I have an old recipe for a steamed graham pudding that was served at Christmas by my great-great-grandparents in the late 1800s. I had really wanted it to be a Christmas tradition to continue on, but it has four cups of graham flour and is sweetened with a half cup of molasses and some raisins. There's a bit of cloves in the recipe, and I had thought they had left out a lot more spices that you would usually find in fruit cake or British Christmas puddings. But it's likely supposed to be really bland and awful.

The most ironic (and angering) thing with Graham is that, when his health declined, he went to the doctor, who prescibed him meat and liquor, which he duly took.
He didn't stick with the bland lifestyle he so much preached.
He only regretted not sticking with it in his deathbed, but mostly to save some face for his movement.
But it was already late: vegetarians distanced themselves from Grahamism.

In honor of Sylvester Graham, I'm going to get some sweet modern Graham crackers, fluffy marshmallows, and my favorite super indulgent dark chocolate bars (I'm thinking Ghirardelli 70% dark. I'm gonna light up a marshmallow and make a s'more that is so indulgent that it will fuel baser desires that I didn't know existed. And I will encourage others to make these treats with their favorite chocolate bars as well.

a lot of women in the temperance movement had joined to protest alcohol, because alot of families went broke when the husband had a drinking problem and would gamble away everything and abuse them. this fuelled domestic violence which is why feminism and temperance had intensely interwined

What a great animation in the latest video!
In our country, graham crackers are often used as an ingredient for making icebox cakes and bars. That dish is popular during fiestas, Christmas and New Years Eve. I'm glad graham crackers can be enjoyed to eat compare in the past.

It is really confusing at best.
The first people to land on American soil were these same puritans who made the lives of humans difficult.
Yet the American nation was founded upon secularism, antithetical to puritanism which viewed Christianity to be the only true religion.

I don't think s'mores are attributed specifically to the Girl Scouts because they were also popularized in the Boy Scouts. However, there was a recipe for them in a Girl Scout publication in 1927, so that may be the reference here.

Now that we are living in a world where consumption of processed foods is rampant and younger people are diagnosed with colon cancer and other digestive problems, Graham's recommended diet would be beneficial and worth-trying.

This Sylvester Graham is just about the worst American who ever lived up to his own time. Everything he has said is not just opposed to freedom, but actively seeks to tear freedom down and brand it as bad.

Before anyone gives graham credit for smores, tastless food would have been invented by someone else whod enjoy it, like say autistic people. Obviously not all of us(im autistic. But you get the joke and point.

Are you telling me that one tyrannical, judgmental man who clearly had issues was the reason Christianity was interpreted to somehow be made unbelievably restrictive and judgmental no way this man went to heaven

Alright, you did a video on the history of chocolate, and now here is a video on Graham crackers. Now you just need to do a video on the history of marshmallows and you’ll have a s’more combo.

I know his theories were bs, but in the current world, I think the idea of being more conscious of where, when, and how we consume our pleasure should definitely be thought about more carefully

The narrator says bodies like baddies which makes me nostalgic for when I lived in Wisconsin and I'd hear people from Minnesota or Northwoods say things like 'stop-and-go' lights. Stay weird.

To be fair, they were a little close to the libido control. Eating enough crackers and cereal packed with carbs can lead to type 2 diabetes, and that can negatively impact your libido.

Y’all need to listen to The Dollop podcast where they go into hilariously crazy detail about this exact topic. It’s episode 46, live with Patton Oswalt! Highly recommend it: )

Meanwhile, in Victorian England, they took exactly the same idea and turned out digestive biscuits, which were meant to keep you from farting in public.
Priorities, eh

See I think people like him preach for a boring life as a virtue so people willingly let the rich rob them blind. I wonder if Graham had any business interests.

I like your animation but why'd you have to drag poor Johann S. Bach (via use of his music) in with these two guys. Bach had 13 children, 6 of whom survived.
