Hey everyone, keep in mind that the differential shown in this video is your typical rear diff on most american trucks, but there are also more complicated dual chamber differentials like the one found in Jeep Cherokee, those diffs are crazy difficult to service and its super easy to destroy your drivetrain by unscrewing the wrong plug (fluid for the servo motor instead of oil. Those diffs were made to be only serviced by the shop and require crazy amount of work so please, be careful.
I deatroyed my whole rear diff by letting a few ml of servo fluid drip out, then i let some air inside and everything went to shit, be careful.

Any younger people just getting into vehicles wondering why you remove fill plug before draining fluid
If you can’t get the plug out after draining fluid you won’t be able to add it at the end unless your up north these things will come out pretty easily they do make a actual tool for this that bits better then a 3/8 ratchet but it’s not required just make sure the ratchet drive or extension is fully seated into square before turning

You'd be surprised how many people ignore this part of vehicle maintenance. Especially in the desert where I live. The OE considers our region Severe Duty maintenance spec. Basically that means it doesn't matter if you tow or not, service recommendations are 30, 000mi for the rear diff. That's all because of the extreme heat and the mountainous terrain. Same thing with transmission services. Basically it's almost halved.

I HIGHLY suggest using a Lubelocker brand gasket if one is available for your vehicle. They install dry and are re-useable. No sealant needed! They are DEFINITELY nice if you do you own maintenance and will be changing your gear oil regularly.
The one for my Chevy truck was about 30 bucks. Well worth it in my opinion. They make gaskets for certain Transmissions as well.

Give a quick thanks if you happen to have a rear diff with a removable cover like that, some have the ring/pinion as one part with the front of the diff and a solid cast rear. Ford 9in guys will know what I'm talking about
My old Falcon is going to keep leaking for a while bc the fluid is cheap and I don't wanna pull the axles.

I use a VERY fine wire wheel on a drill. I apply a thin layer of grease to paper gaskets. And like u said open the fill plug before draining oil, because if u drain it and can't get the fill plug loose You're screwed. Especially with transmission and transfer cases. Been there done that! I will look into the goo you used

Lubelocker makes speciality gaskets which don't need sealant and they're available for most common truck differentials which makes the job substantially easier.
If your diff fill bolt is seized like my 30 year old ranger you can get an aftermarket off-road one which has both a fill and drain plug on the cover.

Great timing for this video, took my truck in for an oil change and refrigerant recharge and shop wanted to charge $200 for front and rear diff fluid. I was like naw I dropped $500 for the oil change and Freon I’m sure I can do this myself. And boom next morning this shows up on my subscription uploads

Roll with an aftermarket diff cover. They’ll come with a drain bolt, 2 fill bolts, sight glass, dip stick, and can hold a larger capacity of fluid. Also have cooling veins for better air flow. Worth the money if you stick to 50, 000 intervals, same with the front diff.

I think you should emphasize how important it is to take off the fill plug FIRST. Because if for any reason, IF it's seized or broken and CAN'T be removed, you didn't just empty all the oil out of it before you can assuredly refill it up again.

A way to combat this legislation is that Anything a politician says outside parliament should have the law placed on them for causing fear. There are 27 million Australians that can raise legal action against the politicians.

Why did you not show the part were u used the induction heater Sosial media is just pure dogshit at this point. All off those bolts would snap in the rust belt. I have an induction heater and I CAN NOT wrench without it.

before cracking open the diiff cover i suggest wire wheeling it to get it 90% cleaned and ready for paint after its removed. using the bolts holding it to act as a set of hands to clean it up and save a step or two.

Look, I love a nice reinforced cut gasket. But if you're gonna put all that effort in just use Permatex the right stuff in one layer.
most modern trucks have nothing but silicone on them anyway.

As someone who had to completely swap the axle on one of these trucks, its a goid idea to change the fluid as instructed, because all of the fluid in mine just shot out of an open vent and blew a bearing

My 2 cents / Tip. If it's a Sealant only type cover, i. e. No Paper Cut Gasket, try to set yourself up to let the sealant dry as long as possible before putting the New Gear Oil in.
