As a little kid, I actually saw Return to OZ first before seeing Wizard of Oz. I had no concept the first movie. When I finally got around to seeing Wizard of Oz, I was so shocked because it was such a different type of old timey movie (how I thought of it back then.
Dark Crystal is such a masterpiece. I was kind of shocked to learn years later that it didn't do so well initially at the box office. Not only are the Skeksis delightfully terrifying, but the good characters are also pretty creepy too. The Gartham beetle-like creatures that work for the Skeksis were the most scary to me back in the day. With their legs and pincher arms and clickity claw sound effects.

Neither of them scared me but what about the rhino instead of the aunts? the aunts are Abusive while the rhino seems more scary yep none of the witches look quite as scary as the grand high witch I know audiences say the original more scary but her smile in the remake is a bit creepy the cast for the wheelers had to move around like that without any special effects I heard if they made it today they would use CGI I can see why The beldam is number 1 and oh yeah a happy family right how are some of these things for kids? shouldnt Judge doom be an honorable mention he freaked a few kids out

The Dark Crystal was not a creation of Jim Henson and Frank Oz; Henson asked Oz to help direct after the fact. Henson had connected with Brian Froud, an English artist known for drawing fantasy creatures like trolls and fairies, during the late '70s. Jim admired Froud's work and approached him about bringing them to life in a movie. They worked on the design, look, and technology for the film for three years before a script was completed.

One villain I would like to mention is the Sharptooth and heres why, hes capable of surviving falls no other creature can survive, hes capable of smashing through rocks with his head, hes capable of jumping high enough to land on a full grown apatosauruss back, hes smart enough to hold a grudge, and if all that isnt enough for you, just make sure that he can take on a fully grown apatosaurus by himself. dont underestimate cartoons.

Return to Oz should be number one, since it had many scary villains, not just the Wheelers but also the Gnome King and the Witch! Dark Crystal should be higher since the villains are scary. The 1980s had the most scariest kids movies, Dark Crystal, Return to Oz, Black Cauldron, Labyrinth, even Brave Little Toaster!

I first saw Coraline as an adult and I still felt a chill with the rather unsettling nature of the Beldam. From so friendly that it is creepy all the way until you witness its true form. That is why you don't enter magical doors, kids.

The wicked witch of the west will always be the scariest for me. I remember watching The Wizard of Oz as a child and had nightmares for days, especially from her standing on the roof and throwing fire at the scarecrow!

Everyone always talks about The Wheelers in Return to Oz, but more terrifying to me as a child was the witch who collected heads. That hall of heads and then her running around headless? I didn't sleep for a week!

Not gonna lie, with all the Roald Dahl representation I really thought the Trunchbull from Matilda would make it on this list! At least an HM, she was the fuel for some actual nightmares for me in grade school

Uncle Monty should have been on this list from A Series Of Unfortunate Events since he's literally trying to kill his nieces and nephews. Also Cruella just for the way she treats those poor puppies.

I would have put Gmork at number 1. He may have served the Nothing, but he remains the king of my nightmares.
And I would not have put the Wheelers on here at all. Those guys were pathetic.

The Wheelers are still so horrifying! Even though all you have to do is take a few steps into grass or just push them over. Yet here I am now in my 40s and still completely terrified of them!

I hate clowns and I think it's a combination of the firefighter one from the Brave Little Toaster and Tim Currys version of Pennywise.
And also those Wheelers gave me nightmares

The Dark Crystal is one of my most favorite films. Of course its generally because of Henson and their puppets but I'm sure it certainly helped by love of horror films.

What's more horrific about Quirrell-Voldemort is that unlike Ralph Fienne's look it's book-accurate! Voldemort always looks like that in the books!

Then I saw the first honorable mention, I was mad. Only an honorable mention for the Mistress of All Evil? Rude.
Then I saw the number one entry.

As a child, nothing scared me more than Monstro the whale in Pinocchio. That scene where he opens his mouth still sends shivers down my spine.
