Forsaken DLC: Can Bungie Save Destiny 2?

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Today Bungie introduced the next expansion pack for Destiny 2: Forsaken. After a rough year, are they doing enough to get Destiny 2 back on track? We take a look at the announcements and whether they're on the right track

I have played every mission, side quest, adventure, patrol, strike and raid in Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 and I came up with a list of things that each game does better then the other and why.
Main Story: DestinyDestiny2; Destiny had amazing dlc that almost always delivered to the community, although the gap between the Taken King and Rise of Iron was quite large and dry at least the missions were fun and the exotic quests weren't too long or too tedious.
Endgame: Destiny>Destiny2; Destiny had activities that kept players going for almost a year meanwhile Destiny2 is struggling to keep players active for a little over a month.
Weapon system: Destiny>Destiny2; no random roles, common Weapon slot system, Underwhelming Exotics Destiny wins no questions asked.
What Destiny 2 NEEDS: Destiny 2 should have always been an offensive, Take back what was stolen game Destiny was always -Push back the Darkness- and -Protect the last safe city- vibe. Destiny 2 has the potential to revive the offensive vibe and hopefully recreate those memory's we had in Destiny but not completely copy the concepts. Forsaken seems like the perfect Dlc to add a PoE type mode (I know about Gambit but this is for the pure PvE players) but make it more of a challenge and avoid crossing it over with PoE.
This took me 10 mins to type and longer to think of so a positive rating or a reply would be very much appreciated! :)

So what Im getting is that bungie has zero idea how to meet in the middle with story and gameplay, and that they can only take tiny steps or super massive ones. Im not mad, but I've been defending the situation (but not bungie or activision although they both have a part to play in this mess. They have absolutely no idea how to handle things, they carve ice with hammers and statues with paint brushes. End game content is not grindy enough? Let's make warmind very hard to get into end game with (endgame content needs 350 light but the soft cap is 340, annnnddddd lets make the weapons grindy (read Diablo 3 rifting) in the next one. Light level looks like its gonna be 600 so either they make it a literal lifestyle to play bungie or they make it a hobby. like they said they wanted to. Either way, rumour has it that bungie is jumping ship after d2 so we will finally get to see whether or not bungie cares about its community or is in it for the money.

I really don-t understand the argument for free dlc for destiny. Their engine would be awful for producing free content unlike Epics. Look at the aftermath of TTK before ROI as an example. Bad! But seriously, paying for a 40 dollar expansion plus a 30 dollar pass that pays for 3 dlcs isn-t that bad of a deal. Plus, it-s not hard to make 70 dollars at all. But, as good as it is, I-m gonna wait till the last second to preorder to see if it-s a safe bet to get it. It looks amazing, definitely a step in the right direction. But Bungie loves to overhype stuff. Another concern is if the majority of people would actually get it. Big expansion or vanilla Destiny trailers used to get millions of views. This is only a few hundred thousand at the moment. Hopefully, someone or something will make it more relevant. Because it doesn-t matter how good or ambitious you are if you don-t get the attention you do or don-t deserve

I enjoyed Destiny 2. up to a certain point. And then it got boring. The first expansion was meh, and I haven't yet bothered with the second expansion. It's such a -beautiful- game, that at first that's enough. The solo PVE story missions and open world stuff isn't too challenging to take on, even if you're not a Pro Jamer. The other stuff had a HUGE learning curve though! It seems like so many of these games require you to read guides and shit just to play them competently, and that's frustrating for someone who doesn't have time to invest in learning to play a game so they can enjoy playing the game. Or maybe would like to use that time for playing other games, or just playing this one without studying first?

Russ, you are such a good boye.
Russ, I don't mean to call you out here but did you pay attention to the stream? Their viewer numbers constantly ROSE during the stream plus the chat was going crazier than I've ever seen in a Bungie stream. Sure, you could chalk that up to hype, but almost everything they said minus the season pass sounds like a thoroughly considered and much needed change. The weapon mods, the new weapon system, the raid having more bosses than ever, the Gambit mode, the collection. it all sounds like EXACTLY what people have been asking for since the early days of D1. I'm sure even skeptical Datto is cautiously optimistic.

Okay, I'm prefacing this comment by saying I never played D1. But I. really enjoy D2. Do players hate D2 because it's different than D1, or are there specific things about D2 as a standalone game that make people hate it? Based on the video, it seems a LOT like the disappointment is in direct comparison to D1. Which is fine! Like, I've got no beef about that. But I'm flummoxed about it otherwise.
Anyway, I'm happy about whatever they're doing. (Tho Bungie, what if. you were good. at including your expansive lore. actually IN the games you write)

I've had a blast with D2, still got Warmind to playthrough and I'm on board for Forsaken, that being said the Annual Pass not having story stuff has made me finally confront something - I'm never going to get the strong story centric game I want from Destiny, they have an interesting universe that could potentially house some fantastic stories, they just don't seem capable or willing to deliver and so I'm eyeing up Anthem more and more for the narrative fruit I'm craving.
reply

