Horror, Melodrama, and Porn Are the Same Genre - FiendZone

They may seem unrelated, but horror, melodrama, and porn are all rooted in the same need One of the interesting things Ive noticed in watching Korean melodramas (at least the historical flavored ones, is that frequently the men cry just as often as the women, and definitely engage in emotional excess (running away from families, murderous rampages, rashly confronting an enemy that is going to wreck their shit, etc. Id be interested in a comparison of gender and emotion in Korean melodrama and horror vs American melodrama and horror. Theres still plenty of stereotypical gender stuff going on, but in a different way.\r\n

This is amazing to see! I literally wrote an essay about this topic for my Media university degree! For those interested in further reading, Linda Williams discussed this a LOT (and coined the term. The best introduction is her essay 'Film Bodies: Gender, Genre and Excess' as well as her book 'Laughing, Crying'

I've been thinking lately that -furry- and -singularity- media have both been pointing toward a new category of body-genre that allows people to project themselves into bodily modes that don't (yet) exist. But most creators in those two genres don't quite think in those terms, and so the genres feel -stuck-.

Really interesting! I wonder how these views are changing with the times since video games have been equally gendered to be -only for boys- either in marketing or in the sheer volume of Let's Players - how that shift from extreme emotion of onscreen and demographic has affected how we intake the media.

AHHHHHHHHHH! I'm all about this series, it's reminding me so much of why I decided to major in English (never mind the different mediums, the sentiment is the same in both) and why I really just love the humanities and media arts so much. I wait with bated breath for the next installment of this series: )

I-m pondering how mediation affects my experience of horror. I love horror games but am a big baby about horror movies. Maybe my empathetic response to the characters being scared is stronger than my response to being scared myself. Thanks for provoking these weird thoughts!

My dear Jenna. It is a -fact- that women are less tolerant to stress than men in general. There are clear gender differences, they are not socially constructed. Of course, movies tend to exaggerate. Such a wonderful video almost ruined by your political indoctrination.

I saw something similar in romantic comedies, where men are put through ridiculous hoops, to impress a woman, and she falls for him, only after he raises his gift giving to a different level. Which is both fake and not how desire works in the first place: )

Jenna, this was fantastic! I've never really liked these body genres much, but I couldn't really understand why. This really opened my eyes as why to why, but also gave me new respect for the genres! Can't wait for the next video!

I thought for sure this was going to be a film about -Basic Instinct-, which is essentially all three of the body genres. I loved this video Jenna, wish it was longer and that I could like it twice. Please do more of this series!

I had always wondered why horror always stars women and never really showed male characters really being horrified to the same extent female characters are shown to be horrified. Now I know a little more than I did before

So excited to see where this series goes next! This is really interesting and informative, especially by making CONNECTIONS I would never have come upon myself. ;)
I'm not sure if that makes sense as an innuendo.

you know what porn's for? it's for men to beat off to. It sucks that without the greatness of the McElbros, this site is just gonna turn into up-its-own-ass, pseudointellectual 'soft-boi-nonbinary' gamer SuperDeluxe

So are body genres extra hot versions of the media belong to because they engage with our animal brains more directly that pieces from the same medium that require more intentional -reading? -

Got my attention from the first sentence and now I HAVE to come back for the next vid. Way to go Jenna. Also, I'm now styling my hair like yours cause wow that's a super cute style.

This is such a cool video! I'm terrified by horror, but analyses like this on the genre and its facets are so incredibly interesting to me. I think I'm going to love this series!

The concept of this is fine, but I get the sensation that this is reading too deeply into things and a counter argument could be done to unravel the points made here.

This is great stuff, Jenna. Thank you - and mirroring other comments, this could definitely stand to be longer with more examples, I'd happily watch twenty minutes of these.

i recently wrote an essay on It Follows for my horror class and i wish i had known more about the body genre so i could have mentioned some of these points!
