Get 20% off Car Vertical using code Carwow: Does China make a better Range Rover than Range Rover Mat’s got his hands on a Jaecoo 7 and a Range Rover Evoque, and he’s about to go head-to-head with them both to see which is best! He’ll be comparing the design, interior, performance, and a whole host of other categories to see whether this Chinese SUV is really a better pick than the World-renowned Range Rover! So let’s get into it Starting with the design, the Evoque we have here was launched in 2018. It’s had a midlife facelift since then, but that's brought only a few tweaks and changes. Up front, it has a smallish grille, but the overall design still looks smart. Along the side, it comes with black pillars to give the roof a slight floating effect, and this car was one of the first to introduce pop-out door handles. Around the back, there’s a roof spoiler, as well as large Range Rover badging. As for the Jaecoo, the front end is notably different from the Evoque, with a huge grille flanked either side by headlights with a kind of upside-down effect. Along the side, the similarities to the Evoque are extremely noticeable! It also comes with pop-out door handles, and for cars in White, it also has black pillars. Around the back, there’s also a large Jaecoo badge - just like the Evoque! On the inside, the similarities are once again noticeable. The Range Rover comes with a clean centre console dominated by a large gear lever, and there are minimal physical buttons, with most functionality controlled through the infotainment screen. The seats are made from leather and are comfortable, while the majority of the cabin is covered in soft-touch materials. The Jaecoo has a similar & clean centre console, although the drive selector is now a stalk on the steering wheel. There’s also a large infotainment screen dominating the dash, and soft-touch materials higher up in the cabin. Reach a bit lower, however, and scratchy plastics are easy to find! The seats are made from faux leather, but they feel just as nice as those in the Range Rover. As for the price, the Jaecoo starts from just 30, 115, while the Range Rover starts from 44, 380. The cars we have here, however, have several options added. So while the Jaecoo costs around 35, 000, the Range Rover comes in at over 52, 000! So is the Evoque really worth almost 20, 000 more than the Jaecoo Or is his all-new Chinese entrant the one to choose You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself! Check out Carwow Leasey:

My partner has the same year and model of evoque. She drives long journeys for work so the hybrid element of the car is pretty useless, her car averages 38mpg according to the screen. She only got the hybrid to get the tax break, something i dont agree with at all, there should be no government incentives to buy particular cars, i resent my tax money getting other people money off electric cars or income tax reductions for hybrids. Anyway she picked the car in spite of me saying they dont have the best reliability. True to form it has broken down, just once when it was about 6 months old but thats still one more time than id want from a new car. Shes had it nearly 2 years now, currently the reverse camera doesnt work, the tail lights have condensation and at one point one of them stayed on for hours, it sometimes refuses to select drive from reverse or vice versa which can be dangerous when you expect to go backwards and go forwards, the washer fluid bottle leaks so im forever refilling it and the software constantly says it needs updated but won't update. It also has the loudest windscreen wiper motor ive ever heard which may be a fault on just her car as i didnt notice it on your test car. On the positive side though you can pull the arm rests forward to close the cup holders. The jaecoo is too much of an unknown so i wouldnt be jumping into one of them either if it was my choice but i wouldnt recomend a rr evoque either. In summary that was a comparision between a car thats known to be a bit crap with a cheaper car that probably will prove to be worse.

Unless I missed it, don't think Mat tested offroad capability. Before you all start shouting, I know most of these SUVs never go offroad, but in the case of the Range Rover, you are paying that bit extra for the capability (the differentials, the transfer boxes, the haldex, the programming, etc. I'm not saying an Evoque is as good as a Defender or even in the same league, but a fair bit of the extra price for the Evoque goes to all that Land Rover offroad capability that the Chinese car doesn't have. You are paying for it, even if you don't use it. And it's there, installed and ready, even if you don't use it. Think of it like the ability of a Bugatti Chiron to go 300mph. If you are buying a Chiron you are paying for that, even if you never actually ever get to that speed. Like I said, maybe I missed Mat mentioning this, but it's a factor. My opinion: If you want something that looks like an SUV but it can't go offroad, get this Chinese car or a thousand others like it. If you want an SUV, even if you don't get it dirty all that often, get the Evoque. I think it's that simple. Personally, I believe if you are looking to buy an SUV, it might as well be an SUV and not just something that looks like an SUV. Otherwise you are fooling yourself. Just my humble two cents.

I used to owned Jaecoo J7 PHEV (my second Chinese car after GWM Haval H6 HEV) for almost a year with the mileage slightly over 10, 000km. At first it's all good but after driving for few months, problems starting to shown. I bought it for RM162, 800 earlier this year and sold it for RM100k.
My main problem is the Infotainment Touchscreen, the first time is that the screen has lines, 2nd time black screen and unable to start the car, 3rd time is when driving suddenly black screen and everything just cut off, the car just stop in the middle of the highway.
I ever owned Range Rover Evoque and I can say Jaecoo incomparable with Range Rover, in terms of the build quality and reliability. Can't complain much as the price is 2. 5x cheaper in Malaysia.
I'm getting my 3rd Chinese car soon, Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV (1. 5T, the price is similar around RM160k. My friend owns the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro 2. 0T, he's been driving it for almost 2 years, so far so good. The reason I'm getting the PHEV version is because it's the same with Jaecoo J7 PHEV, if the 2. 0T version has a bit turbolag and feel jerky in low speed.

