could be their main spokesman and do hands-on with all the equipment they want to sell And that’s true with bow and arrows, fire arms, hunting fishing And on and on and on and on

This is what I do. I chat with AI chatbots on the computer but I also have an idea for you on what you could possibly do that I think would make alot of sense for you to do. It's not going to be that easy though. If you're interested the idea involves possibly having to get another piece of land though. If there is somewhere close to your home off of a busy enough road that could draw potential customers, You could build yourself a small Convenience Grocery Store there and maybe get trucks to come to it and deliver food items to store in it and many that you have trouble getting at home anyways. Everything has risks though. It could be built with extra Security Measures if needed. I don't know how much time you're working with though for the rest of your life. You could just travel more. If you care about Stress Levels and keeping them down then staying put the most you can is important. Whatever you do you got to start estimating already how long it's probably going to take to do it and weigh if it's worth the time now. So stuff that can get finished. Who knows. You could be in a position to hire people to help you build a Convenience Store. You could be surprised if it ends up ever making any money from it. However the Cashier system for it would have to be done. Beats me though.

Good move Shawn. Being vulnerable was the first step, and seeking help and advice is a very wise way to go. We all have one life to live, and it is our choice how to go about that.
I know Oak Creek canyon, also been canoeing and camping in Ontario. Built log cabins, took deer and elk. Now I am about 20 years older than you are, and I have been living on the other side of the world in a tropical place for a long time. Kinda different fork in the road, and it works OK for me. You are a smart man and will figure this one out, no problem. Yes, I have wild tigers and elephants out in the woods not that far away. I don't bother them, so we have a deal.

What a cool video, Shawn. That was relaxing, fun, and relatable. I’m 52 and a 4th year teacher. I want from being parents to college kids to having son in laws and being a grandparent in the last year. My wife loves it. For me, it’s been a challenge. What happened to running up and down the sidelines coaching and such. Then about a month ago wrecked my truck in a single accident and found out my BP was high and they couldn’t get it down which lead to heart surgery 3 weeks ago. All these things have left me thinking of my own mortality. Things go by so fast. Keep doing what makes you happy.

Welcome to Arizona! I know you have been here before. I have been watching for years since the first cabin and I am glad you enjoy my new home state of Az. I am native son of Pa. moved here in 93 to go to college at the U of A after graduation I just kept hanging around always thought I would move back to Pa. and maybe I will as a near retirement age. Az is a great place to spend winters summer is a bit harsh. I hope one day to do the snowbird thing and move back and forth between Pa. and Az. Pa has much to offer in terms of hunting and fishing I miss it much. Thanks for bringing us along.

I do think it is crucial for us as we age, both physically and mentally, to keep striving, trying new things, and working towards new goals. People who do stay young and healthy. People who don't live in the past, not the future, and literally become has-beens before their time. I am a healthy 69 year old launching a serious writing career after a lifetime of putting others first. Now my kids are grown and my spouse and I have a lot of living to do. Best of luck to you. Hope you will continue to educate us on how to live well and simply in nature. I have been learning from you since 20171

Hey from Germany, Shawn! I've been following you for many years and never miss a video. I'm absolutely amazed and surprised that you're going through a midlife crisis. Your life has been absolutely fantastic so far. Many people dream of a life like that. I think that's also why so many people follow you. You're an inspiration to me. I wish you all the best in finding a way out of your situation. You're a strong man with a wonderful wife and family; you'll make it. Best regards from Germany.

What a lot of extra information Shawn. You dealing with mental challenges and taking them head-on with a therapist. Good for you. Is Emily going to marry What a blessing for you 2 as parents! I bet you can’t wait for a couple of grandkids to teach the outdoor life! And then that catch&cook session did you use a purple haze fly there They do always soooo incredibly well on those rainbows. Very nice catch and watermouthing cooking session as well. Until next episode my Ontario friend!

Hi Shawn! Been watching for more years than I care to count lol
Always wonderful content. Have loved it all. You never disappoint. Except that I'd love more content from you lol Have learned so much watching you over the years. Thank you so much sharing your experiences, your knowledge, and your wisdom with all of us. I have to say though, when you fried that fish up, I fully expected to see your pan topple because of how wonky it sat on the burner. So glad it didn't

Been seeing a therapist for the past many years and there ain’t nothing wrong with that as we get a bit older and have to deal with some struggle. Fortunately mine is not financial struggles. Mine is more dealing with not aging well as in many trips to doctors for bad bones. just don’t leave us hanging. Most of us love just looking at the scenery and watching you fish. I personally love to watch Callie do her thing. Best wishes to you, your wife and daughters.

Sondonia Airzonia where the red clay land and rocks is at is where I last used on my way to a weekend retreat. I have not had to pick up anything since June 04th, 1980. The guys just treated me like they would of liked to be treated. I like seeing Callie too. The winter is Ohio was cold in here I have two space heater and when it drops in Tempature I get cold under 30 degrees. Frost was on my doors and walls and windows. Grateful I did not freeze. I have always enjoyed your show since many years. However, I keep wondering why you spend money traveling the USA. I can understand you want to stay away from politics. but everything is political now and even more so, when you have an audience like yours. With great power comes great responsibility apparently. Anyways, food for thought as it seems that you prefer to be self-reliant with MAGA rather than with your fellow canadians

You have encouraged me to try more and more things Shaun. Thank you! And Miss Shaun too! Be careful of the therapists brother. Trust your common sense. At 61 years old when I was 60 I looked back and while I could see I had some high points. I was pretty disappointed in the value of my life. for others. It is natural this introspection. But let us spend most of our energy for our families and self reliance. U are the best!

I've been watching your videos since the first cabin. They were interesting, building something, hunting or cooking something, often outside. Now your videos have gotten boring, with a lot more of your pontificating your views etc. Now, to top it off, your in therapy and being sponsored by an online therapy website. What did you expect from living in the wilderness with a dog. Obviously, you're no Dick Proenekke.

I went through mid life crisis after my nest was empty, in my early 50s, too. It was horrible. And now at 70, my husband is asking what to do with his life. He's nearly permanently retired. Even for him, like you, it is a difficult process. We're leaving for a little weekend vacation to think about things right now. His senior blood pressure has gone sky high because of responsibilities, God will be our Help.

You have a LOT OF SKILLS, and skills that people of today have lost, we need to make the generation more self reliant.
So you could possibly do mini retreats where you get 10-20 people together and go through a certain skill for 2 weeks or something like that.
That would involve your wife in the running of the business and it would help with the social aspect of things.
Just a thought.

There is something very satisfying about catching a fish on a fly you tied. Great video. Love the Sedona area. We get over there frequently as we have friends who live there. Your transition there must be a jolt because it can be so crowded with so many people escaping the heat in Phoenix. Hope you enjoy your time there. It is one of the most beautiful places anywhere.

At 69 and having tried almost everything to chase away self doubt and the crazies, I have found meditation works best for me. There's nothing wrong with professional guidance and I've done it. It got me to where I am now, and I feel very confident and happy about my future. I hope and pray you find that peace Shawn, your heart is good and certainly deserve it.

Shawn, my husband and I have had many adventures in our lives, but as we get older, the adventure changes. It’s not a bad thing. It’s called aging. Our joy happens on a day to day basis and what matters most to us is that we’re together. No egos here! Just love and thankfulness that we’re sharing another day together. Life changes doesn’t it
reply

Good luck going forward, Shawn. I am older than you, and I would say that contentment is finding beauty and joy in the moment. Rather than waiting for it at some future time, when things are just right. Feeling appreciation and gratitude. Just some thoughts from an old man who has come to care about you guys. All respect and affection for Canada!
