First off, it's a bummer Life by You was canned because I was hoping it would tie into Cities Skylines 2 a bit. Hopefully they can get their stuff in order and try again because more competition in this space is better.
But honestly the biggest hurdle for Sims 4 has always been 3. The previous game was always a fairly major upgrade, 3 may have lost some of the detail of 2 like the using counter drawers but it made up for that by just the shear amount of gameplay by having the whole world at your fingertips. 4 definitely had some improvements over 3, from just basic modernization stuff like controls and behaving better on modern systems to the multitasking not breaking some other interaction because somebody wanted to wave at your Sim.
But those improvements did not make up for the giving away that open world. Honestly if 4 was 3 even adjusting it back a bit then it would have been the greatest one yet (probably) but 4 has always had that stank on it and it made the other flaws stick out. I could just not get into 4, it plays more like 2 focusing around a single lot but wants to play like 3 having your sims go places and do things.
The thing that killed it for good is when I tried to play it when it went free to play (or when ever I found a good way to play for free) I tried a typical start from collage. I had everything set up to make the busy schedule work but after the second class my one sim got hungry so I sent to the student union to grab lunch from a vending machine outside. I was then hit with a loading screen and everything just hard stopped and started over on this new lot. So not only did I have a loading screen to get to something I could see from the other lot I had the queue cancelled there was the usual farting around that kills 15 minutes and then another loading screen to get back and the same farting around lost time on the other lot. so instead of fitting lunch into that short time like would have been easily done in 3 that sim eat half of it, got pissed they were late for class and then missed half of that farting about between lots.
The gameplay is just such a pain in the ass, you either have to limit yourself to classic single lot gameplay or constantly be interrupted breaking the flow and giving you time to realize you're playing a awful game. It would have an excuse if it ran well, but it still has so many bugs, you might as well just run through a guide to make Sims 3 work better on modern systems and have basically the same level of bugs and a more fun game overall.
If the base game was good then just upgrading it would be a great idea to keep your content, but the base game has too many flaws, people want a new game to address them. Cities Skylines 2 is a good example. The first game is great, still is, but people were easily reaching the limits of what it could do. CS2 had an awful launch but people still want it to work out because the benefits of this new base are well worth it and can't just be upgraded into the first game. Now maybe they plan to go really in depth with upgrades to address those key issues in 4 and let you keep you existing content, but I think it's more likely that I'll win the lottery and make a studio to make my own version that they would and it actually work.

Of course I have insane nostalgia for TS2 but nothing beats TS3, in my opinion. I pick it back up every now again and just spend hours making entire towns, communities, and storylines from scratch. Optimization issues aside (especially as there are some excellent mods out there that tackle those concerns, TS3 did an incredible job of giving you the foundational tools needed to create a world that truly felt alive.
It's funny, I can still remember being a kid and hearing they were releasing TS4, watching a few video reviews, and just being utterly disappointed by all the features they were taking away. To be so uninventive and revert back to limited color swatches instead of the style tool, to trap sims to one (or 'neighborhood' lol) and bring back loading screens, to rely so heavily on rabbitholes when the only reason they worked in TS3 was because the world was so massive and expansive. I'm telling you, even as a child I just didn't understand it lol.
I'll grant that the building tools are very user-friendly in TS4 and the create a sim drag-and-pull definitely allows for more creativity in crafting a character, but besides that. TS4 has never held any appeal for me. I think I caved and got it when it was down to 5$ (before they made it free, lol I should have just waited) and played for 40 minutes before getting bored and switching back to TS3.
In a better timeline, EA would have expanded on everything the TS3 brought to the table and then some. Throw in some old-school animation love that TS2 had and keep the upgraded building/CAS of TS4 and you would really have something great. At this point I'm just praying that more people begin to reject TS4 and come back to TS3 (or try it for the first time if they haven't) - more modders would be great lol (I'm so tired of looking for unique CC, finding it, and seeing it's only for TS4 even when I specifically typed in TS3.

