Fallout's lore has one massive problem: the music hasn't changed in centuries. So Brian David Gilbert unraveled a totally new genre of music that should be heard in the wasteland. (SLIGHT SPOILER: If you'd like to hear more from the musician who helped create the end song, check out their stuff here

I feel like Fallout's genre should encapsulate the bleakness of the world they live in with all the melancholy and hardiness, with maybe a tinge of hope and romance to keep the vibe similar.
If the apocalypse occurred the music wouldn't be bright and happy to cheer people up, it would be dark and desolate to fit the vibes of listeners. Going against that would polarise people. Listening to bossa nova while you slay a mutated beast gives a little bit of mixed emotions.
Sure, you could make the argument that those living in bunkers don't experience the full horrors of everything above, but staying in an unnatural, metallic hellscape isn't exactly lovely either. Music isn't exclusively to change your mood and make you feel better, it's to make you feel more comfortable with the emotions that you're -already- having, to sort of ease you into it or maybe make you feel better by knowing that there are others going through the same stuff.
Correct me if i'm wrong though, i've never played fallout after all.

There's the Maslow pyramid of needs, and most people aint over the first few steps. There might be a few people in the Self-Actualization step, but it would needs a way to share it.
Means to share music are scarce in Fallout ( vinyls, for example ) and it was not as easy to produce new music, or even new genres for that.
So yeah, musician will be scarce, and will hardly be able to share their music, making new music rare in post-apocalypse.

Fallout isn't so cooky in the first 2 games, and the 50s music bs wasn't there either. New Vegas took steps to fix it, but it was still trapped in the Bethesda style. 4 also did, but didn't try very hard. I'm glad you called this out tho, I like the music but it's always bothered me

To be fair, the guns that turn people into goo were very much invented -before- the Great War. Like, I agree that musical innovation should have happened, but the example is flawed because the plasma tech wasn't invented by post-War people.

this video terrible, new vegas has probably the best cursted soundtrack I've ever heard. few people woild be making music and it would be a pain to heavily produce and distribute in the mojave. youve entirely missed the beat.

This is why the ost for Fallout 1 and 2 where so great. They carried with them the actual weight of the post apocalypse. Bethesda just looked at the intro's and was like -This is what the ENTIRE wasteland must listen to. -
reply

It could also be that they want to listen the music that was around at the time of the destruction to remind themselves of a world gone by and that chaos in the sense that they are in can still be temporary.

to think, Safety Fan and Bureaucratic Wunderkind Brian David Gilbert was once making analytical videos regarding the musical stylings of the fallout series, and now hes voiced two characters in Fallout 76

9: 07 It-s a shame he forgot that 90% of the time youre just walking through the wasteland. You are out of your mind if you think im walking from Goodsprings to Novac without my spurs going Jingle Jangle Jingle

Nuclear generators and terminals. In fallout five they could make a simple DAW for your terminal that you could export your tracks on a holotape, then have a quest to get one of your songs on the radio

-Art makes life worth living- is a really sad statement when you think about it. Do you not have friends or somebody to love? Your greatest joy in life comes from the consumption of media? Really?
reply

Personally I like fallouts music especially NV. I just feel like it-s needs a larger selection. Listening to the same 10 songs over a 50 hour play through is exhausting

There are a few more artists on Fallout universe!
The Tops artists we find on New Vegas also plays new music. Also there's Dead Money -Begin Again- song.
: )

reply

there comes a point while watching this video that you realize that ska is coming. The horror of that realization is something unreplicated by any other form of art.
reply

i do agree that there should be new music but how dare you forsake big iron (im from Texas revolvers are basically a currency in texas at this point)
reply

A time span of almost 200 years between games is kinda crazy. The Sole Survivor would see the FO76 player as old as we see George Washington
reply

3: 03 don't the performers at the Tops play fallout related covers of country songs? I know it isn't really unique but it's still a different song
reply

Kinda want an edit of Fury Road with a ska soundtrack now. Couldn't understand most of the dialogue anyway, the trumpets won't be a problem.
reply

You may have forgotten one very important purpose of any form of art, which is -expressing yourself- which is where sad music comes from
reply

The only new music I've heard in universe is the songs sung by the Lonesome Drifter. And they're great!
But there's like. 3.

reply

I just realized after rewatching how many hints and puns there are throughout this video. Going -one step beyond? - BDG, please LMAO
reply

fallout 3, 4 and 76 are a theme park attraction of the original two games and new vegas. bethesda just doesn't understand fallout.
reply

The lonesome drifter writes his own music, thanks Josh Sawyer for the originals you wrote for the Ace- Theaters main attraction
reply

-those time signatures only belong with math rock, that is to say, in the garbage- the most timeless thing I've ever heard
reply

This implies that there is something wrong with the music? Shill take, loser city take, real caeser's legion slave take
reply

14: 30 dang that -if you don't feel the brotherhood of steel join the brotherhood of brass- line is just the best
reply

Music sucks ass bud literally doesnt fit any of the games, Shitty bethesda or based obsidian or interplay or nothing
reply

This raises a good point, and always bothered me. Generally though, I just accepted it as part of Fallout-s identity.
reply

They have other songs being made but they dont publish them via radio like the lonesome drifters songs
reply

People: we wouldn't be the same if alot of people died
Looks at History
Me: um yeah actually we would
