Cassius Clay, The Rock, Arnie. They all successfully re-invented themselves after cult status, and now Porsche is trying to do the same with the 718 'Boxster'. Question is though, now the straight six is defunct, does the new four-pot have what it takes?

If you check the facts, the 981 base and S models have lower emissions than the 718 base or S. The 981 base and S are ULEV rated. -Ultra Low Emission Vehicle- where the 718 has a less efficient rating of LEV or -Low Emission Vehicle- which is the least efficient rating permitted in California. The sad thing is that in trying to decrease emissions with the 718 they actually increased them. For all Porsche's efforts they removed the sports car sound, arguably made it less attractive and sadly made it less efficient which has rewarded them with 40% less sales than the 981 over an equivalent time period.

Turbos are all about torque and power. You can only get more power by getting more fuel into an engine. There are two ways to do it; more revs or forced induction.
The six was hard work and noisy, the 718 is fast everywhere and a vast improvement, it flies from any speed anywhere. Everything is easier, faster and more relaxing. The GT4 rear suspension is also a lot better and enables faster cornering.
The 718 completely outclassed the 981.
I-ve just got mine and I-m sold.

Honestly, I prefer the sound of the 718. Ever since Porsche started putting roughly equal-length exhaust headers on their sixes, the sound has been a bit. clinical. Now the engine note has some personality again. whether or not it -sounds like a Porsche- may well depend on whether you're old enough to remember when some Porsches had flat-4 motors, or even when the flat 6's still had that nice boxer rumble. IMO this is a return to form. Count me as a fan of the 718.

Why a flat 4? Because people that buy this car want to balance consumption with performance!
You want more sound just instal the performance exhaust it's and optional or go to akropovic and put more 5hp and crazy sounds.
That engine got a lot of work and i think porsche thought about his customers, probably the younger, that want performance, style, money, consumption and most important that porsche qualtiy & badge

I don't understand it when reviewers are switched between similar cars. As for example was done here. It makes it impossible to compare - one of the primary points of reviews. Steve Sutcliffe reviewed Cayman S, GTS, Boxster Spyder and other Porsches. Why didn't he review this car? I'd love his opinion on the new engine.

The Very first piece of shit Porsche Boxter in history. and YES it is RUINED by the Turbo fever shit that is attacking all the Iconical sport cars we all used to love. SAD so SAD. if I want flat 4 pot turbo shit Id pick a Subaru instead I wonder whos the idiots that can spent that much of money on a fake sport car like this?

no doubt, the GTS sounds better, but when I drove a new (leftover) GTS back to back with the 718S, I found the 718S to feel much more powerful and better in every way. also the GTS looked great, but immediately old as -last year's model-. same price, I went for the 718S. don't regret it.

As good as it is, I don't like how supercars and performance cars have become so refined. Refinement is just boring. I suppose everyone who buys these cars new are not necessarily car enthusiasts though, they are people who live a life of luxury who buy them as status symbols.

What a silly twerp! The 718 is a much faster and better car in every respect, particularly when you-re overtaking, which was a bit of a struggle with the wheezy old six.
Sensible thing to do is try one for yourself, which is what I did and why I bought a 718.