All I can say is that I'm happy I didn't get into Sims 4 and all my memories of The Sims are positive, happy memories. I'm fine with Sims 5 being gone because it would have ended up being yet another cash grab, just like Sims 4 is. And Sims 4, the game that was said that it was not built on stable enough code to handle all these packs, will continue to keep running and getting packs. EA is sticking to it's brand of ruining games. I will continue to play Sims 2 and 3 because they are still Sims games, to me. Sims 4 is like a distant cousin, sort of.
BUT I also have to put some blame on the Sims community. People constantly kept telling them to stop buying these packs no matter what, because all it would do is inspire EA to continue putting out broken and glitchy games. Then came KITS and that was yet another bad seed because it was put in just to see if simmers would pay money for small packs of stuff to add to the game, you know, kind of like microtransactions. I feel bad Sims has to end this way, a slow, painful death, but it needed to happen because Sims 4 is just a money bag at this point. There's no fun and love really in it, anymore, it's just about how much money they can squeeze out of players and players seem happy to continue throwing money at it, so yeah, why would EA risk losing players who have already spent the most out of any previous entry on this game As many simmers, especially OG simmers like myself, may be sad to see the franchise ending, we have to be real, it was NOT going to a good place. The game was not going to get better or return to it's former glory. We need to move on. Sims 4 will keep going for the next 10 years if simmers don't stop throwing money at it, so idk what else to say. I'm looking forward to Paralives and inZOI and whatever other life sims spring up in the future. Sims ended with Sims 3, for me.

It seems like the biggest thing is just the open-world aspect, isn't it Sims 4 is already a very optimized engine, that can run on the weakest of potatos, even with a bunch of expansions, whereas the Sims 3 starts to chug on weaker hardware the second you add more than one or two expansions at a time. At least, that was my experience between the two games; it wasn't until I got a beefy modern PC that I could run Sims 3 with all expansions, and even then, it didn't always run smoothly. Sims 4 is smooth as butter, no matter how many expansions you throw at it, and even with mods on top of it all.
If the cost of this optimization was losing the open-world mechanics of TS3. I can't say I'm too bothered by it. I don't exactly think it would be great to start from scratch again, when the current engine works so well already. You even showed the Cities Skylines 2 comparison, which is very poignant in this discussion. It's a much heavier engine that looks better, but runs much worse, and loses access to a ton of features that were present in previous expansions. A hypothetical TS5 will just be going back to base TS4 again, which would be awful.

Now, this is something I didn't know. I didn't know they were going to have content creators come on and make buyable mods. I've been against that for a long time, when people would suggest EA hire modders, and exactly for the reasons you mentioned. Like, it's making me think even LESS of EA and I didn't think that was possible. Like, Modders are literally making your game playable for many people. It's great they're being hired, but why are you not inspired to truly fix your own game and start over There are so many SIMPLE things simmers want and, now, it seems like they definitely won't be getting those things. They MIGHT get cars and, yes, I know we had cars in a closed world in Sims 2, but it'll feel strange to be in a Sims 4 world with Sims 2 limitations, you know I don't know. Good on those who will continue with Sims 4, but it's just run it's course, unfortunately. Newer players, especially those who never played the first 3 games will be fine, they don't know what they don't know, but for older players, I can't imagine them being all that thrilled about playing a NEW game with OLD limits.

Hot take that will make many people mad, but if you played sims 1&2 when they were released, you're probably just too old for the new sims games. Some grumpy adults wonder why they can't enjoy sims 4 as an adult as much as they enjoyed sims 2 as a kid. Can't imagine why! Older Sims games have a crapload of issues if you look at them without rose-tinted glasses. People call TS4 a buggy mess when TS3 literally needs mods to be playable. It was news to me that people hate the emotion system, like do you really prefer when a sim literally has two moods My first sims game was TS3 and that mood system made no sense even then when I didn't know about the possibilities of TS4. This and so many other disappointing things that ruin the immersion more than loading screens and lack of cars. And I'm not disregarding TS3 completely it does have some advantages and it's indeed better for some scenarios than TS4. What I'm saying that most people in this comment section are a bit too dramatic and are certainly blinded by nostalgia.

