A thought for you next time Eric. After tightening the U bolts, give them and surrounding springs, base plate and spacers a few love taps with a decent size hammer. Every time I have done that, a few things settle just a bit further into place. Then a bit of re-torquing and few more love taps til the settling has all settled and no change to the nuts' torque. Normally two or three love tap sessions gets everything settled. I have previously been caught (even when all bits everywhere are new) when later some of those things settle when the trailer/car or whatever comes back and the U bolts are re-torqued, the nuts going around sometimes half a turn. That's my two cents worth from below the Equator in the Land Down Under.

Now and then I laugh at the car show judges commentary because when working on a customers vehicle the big key in being a decent mechanic is NO collateral damage and put it back the way it was, undisturbed so to speak. That kind of goes along with the judges observation too but it all makes sense regardless. if you moved something for access, put it back the way you found it, if you broke something replace it with the same item and so on.
It really is a disturbance to drop off a vehicle for repairs and get it back with all kinds of alterations and damaged plastic etc. Love the camera angles on this one. torque them bolts.

I remember doing rear leafs on a Mack truck and the spring pack was SO heavy, we took the center bolt out and put the spring back into the truck leaf by leaf. the spring had to weigh over 200 pounds and all cramped underneath, it was easier and safer to do it the way we did. I got PTSD when you put the gun on the first bolt and it rained down rust and dust. ah, the good old days. lucky those bolts even came out, usually they would freeze solid in the bushing and that was another problem

Wow!
The guy that owns it loves that truck!
Nothing like a bunch of new parts when you look under
The aluminum mudflaps are nice, until you catch your forehead or arm on them
Totally amazing the spring eye bolts came out, and all the u bolt nuts also!
Judging from what we can see of the truck it has another decade left in it.

350 pound feet is pretty light weight. Back when I worked for a forestry equipment manufacturer we had a 600 pound torque wench we used on the chipper shaft hub bolts among other things. And they weren’t even the biggest, our gear box slides had 1 1/4 studs, we used a 1 inch drive ratchet with a 4 foot cheater handle to tighten them down.

Excellent. I was totally surprised those u-bolt nuts came loose, when I worked on trucks I took a yellow paint pen and put 2-3 stripes down then so you can see how fast it turns, we worked in the dark a lot, It's amazing how heavy things get when you get a little older, I also own a car with screws to hold the dash in. Keep on truckin.

Yep, you’re getting up there. Maybe it’s time for another intern. I’m 79 and it’s a little bit of a chore sometimes to work on the chevys. Screw them judges, if it’s good enough for you it’s good enough for the customer. That’s why they go to you. Thanks for the get real video.

Id love to just talk to the person that decided the forward leaf-to-frame bolt on the drivers side of the 15-present F-150s in from the inner side right next to the gas tank. Just did the spring a couple months back on my '16 F150 and ford wants you to drop the tank. sawzall says nah

I was reusing part of an exhaust hanger and I had just put down the cutoff wheel. Applied the impact and whacked my finger so bad it took a year for the nail to grow out. With my cutting, I had basically made a flag nut and it got me just as eric describes. Luck I didn't lose the finger.

AI Says: A single factory-style rear leaf spring assembly for a Ford F-250 typically weighs between 110 and 150 pounds (per side. The exact weight depends heavily on the model year, the number of leaves in the pack, and the truck's specific suspension or payload package.

We used to have a fantastic Spring shop local
And a ton of machine shops, then the steel industry went down and that was a lot of their major customers. Now it's hard to find even a machine shop that we'll do heads. And other critical machining.

That’s a damn nice stork wrench. Doing those leaf springs is definitely a big job. That’s not for the faint of heart.
But it’s nice to see and very heartwarming to know that Ford still includes factory, rust, in all of their trucks.

I don't know how you got those u bolt nuts off without the help of a torch. Or how you knew they would come loose I have never done so without the use of a torch. I used to be able to torch off the nuts and reuse the u bolts!

'While maintaining eye contact ' vaulted into the #1 position of funniest comments by Eric category (most coveted, and I venture to guess it will reign there in perpetuity. Great video. hello to the Mrs. and young ones.

Hopefully you have the little sign that used to be in most independent mechanics offices of the guy rolling on the floor laughing with the caption You Want it When, keeps the customers unreasonable expectations in check.

I've done trailer shackles, but this one looks to be over my head. I appreciate that you let us come along (remembering all the times having my vehicle in the shop and them not allowing back in the work area.

Man, I so feel it. I don't wanna do this, man I too have been there - dude, I could so feel that I just wanted to stop the video and go to the house. Excellent video, and thank you for posting these.

I too have to give myself the don't be a pussy, you can do this pep talk from time to time as I get older. It gets harder physically but, like Toby Keith said my pride says oh yes you can
reply

My Concern is. my dad told me that you should not raise the vehicle by the pumpkin because it may bend the tubes where the weight of the vehicle is supported by the springs. What is your experience
