One series cast a shadow over the last decade of gaming. It was a series that was defined not only by its traits, but by the ways in which it defied the decade's trends. That's right, we're talking about Dark Souls, and you can't stop us

For my (90's) generation, Souls was sort of -a rite of transition from child to adult- to both gamers and industry. We already were all grown ups in 2009, and yet we were still playing very patronizing and condescending games. It just wouldn't coalesce with reality anymore. Miyazaki, purposedly or not, opted for a new perspective: instead of games being a runnaway from reality, how about we talk about reality and adulthood? Yes, adulthood is dificult, you go in completely clueless, and will, without a second thought, beat you down to the ground. But, as long as you can get yourself up, and find your own solution to the boss/problem, you will magnificently triumph. As in life and as in the game, so long that you endure, you can accomplish anything you put your mind on, and that's trully beaultiful. Souls lets you see your mistakes, see that you can do mistakes, everybody does. In a generation that was obcessed with perfect, god-like, self-made mans, being able to succeeed by struggling sends a powerful message, and if you are there to listen, the game is there to tell you.

I didn-t have data on my phone back then but I had this video downloaded and would put it on for background noise while playing DS for the first time. Went on to beat the trilogy + Bloodbourne & Sekiro with my cousin during the pandemic. Wild how fast time can go by, lived with him since I was 15 and would always smoke weed and play games. It was a special time in my life when we discovered DS, I was going through some personal issues but I found some peace while going through this series with him. A few years later, we don-t talk and I don-t own a single souls game. Great video though, I like coming back to it from time to time.

i thought a thing missed was the in game exlanation as to the experience of a typical video game. Manyly i talk of death. You die in most games, oh shit. I gotta rewatch a cut scene, or my dude just rewinds back to just before i died, or this is a multiplayer game you are playing a game. Dark souls tho, is like, oh you died, you are undead and will return to the bonfire your undead disease is attatched to but you lose your currency which is used to break this undead curse. or like sekiro where you use time travel and eventually break the world, or bloodbourne like its a dream or whatever.

-Or coming up with something new, starting with. Controls. -
I can tell you, as someone who remembers the days of Armored Core when the shoulder buttons were used for aiming, and the euphoric transition in Armored Core Nexus to finally using dual stick aim/movement inputs with shoulder button attacks, that this was in no way a Souls innovation. FROM had a long and tortured relationship with godawful controls before settling on, -oh yeah I guess FPS games are on to something. -

In my opinion the best most innovative feature of the souls series are the phantom mechanic, more specifically the invasions.
While this feature requires alot of work to feel less of a gimmik ( mainly balancing and quality of life changes ), it is still the most innovative feature i've ever seen in a game, and i really hope more single player games will adopt it.

dark souls player here, you misconstrued the phrase, -git gud- it's not to troll but it's to say you must learn to be better and master the mechanics or at least memorize an aspect of a fight. you have to -git gud. - now yes there are those who use it to troll but we don't talk about those guys. I know I'm a year late but gotta let people know the truth.

Hey, Patrick!
I saw someone talking about Dark Souls. Well, it was this guy named Miyazaki who wanted to make a Souls-Like called Elden Ring.
I sent him a link to this video. Don-t worry. Elden Ring is now cancelled. The decade of Dark Souls remains over.
You are welcome: )

Dude, the souls community is the warmest, most helpful, and most welcoming community in gaming. We all share the same struggle so when we hit a wall, we all help. We're hostile to people who give up without trying, or dismiss them out of hand.
You should know this.

This has been my favorite polygon video for years. I rewatch pat talking about dark souls at least once a week. I've never played a souls game and don't plan to, and I guess that just goes to pat & the production team's credit. This is a Really Good Video.

Dark Souls taught me that, whenever a true problem arose, so would a powerleveled nude sadist man who would either kill a giant demon and point downwards while fading away or teleport in circles before backstabbing me with a max level lightning claymore.

Wait so dark souls and cats the musical are kinda similar in the way that theres plot but its possible to just enjoy the surface stuff, with dark souls doing the atmosphere and combat thing and cats doing the singing and dancing spectacle thing

I keep coming back to this video. It's really well made and Pat's measured and calm delivery makes for some great comedy. This and the 'bloodborne is muppets' one are some of my favourite Polygon videos. Thanks for your hard work people!

Naming genres of games after certain video games goes as far back as 1980, when Rogue came out. It was a dungeon crawler with randomly generated maps and permadeath, which would kickstart the popularity of roguelike games.

I remember having a conversation with someone and I told him there was this one game I stopped playing cus I just couldn-t beat it his response was -hmm that sounds alot like Dark Souls-

'Sometimes things that are meant to counter the mainstream can be welcomed into the mainstream'. Pat, I'm glad to see you've. recuperated nicely during any recent work holidays

I treasure this video so much still that it will be vaguely alluded to in extremely esoteric flavor text when I am slain in the fantasy apocalypse and someone loots my corpse.

i have watched a LOT of dark souls videos, as i'm sure pat has. (and frankly i know pat has. this is the best summary of why dark souls is good (or bad) i have ever seen

-Now that we're passed the Dark Souls of decades-
Looks at the date it was posted.
My sweet summer child was about to face the first of many 2 week lockdowns.

-For the last time, sir down and listen to a man talk about dark souls. for entirely too long. -
VaatiVidya would like you to hold his flask.

-we never have to talk about dark souls again-
-elden ring on its way to backstab this video and proceed to parry and riposte until it wins-

-Dark Souls replaced the GPS system with another system - the one when you go the wrong way, you get killed by 100 skeletons- - kudos sir

Oops. Sorry I just started playing Darksouls for the first time a few weeks ago. I shall promptly uninstall, thanks for the tips.

Red dead had boss mission essentially. You take everything you-ve learned in the chapter and fight through a tough part.
reply

just loaded this up bc i remembered the one hundred skeletons joke while playing minecraft and started choking and crying
reply

I like to imagine Pat just sneaking into the studio without anyone noticing, and recording this video all by himself.
reply

The last minute of this video remains as powerful as the opening to pats top 5 games for people who will eventually die
reply

i don't know why but pat climbing the ladder only to reveal that he is already taller than said ladder is peak humor to me
reply

Came back here after beating the glory that is Elden Ring just so I can smile and talk about dark souls more.
reply

Has anyone ever linked this to his own dark souls videos after this one? Cause if not that is a huge missed opportunity
reply

From time to time, I come back to this video. It's a masterpiece. I could say easily it's Pat's best video.