I never played D1. I just started D2 because I got it in a monthly bundle, and I 100% feel like the story is lame and cliche. It's like a slightly more boring Borderlands clone with a different aesthetic and more, -Yay! You are a good guy-, even though you slaughter 1000s of enemies without a second thought. At least Borderlands doesn't try to sell me on my in-game morality while sprinkling unconvincing (and annoying) dialogue into the mix of repetitive gameplay.
reply

At with this prices $40 for the expansion it self, $70 for the expansion + the annual pass which brings content that use to be free in the past and for those that haven't bought the two previous dlc who knows how much it will cost. I liked what I saw in the reveal and was actually thinking of getting back into the game but after seeing the prices hell no
reply

2nd And sorry bro ive given up on destiny at this point there is nothing bungie can do to make me go back to it. Bungie promised Destiny 2 would fix the issues they had with the first game but the game play is still so bad and repetitive that i could not even play past the beginning. And once again dlc after dlc i do not know how people buy into this
reply

They are charging money for the dlc. So the new patrol zone, raid, exotics, etc. But all of the in game systems that were previously broken (i. e weapon slots, random rolls) will be released for free beside the DLC REGARDLESS IF YOU HAVE PAID OR NOT. God people just like to shit on this game but you literally have nothing left to shit on.
reply

What was the point of this video? Not a single question was answered and you didn't even really give an opinion. The whole thing was -Can this new dlc fix X, Y, Z? Well we don't know its too early. -. Gee, thanks. Any other hot takes you feel like dropping? Good to see the Mcelroy brothers absence is so quickly felt.
reply

I never played D1. I like D2 a lot. I even got a Ghost tattoo last week. The game just really affected me in a great way. I don't understand the hate; I understand that Bungie is trying to make a better game and I really appreciate that. I'm very much looking forward to this new expansion!
reply

I played D1 when Taken King came out because it came with all the previous DLC and the base game as well. Forsaken still expects me to buy the previous DLC, which I heard wasn't great so I never bought it, and from what I hear Forsaken is down playing the story, so yea, not thrilling me.
reply

I am wondering, as an Expansion Pass owner, will i get the Forsaken Expansion and the Forsaken Expansions Cayde's Exotic Stash, which you get if you pre-order the expansion. Anyone have any ideas? And 2: 00 Does this mean i can finally use more then one Exotic weapon at once? Please say so!
reply

I really enjoy d2 and have never played d1 but I completely agree with what people are saying. It gets repetitive and I feel like they shouldn-t have to say -oh here pay another $80 or so just to have fun with the game again! -. I still play it and it-s fun but. Not really in the long run
reply

They should fix the game for free, demanding after all this bs at least 70 $ is a scam that surpasses even EA level scam. People who are buying this are enabeling this kind of shitty business practices. And don-t come crying and complaining after falling again for the Bungie cash grab.
reply

I dont get why Bungie can be so out of touch with what works and not. Why people like to play the game and not. It's like there is a will to change but someone high up puts on the breaks holding it back and deliberately sabotaging the game.
reply

I don-t usually disagree with Polygon videos but this game sounds like it-s parroting reddit. Warmind was great (better than most D1 small expansions) and to say the game hasn-t changed since launch is just not true.
reply

Quick answer to thumbnail. nope!
Goin on a 5yr pattern of abuse here and u either cool with that or ya not, personally. I ain-t. So I-m out.
But ya, destiny b saved by these devs and this company. nope!

reply

Hey, remember when four out of five Polygon video producers put Destiny 2 on their Top 5 GOTY lists last year, even though they agreed it was deeply flawed? I wonder if they're starting to regret that now.
reply

When there's still a ton of good zones and maps and ideas from Destiny 1 that just disappeared despite this supposedly being a 10 year platform, there's just no way to trust this dev team to do much right.
reply

I think the more accurate question is does Bungie want to save Destiny 2? Why bother when you can say, hey guys we are fixing Destiny 2 in the next expansion, and people will buy it in droves.
reply

At this point they're just being greedy there's other games I could buy$30 a rough estimate$70 for the expansion pack either or you're crazy I could buy another game
reply

They're making us pay for a new speech and pack the good one that's coming out that's crazy we had all these bullcrap expansion packs even wore mine wasn't that good
reply

I bought a season pass, I am not paying for an annual pass.
Also raids are fine, but they don't sell getting back into the game, give me fresh solo content.

reply

I'm glad they're trying to fix the game but after paying for the base game and two expansions I don't really feel like giving them more money on a maybe fix.
reply

I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that the Warmind expansion was a let down. Most everybody that actually plays the game has enjoyed it.
reply

I played some Destiny 2 this weekend. Didn't like it that much, the game it's pretty bland. I would rather play Borderlands 2 a fifth time than play this
reply

Haven-t touched D2 in 4 months but damn this actually kinda looks dope and everything I asked for at launch, I-ll probably get back this fall!
