DC Comics earns a most improved award for (finally) ditching the New 52 and revitalizing their lineup with Rebirth. But what was the New 52, and why is DC better off without it? Read Susana's full write-up here!

I am enjoying the Superman comics as much as you do, but I do think that all the superman thing was mishandled, specially if you are a new reader. If you get a superman comic the first thing you read is that Superman is dead and this superman is from another universe and is now living here, and supermans universe was the old comics universe which dissapeared but somehow he's still there. How weird is that?
And because of that, not only they killed the other superman (and I enjoyed this take on him a lot, but now everytime superman is in a comic, either his own or JL or wherever he shows up, you have to spend half a page reading about how he's not from this universe and just revealed himself to the world. Which is EXTREMELY tyring.
And I know that DC will probably spend some more time doing this and then not mention it again and just pretend he's always been there. In the JL vs SSquad cross over Superman meets max lord and they have an exchange, as if they met before. Superman is talking to Max Lord as if he was the max Lord from his universe, and Max lord is talking to superman as if he were a superman he met or knew, and not the superman from another universe that is replacing the superman that died. Its crazy and it doesn't make sense, but DC will get tired of superman meeting every character of this universe for the first time AGAIN.

In my opinion, the problem with comics is that we focus on making SUPER characters not SUPER. Let's make them more human, more real, give them real problems like normal people have. Well folks, these are super heroes, they aren't on the same wave length as us -civilians- these are people with super human powers that can destroy entire civilizations. I think this is why I learn towards Super Villain characters versus heroes. Lex is, to simply put, jealous of Superman, that's all he is. He is a human and he wants what Superman has, and believes Superman isn't using his powers to his full potential. But debating this online would take a ridiculous amount of time and I want to avoid that at this moment.

New 52 was a mess but it was not more complicated than pre-52 or Rebirth. I've had more of tough time explaining the DC universe to friends now more than ever. Not leaning either for or against but I think a lot of people don't realize how convoluted things have gotten.
The same things she mentioned about Superman are the very things that turned me and so many readers away from Superman. We already have so many 'grounded' characters and that's why Batman leap-frogged Supes and became the face of DC. But everyone has their own tastes and preferences.

DC Rebirth had to have been part of the plan since before the New 52. The -52- is a reference to the time on Dr. Manhattan's watch and the mark on the comedians smiley badge which Rebirth finally reveals. Also, I'm not sure if this show is for comic fans or not. You don't seem excited about these stories at all but increasingly sarcastic: like you're being forced to review something against your will. You could at least lead with some interest in the subject matter because I finished this video with no interest in watching the next.

Something that bugged me from word one in the New 52 was Cyborg's place in the Justice League. I like him being there, but it seemed like he was a huge afterthought in a metatextual sense. Like he was only there at all because the roster without him was extremely white. Every other member of the team had their own book. Some two. Batman had four. Cyborg didn't have his own for a number of years, and that seemed like a huge missed opportunity.

Yeah exactly what I was going to say it's amazing that the idiots at DC took so much time to figure out that the people that they make money off of are the same people they've been making money off of for years and they're invested in those characters in those stories that they've been reading since childhood Not only was New 52 horrible but rebirth is almost just as bad in my opinion in fact it may be worse

I'm wanting to get in to comic books but dont really know how/where to start. I dont get the whole new 52 and rebirth stuff. I want to be able to actually understand a series and not just jump in at the middle or not know what is happening. Can anyone explain or help?
Thank You!

Excellent video it's excellent because I agreed with EVERY WORD! I felt so alone out there during the new 52 I thought o was missing something and it was just sooooo horrible. And I felt like everyone around me was blind. Now I know I wasn't crazy

I love hearing the occasional comments from Tara Long in the back of these episodes, it adds a lot for me.
Also I don't read much DC. ever (except for some Vertigo titles) and this makes me want to go out and pick up Dad! Superman. Thanks!

reply

Thanks to this video, Susana, I've picked up the first Superman HC. Loved it! Now reading TPs 3 & 4. Also branching off into Action Comics, Batman and more.
And I read Superman American Alien which was also fantastic. so thanks!

Huh. What a surprisingly interesting way to handle the New 52. I may actually get back into it, at least the Superman part. It sounds like an interesting story and a much more creative idea than I've seen from DC in a long time.
reply

Dude I love this series? I've always wanted to GET into comics but I didn't understand anything about the timelines and reboots and where I should start but every time I watch one of these episodes I feel more confident
reply

I feel like I'd probably be a lot more into it if I'd been reading right before the new 52. and right before rebirth, lol. Even understanding everything that's going on, I can't really get myself into it.
reply

Also Superman related titles are so good that when checking the overall comic book publishers, they're consistently below top 20 and top 30.
Again a great work by DC, no doubt about it xD

reply

the fact that you had to mention that they only hired only two female creator. Enough already. Writers and artist are hired based on skills not gender. relax with the fem plugs.
reply

Sounds great. if you're a long-time fan looking for something different and expansive. For casual fans looking to grab a TPB about the superhero they grew up with, this ain't it.
reply

the only comics i own i got at an auction of the overstock for an out of business comics shop, but honestly after seeing this video i kinda want to buy some rebirth comics?
reply

Thumbs up for -I was trying to murder the Nu52 with my mind. - I've wanted to read an ongoing Superman since All-Star so I'm excited to try this new series.
reply

That Kate Beaton shirt tho! Also, couldn't agree more about the end of the New 52, I've got so much renewed faith in DC right now (in the comics, at least.
reply

I haven't read a superhero comic in a long long time but this got me intrigued about Superman.
Also, I'm digging the hell out of that Beaton shirt.

reply

I absolutely cannot wait for the next Robin episode. The Batfamily was what got me into comics, and made me stay away from the New 52. Yay for Rebirth!
reply

Haven't read a Superman comic since Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen when I was a kid, and this has made a solid case for me maybe jumping back in.
reply

Say what you will about the New 52, but it is the main reason me and my girlfriend read comics today so I will always be thankful for that.
reply

. and then Dan Didio and Jim Lee returned to regain their faulty baby, killing a Rebirth in the process and sales went down again.
reply

So, is DC Rebirth a good jumping on point for DC comics, having never read anything before it? Does it depend on the title?
reply

DC has been killing it lately with rebirth which makes me so happy its too bad marvel has been failing lately in there comics
reply

Wait, rebirth? Is that the follow-up after the events of Convergence? That's the last one I read, I think I missed sg: -(
reply

Batman's hollow white dot eyes when Jon looks down gave me the chills, something I haven't had with batman in a long time
reply

I was sad when I found out that they had cancelled Gotham By Midnight. It was so well written and engaging. So good!
reply

Only 2 female creators, oh no! And here I was worried about the content I was to purchase instead of author genitals.
