Chevy Traverse - Check Engine Light Will NOT Turn On!

i had a couple cars in for state inspection that had non working mils with codes. in Texas, no mil at key on engine off is a fail if it has codes or not. the customers gave us the ok to check out all the problems.
both had lean codes, one also had coolant temp low to long and too many not ready monitors.
both had the mil wires cut near the pcm. who ever cut the wires also used heat shrink, but they put the wire ends into the heat shrink to make it look like a repair was done.
normal pull & wiggle didn't work, they used marine heat shrink.
with the mil wires fixed, i worked the codes. both were really minor problems. both had dirty mafs, one was missing the seal on the oil cap, the other the fresh air hose from the air box was cracked and it had a bad T-stat.
cleared codes and adaptives, a drive cycle and they were good.
the cars belonged to a husband & wife and had been to the same place to get the mils fixed.
the wife was really happy because her heater was working again.
from references from those 2 people, we got some other customers from the other place.
its been almost 15 years since i left the field, sometimes i do miss it, but its stuff like that i don't miss.

about 30 years ago I de-pinned a transmission connector wire that fed the TCC lockup solenoid, something happened inside trans where it would lock and get stuck.
it would not release, even after shutting car off and playing around, it would just instantly stall the engine, I eventually revved it up and yanked it in gear and with a big bang it released.
once the wire was removed it had no issues and oddly never set a check engine light for about two years of daily driving, until they traded it in(yikes. I thought they were going to drive until scrap yard bound, go figure!

It's not easy to find a 750mA test light in the retail world, most incandescent lights are about 75-150. I wonder if there is a source for really high current bulbs that fit into the OTC light probe. As you say, for an LED circuit it won't matter that there is a little upstream resistance added with the test light. People just have to remember that with high resistance loads, even medium current lights won't pull enough juice to glow when drawing current. Even so, the added reassurance you're not going to melt something upstream is nice. Well done Eric!

Eric: it is _not_ a hood, it is a bonnet. And those are not cotter pins they are split pins. I literally inspected 250, 000 Oldsmobile cars during final assembly. I inspected the right front wheel assembly to make sure five _cotter_ pins were installed correctly. Each had a printed line on the inspection sheet, and between both sides the sheet repeated the word cotter _ten_ times. The word split was nowhere to be seen. It so pisses me off that the English speakers from England post comments about you using the American English words for car parts.

Who wants their engine light fixed It's the most useless signal light in a car! If it's on, you don't get DOT and the sticker, even if the car is running fine, if there is a real problem the car won't run in the first place, and I don't think that there is something that might break by ignoring the engine light, it's not like the oil pressure warning light, it's called the money light for a reason, you don't get the sticker because the light is on and have to pay 1000$ because some useless sensor is broken.

I agree with 'the auction' being full of scum. So are the dealerships, Ive bought n sold many vehicles and its one of the worst industries ive dealt with. You have to learn which ones are good and which are iffy. I had a vehicle that has a inline device to lie about the mileage and turn off the mil. My oh so favorite one right now if you see the same car come up run away from it. Someone is buying them, doing engine/trans swaps, and throwing them back up for sale.

10 years of doing this. I think it's time for you to start cashing in. You need to start putting ads on your videos. You could be making $10k per video for a simple 1 minute ad read at the very beginning of each video. It's not selling out, it's just how the internet and show business works. You're already burdening your family by being in the public eye. Cash in your chips and start stacking that ad money already. It's time

Good ole cut or corroded or check engine light. Somebody or something making work for us.
Had a GM G van that failed cause the CE light didn't work during a smog test. NICE! The harness was 3 times the size of the one you were working on, so a nice piece of wire from the cluster to the brain wrapped in it's own split loom and boom. Passed smog test.

The first note of concern on ANY Traverse or Acadia is a MIL that doesn't come on. Those cars have so many problems, that light is on standard straight from the factory. Like you, most of the ones I have had in the shop that just got purchased from a used car lot had the MIL led scratched off the circuit board inside the cluster. That's an impressive effort to swindle a potential buyer!

For the love of god please stop using that harbor freight junk. 1. The founder is an absolute scumbag and is crazy in bed in china. 2. The autel is laid out so much better. That icon tool is junk in my opinion. But i can see the value for a DIYer. Ik it it a promotion thing but how much longer until we get back to autel

I bought an RV that ran well, after a year, when I went to smog it. It failed. why, tech couldn't get the check engine light on. However, it was on. Best case scenario though, someone had pulled the bulb. Got the bulb replaced, and an oxygen sensor later, it's ran great for the past few years. Overall, feel pretty lucky.

Eric if you go to PHAD Saturn Astra video. I was the client that worked on it before Ivan. It all started. when I scanned the car. It had codes but no CEL. Took the instrument cluster apart and found they taped over the LED. At least the didn't scrape the led or the trace on the board.

No, cutting the wire like that isn't the cleanest fix for the engine light, if you are smart, you cut the wire and connect it to another signal light which behaves similar ABS or so, then it turns on when key on, and goes out with engine running, then probably no one will ever notice.

I bought a '85 Chev Celebrity that had cigarette pack foil wrapped around the Mil bulb. It turned out that the harness connecter was turned upside down (probably from the factory) at the firewall, causing the wires to rub and short onto the power steering bracket.

I knew a used car guy and they always sabotaged cars they were going to bid on to get them cheaper. They would break things that were easy to fix that would bring the price down. No MIL would increase value, so I doubt if they ever did this.

Eric O, I just had to check one of these last week and dangit I would have much rather watched a great SMA video than look up service info to see what pin that was on, just a little too late. Lol Thank you for you time and knowledge as usual.

It was never covered why the check engine light needed to be sabotaged by the crook. If the light was on at the end of the video why not say as normal, I'll call the customer and see if they want to pursue.
