There's no doubt the planet is changing, but how is that changing horror? im going to be writing a thesis on how we think about extinction next year and i loved this video Jenna! ecofiction offers so many interesting representations of how we pathologise our relationship to the earth. to what extent do we resign ourselves to or persevere through the nightmare were creating? what does it say about our lack of imagination that basically every scenario is apocalyptic, with maybe a tiny bit of hope tacked on to the end?
i also love how so many of these films reject the human/nature distinction through aesthetics. we become nature although its almost always represented as terrifying and unknowable (maybe just a conceit of the horror genre? or something more. my favourite scene in annihilation is when josie) just lets herself be consumed by the shimmer; that to me is not resignation but a simple acceptance that the longer we think of ourselves as separate and distinct from nature the more damage were doing to ourselves (not to mention everything else.
anyway sorry for ranting! i think ecofiction has the potential to offer us really powerful alternatives to this sort of depressive malaise where we just resign ourselves to our slow and oppressive death as a species. im not sure theres much political value in those sorts of narratives anymore. like, we get it, climate change is scary and beyond what we can imagine as individuals. and we also get that climate change deniers dont really care about the facts, so theres no point in trying to scare them anymore. therefore ecofiction shouldnt be afraid to be utopian! we need real hope! not just a handful of us surviving! we can do better!\r\n

There are no Greenhouse gases: Knight (Princeton, 1909) examined Arrhenius claims experimentally and concluded that there was no greenhouse effect. If you can do the math, Einstein's Noble prize work, starting in 1905, shows the following. For average humidity CO2 adsorption and re-admission occurs at a ratio of approximately 1/100 compared to H2O. The know H20 [average humidity] 95+% adsorption distance from a source of IR emission is less that 1 foot or 30 cm (Standard IR spectroscopy results in the 2. 0 to 3. 0 micron range. There is no observed IR readmission observed. There is however a slight increase in air temperature due to the 1000 to 1 more favorable virtual-photon (phonon) transfer of energy (potential to kinetic) to the surrounding supersonic colliding atmospheric gases. There is no back radiation and insubstantial readmission of the IR photon. Extrapolating the results for CO2, the 95% distance would be 100 x 30 cm = 3000 cm = 30 meters or about 33 yd (100 ft. The diagrams for CO2 as a greenhouse gas are juvenile fantasies. Greenhouse gases do not exist.

I know that in the Mad Max timeline, they specifically mention nuclear war as the reason everything went to shit, but if you look at what the situations in those movies, it's -way- more likely that climate devastation was the cause. I think the first movie is particularly apt because it shows a society that's rotting away and devolving into rule through strength.

Almost used this for a chemistry assignment today, but decided the accompanying article wasn't as long as the professor would probs approve of, since i was supposed to use an article, not a video. The video was super interesting though, and really would have been perfect if it was written, as well as filmed. Next time, maybe -

Is it just me, or would everyone care more about global warming, when we stop saying -We cause damage to the planet-? Because that's wrong. The planet doesn't care what we're doing. It will evolve and deal with the damage we cause.
What we're doing with global warming is killing multiple species, humans included.

The 1980s Devilman Ova explained that the demon were awaking due to global warming releasing them from the ice caps. I was pretty bummed out when I watch crybaby and they didn't address that despite being a more modern version and global warming being more of an issue now that it was in the 80s.

Isn't Annihilation about an unnatural, extra terrestrial force though? And I would argue that most of these examples aren't -defeatist- because they all contain stories of human perseverance. They're really showing how the strength of human will can conquer any challenge, even the apocalypse.

Wanted: Dead or Alive! Ah! This is going in my likes just for that
(That said this is a super nifty and thought provoking lil video that made me realize just how much ecohorror stuff I've seen! It's actually the easiest horror genre for me to watch for some reason? And my favorite)

What about -The Day of the Triffids, - the original Thing, the -Stuff, - and need I have to say -Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. - Killer plant movies are plenty and have always been a thing in horror since the 40's. I'm not saying that genre hasn't increase of late but it was always there.

I wouldn't mind a remake of The Happening. I didn't like that movie, but it had some interesting ideas that I felt would have been really compelling in the eyes of a different writer or director. I don't think good films need to be remade, okay/bad films with good ideas need to be remade.

Let's be realistic, people won't change, we'll ruin the earth and then die, the government isn't even trying to change anything. People deserve it, people think about the reward instead of the result. I can guarantee you that in the next 1000 years we'll go extinct if not earlier.

Has anyone here read The Plant People, by Dale Carson? About aliens turning people who contributed to environmental decay into cacti. It messed third grade me up. This thing was a children's novel where most of the characters were slowly hypnotized and killed.

Jenna this was fantastic! I would love to see more video-based criticism like this. I wonder if you've seen First Reformed, which isn't a horror movie but also features an existential crisis triggered by the reality of climate change.

the weather has legit gotten strange with the temperature and seasons not lining up and weather acting down right crazy lately when it's suppose to be getting cold I blame man all around and it's catching up with us

Godzilla, one of the most prominent and oldest examples of the arrogance of man against nature, recently took to the plant rout as well. with the most recent depiction of godzilla being a plant based creature.

My favourite eco-horror is more of a prequel: Edge of Darkness (no no no NO not the Mel Gibson abomination) which ends with a clear message that the planet is going to stop putting up with our shit soon.

This is such an interesting idea and now that it's been mentioned, it really is getting more apparent in horror. It's funny how we put in to media what we fear but at the same time caused to happen.

I thought Annihilation was an alien species, it's still Eco horror though. It also looked for a while like The Mist tv show was going to be about nature getting revenge only they discarded that line.

lmao i watched the day after tomorrow way too many times as a kid, that guy's movies are bananas. didn't realize the ruins was eco-horror though, gonna have to check it out sometime.

When confronted with danger, we are hard wired for the -fight or flight- response. Global warming activists are fighters.

reply

just picked up this series and its so interesting & concise! great job Jenna, I can't wait to see more. and in the meantime I've got some more movies to watch: )
reply

God, I love this series. Jenna is just so intelligent and these are always so interesting that I'm always left going -ANOTHER- and smashing down my mug.
reply

I like this theory a lot but Annihilation should really fall more in with the body snatchers category of extraterrestrial that looks like plant life
reply

Aaaand now I've gotta see The Girl with All the Gifts, even if this genre seems engineered specifically to terrify specifically me. Great vid, Jenna!

Global Warming has been proven that it is fake. Bigger and faster temperature rises happened before humans even existed. So many idiots.
reply

This isn-t a new thing. This has been happening since the Industrial Revolution. Look at some of the work by Algernon Blackwood.

I love this series so much, Jenna! Can't wait for more. Also, the green makeup was an excellent choice, it looks so rad. -
