My First Digital Camera 24 Years Later! Intel PC Pocket Cam

Revisiting this CS-630 from the year 2000! The Intel Pocket PC Camera is a glorified webcam with batteries when it comes down to it. But that simplicity made it an ideal introduction into shooting digital for 14-year-old me back in the day! So join me as I unbox a new one and revisit this toylike camera for the first time over two decades.

August 2000 That would be about the time I was in the US for the 1st and only time as of now for a few weeks. Of course back then I didn't bring anything more than one of those cute little disposable Kodaks so common in the 90s and such before everyone had their dumb phones most slowly forgetting about things before.
That said, as it has always been, whatever the newest tech is it is almost certainly horribly overrated, regarded and marketed far beyond anything it can or will ever be capable of, but I digress.
Still got the pictures I took after they were developed like everyone was used to doing back then. Couple of nice ones taken in New Mexico, the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest spent most of the time driving though.
Is it sad my strongest memories of the US remain, among other things, the state of the roads including the amount of roadkill of odd animals to me such as armadillo along with the desolation in general of the sweeping seemingly endless vistas along the way especially Oklohoma I don't think I've ever seen anything so very flat since.
Good times.

I remember my first PC gifted to me by my father; was a Gateway Performance 1300 (Pentium 4 1. 3ghz system) and it also included this Intel camera. Was fascinating just to have any digital camera at all; sending a picture via email over dial up as opposed to using snail mail or meeting up was certainly different and I didn't mind the experience. The included editing software while not placing me on a career path involving photo editing gave me valuable experience nonetheless. Thank you for covering this piece of history LGR.

20: 23 Eckerd was where we got all our rolls of film developed back in the 90s. It was the CVS of the early and mid 90s, at least here in Florida. They were _everywhere. _ And they had the little one hour photo stand where you stick your roll of film into an envelope, fill it out, drop it through the slot. Come back an hour later and your photos would be ready.
And wow. My mom had an all grey Ford Aerostar, also. She had a No Fear decal on the back window. Remember _that_ brand lol. Yeah, nice trip down 90s memory lane.

Oh my god! This was my first digital camera too! Kind of a piece of junk, but it's still nostalgic for me. I think I still have it somewhere! I also can't help but remember how much of a nightmare the software and drivers were on Windows 2000, which is what we had back in the day. So some of these features I've never seen before! The games worked fine, and we could pull images from the camera and use it as a webcam, but the rest of the software refused to function.

Clint you could have made this video 4 hours and I would watch it. Teared up a bit when you showed your early 2k pics, not sure why just miss those days so much, when America was America I guess. Besides 911 1994-2004 were prob my favorite 10 years. Clint you should like Daves Archives ask people to send you old digital photos of the time and just review if they have nostalgic tech related photos from the time. I would watch every second of that. -Cheers, Andy

it was mine also, i still have the pics that i took with it.
weird funny trivia: i was driving in my car one time and found a guy carrying one, i took a pic of him with my camera while he was taking mine. until today i wonder where that pic is, it would look so cool if u could post the 2 pics side by side and edit it as one pic. it was pretty rare back then to find a random guy on the street carrying one.
Btw, it was a good camera, i loved it a lot.

I do like the whole 'retrospective' part of the video Clint! It's always nice just to look at old photos and go Wow. how things where/how things have become espically for photos with vivid memories. Espically owning a camera which you had 24 years ago. Make me want to seek out some old cameras now (well OK I had more or less cell phones with cameras, never really bought dedicated camera until 2017) and just have a play.

Back in this era of digital cameras I was working as a marketing manager for a real estate company, meaning I handled their print, online, and mail marketing. Agents were always some of the earliest adopters of digital photography, for the obvious reasons. This video brings back nightmares of importing 320p LQ, out of focus photos from agents who wanted to use it for half-page spreads in tomorrow's local paper.

I love the pictures this camera takes! reminds me of my Nintendo DSi's camera. That was my first digital camera and I adored it! Were the pictures good eh most people would say no, but I still love them anyway. I have so many memories with it and it's so much fun to look back at them. It was so freeing having my own camera as a kid. I still take it out sometimes and take random pictures with it: )

I have a large diecast model of that same car, and same racing stripes, that was gifted to me from about that era, and I still have it to this day on my bookshelf. It's pretty beat up, it has a missing tire, some tape holding the hood and smaller plastic bits together, etc. You might be able to see it in my last video on here, since I tried using that bookshelf as a backdrop.

You hit the nail on the head at the end there. We took all that footage and photos not to enjoy then, right after, but years in the future to look back on. And it doesn't matter that the quality is so crumby compared to today's hardware. In a way there hardware isn't the point- it's a real window on the past. A treasure of memories. And we're so glad we have it!
reply

Had a camera that did similar quality pictures to that.
It was actually a JVC DV camcorder, mind you, but had a compact flash card slot for taking photos, too, and as I said, the resulting photos were of the same quality, not just in resolution, but all the other qualities, too, like the poor representation of dark colours and overall sorta softness.

Checking out old stuff is always pretty cool, but playing with old stuff you actually owned back in the day, and getting to browse your old lo-res collection -- that's way cooler, still!
Great, now you've done it. I'm gonna have to go find my own, long lost lo-res pics -- damn you, LGR! [lol]

I was waiting for a new camera review for quite some time now. Perfect!
Btw (chances that you read this are pretty slim, but hey. I have a Pentax Optio S, to my knowledge at it's time the smallest digital camera available. Are you interested in this camera If so, how could I send it to you

I still have my first digital camera too! It's a Toshiba PDR-2 that came as a bundle when I bought my IBM 380XD back in the day. I still have the original 2MB SmartCard that came with it. I also have my 380XD too but it has decided to no longer turn on, it makes an attempt and then it goes dead.

You probably get this a lot. Your videos are soo good that makes me, and I belive all your audience, feel like we know you on a personal level. For years I watch and still can't get enough. Congrats in keeping it up for so long. This fan from Brazil is happy that you exist.

Such an aesthetic in both the photos taken and the videos from the software. Amazing. I think both now and then you have really good taste in photos to take on these old cameras. They play to their strengths - I particularly love the shop aisle with the window in the background

I am sure that Intel never talked to anyone in the advertising department of the various news sources and suggested that should they not run and article on their new camera lineup they may withdraw their adverts. Bet nothing like that is responsible for all those articles.

Talking early digital cameras and their associated software, does anyone remember Lego Mindstorms Vision Command The webcam that you could attach to Lego Technic and control with your computer All the Reality Fusion stuff really reminds me of it for some reason.

What were the circumstances around your online high school back in 2000 It seems like that sort of thing would NOT have been common back then. I think we're desensitized to the concept of online school nowadays, but I feel like even that is mostly due to. You know. 2020.