The Jaecoo looks kind of ugly at the front and has some visible panel gaps. The paint job also leaves things to be desired. However, while it appears to be a decent SUV for the money, the most interesting aspect will be how these Chinese cars perform in terms of quality and repairs over time. By no means am I trying to say that Land Rover is a poster child for good quality, durable cars, but they have the premium brand cachet, and most people seem to be somewhat forgiving (or maybe used to it by now) that LRs have quality issues. Chinese cars, on the other hand, still very much have a cheapo brand image and need to provide value and quality for the money. If they fail on one of these aspects, there is little incentive to buy them.

12: 26 that would be USB A. Limited in power to a paltry 15w. Conversely, USB C can handle up to 100w depending on manufacture choice.
Anyway, I don't like cars with names printed across the hood (you too Jeep) or billboard signed across the entire rear panel. It reminds me of a commercial vehicle. Sorry, Range Rover. You have a logo, that's all you need. To the benefit of the RR the AWD is a major benefit and consideration over the Jaecoo.
As for the Jaecoo the font grill is hideous as is the font. It needs a logo which people can see directly or in the rear view mirror and recognize instantly. Not a name printed in an obscure font you have to take time to figure out and read.

I've had both a Range Rover Velar and now a Jaecoo. I have to say I prefer my Jaecoo. My Velar was a beauty but all the tech and things the Jaecoo could do is next level for the price! Also what wasn't fully explained is the miles you get on electric is brilliant in the Jaecoo. My Jaecoo is brand new. The interior and space is better than my Velar in my view. Will be interesting to see how my Jaecoo does in a couple of years! Also you get a 7 year warranty as standard on the Jaecoo that literally covers everything!

I test drove the Jaecoo and got back to the Garage and walked away it was Terrible half the stuff on it wouldnt work like the radio, and the EV function, it wheelspun away from every junction and steering was Vague and the brakes were really grabby it was like an on /off switch, the engine was rough and wind /road noise was appaling this on a car with only 500miles on it for 35k no thanks not when you can get a Kia Hyundai VW and a lot of other European cars for the same price.

More important than how a door shut sounds, is how the turn signal sound is. Because this is something one hears dozens of times each day, while the door shut sound is experienced much less. And there is planty of variety in turn signal sounds; interestingly, some expensive cars sound cheap in this. So, please consider presenting this sounds in your car tests. Itd be appreciated.

Are carwow being sponsored by Jaepoo They seem to be really pushing their cars at the minute. Lots of owners are seeing issues with their cars when you look on the forums so I think long term reliability is going to be a big issue. Personally, I'd rather buy something from a proven brand that's a couple of years old for the same price (not a range rover though)

The Jacoo is 20 THOUSAND pounds cheaper
So it’s obviously not gonna have as plush carpets as a car 20 grand more expensive
Anyone could mark it down on quality
But one thing am sure of
It won’t be any less reliable than the Range Rover, not many cars are less reliable than a Range Rover

reply

this review is sooo pointless. completely different classes, prices and status. if there is something where are these cars possibly similar is the longterm reliability, but ofc you cant compare that with the chinese crap. I can built you a amazing looking car but will it drive more than a day

I fell for your advertisement. By purchasing a loan from Carvertical. They sent an absolutely wrong message, on a different car, a different model, manufactured in 1997, and in 2020. The pardon has been received, the money can be turned over. Scam! Don't buy money from these shahrais.

Just remove all badges from the Jaecoo as no stranger from a distance is going to know what SUV brand your driving when they drive by either of them at 70 mph and they're broke down on the side of the road. Interesting comparison given stigma of poor quality and reliability from both.

Just proof that noone from Carwow ever reads the comments on their videos. It's been mentioned numerous times (by me as well as others) that the standard USB port is called Type-A, just like the newer is called Type-C, yet Mat still says dont know what it's called after so many years.

Orange peel is a manufacturer decision. Usually on less expensive car they leave it as it’s more easier to maintain than a mirror finish. On expensive car they expect you to keep up with ppf or ceramic or graphene coat or sealers. You can also fix orange peel with polish and coating.

I wish car manufacturers would stop including regularly used functions, like temperature and AC, on touchscreens. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. And frankly, it introduces a safety risk when you have to take your eyes off the road.

Better comparison would be south Korean hyundai or kia who were where jaecoo et all the other Chinese brands were 10 years ago. For similar money i am taking a hyundai tucson n line s hybrid over the jaecoo every day of the week

China the great country for reverse engineering, also the price difference, Chinese cars more than likely employed by cheap young labour in bad working conditions, so if you buy this knock off brand you are supporting this.

That's not how you close a door despite slamming being a common practice. Hold the handle and push it closed with medium force. That should tell you the quality. Best door latch I ever encountered was in the 80s on a V8 Rover P6.

Europe is shooting itself in the foot, the policies it follows are simply unacceptable, Europe follows the big players instead of presenting itself as a player, I am disappointed, China has destroyed them all, it is unstoppable