I like you Clint. I have been a very big Sims and SimsCity fan, I have played most of the expansions from Sims 1 - 4 and all the base games. However, I would have to disagree in one way. I think the heart and soul went out of the franchise well before The Sims 4 releases. I saw the affects of endless and over priced DLC expansions and Stuff packs, all the way back when The Sims 3 launched, shore it had better and flasher graphic and possible a more stable and fuctional game engine (at least for me. But I saw the repeact and what I called it the release of old expantions with a new lick of piant and more effects. That is when I stopped buying DLC expansions and Stuff packs. Because I felt if I wanted to experance that content then I could go back to The Sims 3 or possibly The Sims 2 games. I think the cow has been truely milked on Sims and it's franchies. I honestly think they need to bring back Will Wright at EA, to bring back more enthusasium and artistic flare back to the franchise and especially to the SimCity franchise.

I think that you should ultimately do what makes you happy. I love your sims content because it helps me figure out what expansion I want to buy for my birthday when several are released a year. But, also if thinking about, and talking about, the sims 4 is making you burnt out and sad then personally I would be more than happy to say goodbye to individual reviews of sims 4 expansions. You’re not just a content creator, you’re also a person. Asking you to keep doing something that sucks the life out of you will never sit right. Of course I understand that this is your job and I wish you all the best with whatever content you decide to create. Ultimately what I personally value about your content and your work is your knowledge of what makes a game good for the user experience, the way your reviews are broken down into easily digestible and understood categories, your thoughtful critiques and your humour. Those things are not just found in your sims 4 reviews so I’ll personally keep watching either way.

If they were keeping and expanding on the sims 3 I would be way more excited. It had such a great base but needed a ton of refinement and performance improvements. But to build on open worlds, in-game swatch / furniture creation, being able to place lots where ever in the world and create new worlds - the players would have the freedom to keep it fresh themselves, more similar to sandbox games like minecraft.
But with sims 4 there's simply no way to convert it to open worlds, no way to create worlds, no feelings of consequence for personalities or choices, easiest economy so my sim can go from starting money to upgraded everything in one generation, no in-game swatch creator (I suspect this is what Project Rene is trying to do but will be on an annoying mobile platform - annoying to me that is) so like yeah I don't really want to just have endless expansions for the sims 4 because the base is just completely closes the door on addressing any of these problems regardless of the amount of DLC they create

I wouldn't even pirate The Sims 4.
Edit: LGR, I just had a thought. If you could pin what I'm about to say, that'd be awesome.
For those super excited for Paralives, me too. BUT, please do not get let your expectations run wild. Paralives is likely going to be fairly bare bones during it's initial release, with it being expanded upon as time goes on. This game WILL NOT have as much content as the Sims 2, 3, or 4, which not only had a whole dedicated team and company behind it, but also more time.
Paralives will likely have more content than the Sims 4 when it first came out (which isn't hard to do, but it will not be as expansive as the Sims 2 and 3 of today. PLEASE give the indie team grace. PLEASE do not treat this game like it is a AAA title. PLEASE do not hop on the hype train and then get ticked off with the Paralives people when it doesn't stop at your station.
We all want the next Sims 2/3, but that will never happen if we scare off anyone from trying.

I will leave things at 2 and 3 being the best ever, 1 being most nostalgic and a perfect way to show a young computer enthusiast the 90s/2000s games culture, but 4 fell on its face FLAT. The DLC thing didn’t bother me with the other 2.
3 for instance had less storage space, more colour options, you could OWN A VEHICLE STILL, as well as it had the hilarious bits still there if you wanted to be horrible! The Sims 4 feels too slow, tame campy humor, and it has almost a dystopian feel compared to the others!
In 2015 my high school had a saying

It’s a play off Activision to describe the action of upping graphics so hard core but paying no attention to engine, balance, or mechanics that your game becomes a pretty piece of corporate bore. Sims 4 absolutely suffered this, and it’s all I think of when I play it.

