Nerf Arena Blast 27 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective

Nerf Arena Blast 27 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective

It's Unreal Tournament! But softer! Nerf Arena Blast is a classic arena FPS with more than a passing resemblance to UT99. They use the same Unreal engine and were developed alongside each other, but after you get past the Total Conversion Mod feel of it, Arena Blast reveals its own distinct and colorful identity. Let's look back at it 27 years later here on LGR! I grew up playing Super Smash Brothers, Goldeneye, Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat with my friends. I don't really play Killer Instinct or Mortal Kombat anymore, or even Super Smash Brothers since I don't own an N64 console, but, perhaps I can figure something out. In the mean time, I'll take some Goldeneye Source with my buddies here and there and be good with that. :)

Just from the thumbnailI was thinking that is either UT or something on idTech 3.
And it has everything to be a decent arena shooter. The Nerf logo makes a good arena shooter logo, the franchise is well known. There is some shooting, but family friendly.
Oh, and it coming out before UT99 isn't weird. Half-Life 2 wasn't the first Source engine game either.

nerf is build 300, where the original release of unreal/unrealgold is 220/225/227, UT99 builds start around 300(336-436-469)
alot of the maps/content are backport able, nerf uses vertex models. somone could easily make the entire game type a mod for ut99 if they had the time.
source: i used to be a unrealgold modder but dont have time anymore

I found the demo in college after a gift of an actual Nerf gun sent me searching on line.
I played the demo for hours even though my computer was pretty slow and didn’t have a high quality graphics card.
Though I eventually got the full game those first two levels from the demo are still my favorite. It’s quite a rush dominating those maps.

I should add a point of clarification that besides a name and function about bots finding a controller bind, there is no information on what the LabRat gamemode was intended to be. I created the admittedly low-effort cheese-hunting gameplay as a bit of a joke. I even spoke to the lead designer myself and he had no knowledge of the mode.

2: 50 The Nintendo 128 was a very good game system.
Also, it's 1999 and Hasbro wants to know if you own a 3DO or CDi. (I don't know how long CDi support actually lasted, but it's funny that ask about the Jaguar since Hasbro owned its legal rights. I wonder if they were planning to actually make anything for it still)

Leading players being worth more points and having to pick up the points from their body
Those are some interesting balancing elements. If you're top scoring, people will come for you. And you can't sit in your sniping nest, because all those hits are worthless if you don't go out there to pick up the dogtags

Me and my neighbor bought this game when it came out. We were 11 in '99.
My parents were extremely religious so computer simulated violence was off the table, but computer simulated Nerf battles they could get on board with, because it was a lot harder for us to break lamps and knock pictures off the wall.

A bit of a lost mod that's basically Nerf for Quake 3 (and community made, with a great metal soundtrack you'd love) is World of Padman, I remember looking for it semi-recently and it was very much lost media. If you manage to find it I'm sure you'll love it, and I certainly would love a video on it haha

I knew about this game and played a demo. This feels more like Unreal multiplayer but touched up by someone who had a decent idea what makes mp shooter enjoyable.
I have also realised that this may be a bit more skill based than UT due to all weapons being projectile based, no hitscan guns here.

This was aesthetically a good looking game for 99'.
I had the purple bow growing up, as well as the Secret shot and Sneak shot. They were still in the toy box at my parents house until a few years ago when they moved and threw them out.
The Nerf toys today, notably the darts are much better.

This is just going by memory. Unreal used Unreal Engine 1. 0. UT99 used a modified version called Unreal Engine 1. 5. I remember playing the multiplayer part of the original Unreal. it came with bots. I suspect that Nerf Arena used the modified Unreal Engine 1. 5 because of the improved net code.

Very graphically impressive game for the time! I never got my hands on it, but I loved UT and Quake, so I'm sure I would have worn this one out too.
I'd love if this one was remade or given an official patch with some modern features/servers with Win10/11 support.

I remember the Pulsator being absolutely busted because it had hitscan on the alt fire and that was the only hitscan in the game, which was pretty funny in mid 2000s internet Nerf culture because the IRL the Pulsator is one of the worst things Nerf ever put out

Stoked to see someone talk about NAB! I return to it a few times each year for my twitch-fps fix - there's a certain je-ne-sais-quoi that distinguishes it from the UTs. Hoping this stimulates the community servers! Would love to play against real people again

I do not understand why the most recent Nerf game was just, UT again, porting UT3 to Unreal Engine 4 then shoving a bunch of Nerf toys in it and tweaking some mechanics should have been that difficult, they already had figured out the formula decades ago.
reply

I bet this is actually more of a reskin of Unreal multiplayer then Unreal Tournament, if there's a map selection botmatch option try dropping in some of the map files from Unreal in the map folder (I know it does work from Unreal Gold to U. T)
reply

Ah, unreal tournament
It was definitely my favourite FPS of all time
And it taught me a valuable lesson - just because they made a more powerful rocket launcher in the redeemer, doesn't mean rocket jumping will be better with it

reply

Nope, never had this, or even a Nerf product. Those I knew who had them either lost half of the bullets, or they were only half intact. I first had a 486 in 2002, so I didn't have the opportunity to play many PC games back then.
reply

This game is so nostalgic for me. My younger brothers and I still will occasionally yell YYYYYAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOO at each other; that voice line as you slide down that part of that one map will be in my head until the day I die.
