Howdy! Welcome to this new video, where I will show what it's like to spend two days on the new -rmountaineertrain. Traveling on a luxurious train was a premiere for me, so I was thrilled to travel with them. It's a true luxurious odyssey! - TRIP INFORMATION - Date: September 2023 Railway company: Rocky Mountaineer Train type: GP40 and SilverLeaf cars From: Denver, CO to Moab, UT Price: Around $1500 per person - prices may vary on the season, feel free to check RM's website for more
Date: 2024-01-09

Did they make you exit the vestibules in tunnels?
Did your Mom have fun?
I also think that car behind the engines is a diesel-generator -power car-. Some American freight locomotives never had a separate generator for passenger train operation. The -power car- created all of the electrical power to the train for light, heat and air conditioning. It will also generate smoke and that diesel smell.

As a boy in the 1940's, I made this trip on the old D & SL coal-fired Moffat road train from Denver as far as Craig many, many times. It seems strange but happy to see it celebrated now as a tourist attraction. In those days we could board at rural places by flagging the train down and hopping on, then stopping at our ranch in Grand County.

I really fail to understand how it's possible to justify such a price. Food looks good, but it's nowhere near being luxury, nor is the seating, and you're not even sleeping in the train. I really wonder about the margins on this route. Being a Canadian company, I have no doubt it is way overpriced.

Denver Regional Transit District owns Union Station and does not allow the Rocky Mountaineer access to it. Hence the shuttle to the actual location.
9: 50, the genset tool car at the end of the train.
For $1500 there should be the Auto Train type option to bring motor vehicles from Denver to Moab.

Watching this brought back a rush of amazing memories. My dad recently passed away and I took my mom on this exact trip back in early October. We had an incredible time and I'm glad you had a wonderful time with your mom too. Thank you for the great documenting!

14: 26 this is actually the Rocky Mountaineer's second route in the United States. They had another route called the Coastal Passage that started in Seattle, Washington and went into Canada to Vancouver, BC. That route was discontinued the year before 2020.

Thibault, so sweet of you to bring your mom along. For the second day you have to be back at the train by 6: 45 AM? I think I will pass. Looking at the menus, the granola is served with a croissant? Interesting. Thank you Thibault for the beautiful video.

Thanks for that. It looks like a great train, but frankly it's more than I'm willing to spend. I still need to ride the Cal Zephyr, which would be more reasonable. But the country needs a luxury train option, and this one will do just fine.
reply

That's the closest I'll ever get to riding that train, so thank you for sharing. To me, the most obvious advantage of an excursion like this (aside from the luxury) is that you don't miss scenery because of overnight travel.
reply

I congratulate you for bringing your mother aboard. I'm certain that this will be a lasting memory.
But, you dont need to travel solo. In certain you would have fans who would join you.
I would.

I worked in Glenwood Springs for many years, and loved to watch the trains come through from my office window. The Hot Springs are marvelous, I'm glad you were able to stay over at the wonderful hotel
reply

I have done the ski train to Winter Park. Fun! Did you have time for the Hot Springs in Glenwood Springs? It's a stair step set of pools - hottest at the top, coolest at the bottom.

Hello Simply Railway, I am very much into watching this kind of videos and uploads as I love travelling by train, thank you so much for sharing so much info. ----

Wow, it's expensive, true, but what an amazing time!
There's a new Virtual Railfan live camera at Big 10 Curve in Arvada, CO. You should have waved at us! :)

Excellent video trip! Fantastic to watch this because I will be enjoying the SilverLeaf Plus experience in September 2024 although west to east. Can't wait.

Great video. I was surprised at how smoky it was. It can take away from the scenic aspect of the journey. Not to mention the pollution when you are outside.
reply

Thibault, this was awesome! Thank you for sharing this experience. I hope your Maman loved it as much as we do! Merci mon ami, see ya on the rails!
reply

What an amazing experience! I have travelled completely around the States on Amtrak, but this train is exquisite! Thank you for the journey.

Brilliant video (as always. Would you mind sharing information (make/model) about the camera you use for the 'out of the window' shots? Many thanks.

Glad your mom got to experience this with you. The constant announcement would drive me crazy though.
reply

Its super scenic, but honestly the california zephyr is far more scenic, especially through colorado.
reply

Why does the train have to stop for other train to go by? It looked like plenty of room to pass.
reply

Your mother is so young and attractive. You're a good son for bringing her on this great journey.
reply

Very beautiful video, the scenery so nice, I forgot to drink my tea during watching.
reply

I still find it odd that Canada's Rocky Mountaineer is operating in the United States.