One possibility could be to do a double in-depth review of the two Expansions at the end of the year, so it's all in one big unpleasant Sims 4 gulp instead of doing it twice.
Or maybe remove just a tad of that depth and dedicate some time at the end of an Expansion review to new Sims updates that genuinely excite you, like possible release date announcements for the indie Sims stuff or new mods or new fan stuff on the same vein as that Sims 1 port to FreeSO.
I dunno, I'm just spitballing. I do tend to watch your new Sims 4 stuff, but that's mostly because its you covering it, LGR. Since I'm not a Sims fan, I'm not really sure what a good possible solution would be besides just burning EA's building down (with no one inside, of course.

I remember back during the beginning, there was news that touted that If The Sims 4 wasn't successful, there would be no Sims 5! Go figure, The Sims 4 becomes successful financially and then they decide to cancel The Sims 5 anyway in favor of a coded mess that is The Sims 4 forever! I seriously don't get EA's desire to make a single player life sim game, multiplayers. Shows that they value the mobile, free2play, MMO crowd more than the demographic that The Sims actually caters towards.
Anyone with dignity wouldn't put anymore stock into EA imo! That's fine because I will support other life sim developers and I hope more competition emerges to get a piece of the pie.

Anyone with dignity wouldn't put anymore stock into EA imo! That's fine because I will support other life sim developers and I hope more competition emerges to get a piece of the pie.

To be honest I’m somewhat relieved with the news. I’ve made so many mods for TS4 that I was afraid all of that work and time would go to waste after everyone moved on and I’d have to relearn the process and wait for all these community-made tools to be developed all over again.
I already knew there wasn’t going to be a TS5 because I was invited to an EA secret playtest last year for the next thing they were developing for the franchise. Without revealing too much info I gave poor feedbackit sucked. That probably jeopardised my future playtesting for EA

It really feels like they're not even trying anymore. Even the Expansion Packs are bare bones now so they can charge us for game packs, stuff packs and kits. The problem is it gets to a point where everything is so washed that nothing is exciting enough to pay for and try anymore.
I find myself only buying stuff so it's not missing when I upload all the awesome creator content that's out there. It's always jarring when a Sim you uploaded is bald or in their underwear because you don't have the pack associated with it.

I would love to see a coder's or developer's opinion on EA's plan to update and modernize the sims 4 base game. Curious to see if what they are proposing is even possible, after all these years and the amount of DLC it would have to be compatible with. Not to mention that everytime we get a new delivery express or update, the game bugs out and crashes for so many paeople. I can't imagine the damage this is going to do to legacy players (or anyone with a save game, honestly)

if you want to support INZOI, just keep in mind that they are openly admitting to using GenAI for their project (its on their steam) and require you to have a Krafton account who has been known to sell a lot of their f2p user data to other companies, so you have no guarantee that this won't happen when you make an account for a paid game, or try the demo for yourself. Not telling you not to, just wanna let folks know that this is the state of things when it comes to that,

i feel like ea realised they couldnt compete with inzoi or paralives so they decided to put project rene/sims 5 back in the oven to work on getting it up to scratch with them which resulted then in needing to back peddle and continue updating sims 4.
my hope for the next game, if theyre soo concerned about players starting over, is maybe adding the ability to upload family from sims 4 into the game. would be a first for the series and quite the selling point

y'all are forgetting mojang rewrote Java Minecraft in cc because the original Minecraft code was such hell to work with, and then they kept updating both versions. if EA and maxis actually commit to fixing the code for the sims 4 they can actually do it. the problem is if they are willing to actually do that and not just keep craming expansions into it. I truly believe they can fix the sims 4 I just don't know if I can believe they will commit to it

Sims 1 was ground breaking and awesome, Sims 2 kicked it up several notches and was awesome, sims 3 and it's story progression combined openworld was revolutionary for game play (I got a legacy family 15 generations in and still going, Sims 4. It became a huge money grab with a few too many step backs, esp. the closed world. Always felt that a Sims 5 was going to be an evolution of Sims 4 in terms of money grabbing expansions, stuff packs, etc.
