We live in a world of buttons, or at least we did, until touch came along. Now, a touchscreen backlash brewing, Clayton takes a look back at the history of buttons with help from button expert Rachel Plotnick, author of Power Button: A History of Pleasure, Panic, and the Politics to see why gamers treat buttons and touchscreens a little bit differently. I am borrowing a friends 2021 buick encore. Nice little machine that has a ticking time bomb of an engine. But I was actually kind of excited to get to know an to use Android Auto. I have watched him use carplay in that and was pretty impressed with how handy it was. Until I started to use it. You have a lot of voice options. except for what would be really useful. Opening apps, and playing messages. I can ask my phone assistant to open any app with no issue. But I cannot get that done in the buick. Get a text, I have to tap the touch screen. Open the messages, tap the screen, open the map, tap the screen. Makes no sense for something to be touted as totally hands free. What is worse as the buttons tend to be tiny and imprecise. So i have to look over quickly an tap it just to do what I am trying to do, only to realize it did not accept the interaction, not once, but multiple times. I have gotten to the point where I use multiple fingers to perform any taps now. Does it work, sometimes. but its not easy when yer driving.

Steam Deck and the Steam Controller are trying to replace buttons/analog sticks with trackpads with haptic feedback to fake buttons, I never liked it though. Laptops have already moved away from trackpad/trackpoint buttons and just have a bigger trackpad and using haptics to fake buttons, young kids are also growing up with touch screens, so I feel like the next generation of gamers may unfortunately not care about buttons.

Button-Related Spoilers for a 1964 episode of Doctor Who, Edge of Destruction
There was a whole psychological horror time travel situation caused LITERALLY by the SPRING inside one of the Tardis buttons getting stuck, causing the Doctor and his companions to hit their heads and descend into paranoia and attempted murder.
There’s also a button that dispenses milk.

This video really could have used a bigger mention about how buttons aid people with disabilities. The talk of convenience is important in regards to the way that individuals and societies interact, but one person's convenience can be necessary if you have a disability. Also, the joystick to powerchair connection would have been neat to see more of.

screens should all be touchscreens
BUT smartphones should be the pnly thing that doesnt also include buttons and screens arent needed everywhere. i dont need a screen on an appliance like a frodge or toaster that does one thing
a tiny touchscreen AND buttons on the washer good.
only a touchscreen in my car bad very bad.

I cannot stress how dangerous touch screen interfaces in a car are. physical button can be interacted with without looking, a touch screen cant be. and the touch screen buttons are these flashing distracting lights. they are an objective danger on the road.

if it's ok I'd and since it's relevant, I'd love to point my fellow button enjoyers towards Switched Adapted Toys, a non-profit organization that uses the power of the humble button to make toys more accessible to children with disabilities

Might have to buy a Mazda when its time for a new car as they're seemingly the only manufacturer that doesn't just slap a bigass shitty ipad vs actual tacticle buttons that I can feel around for while driving

The button-less power and eject 'buttons' on the PS4 were the first things to make me absolutely loathe this descent into button-less madness.
(And excellent and super interesting video, thank you)

I was sold on buttons by my experiences trying to emulate on my phone, where all of the emulators use touch-controls. They're so bad that only certain games, like RPGs, are really playable on them.

I love buttons and will die for physical buttons in cars but I will never be on board with joysticks that click. I just don't like how it feels okay!

I find it funny that I work the cliche job with a Big Red Botton. I’ve only need to use it once thankfully.

I love how one of the intro montage sequence (the crosswalk button) isn't actually a button. It's a pressure sensitive panel that doesn't move.

fun fact: the EU recently decided to update their car saftey requirements that certain functions have to be on buttons instead of touchscreens

with all this talk about buttons I expected some mention of rhythm games alongside fighting games. but this is a cool video nevertheless

I think about installing a bunch of switches and buttons in my car so i can feel like a jet or spaceship turning them all on.

the haptic feedback on the steamdeck touchpads feel great imo. granted it's not the same thing as a touchscreen, but similar enough.

Not to be a Luddite but touch screens, Wi-Fi and (especially generative) AI being shoved on everything makes me lose my walnuts
