Listening to a piece of music and describing its characteristics and features, what can you hear? Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 8 practical exams. This video is packed with ideas for candidates who are responding to the final grade 8 aural test. In this test the examiner plays a piece of music and invites the candidate to offer objective analytical observations. Many grade 8 candidates are unsure about how to respond to this aural test, particularly as they are free to make any observations they wish. Others respond by using rather subjective language or by offering answers that lack depth. In this video you will learn how to work through a check list of headings that will enable you to make good quality analytical observations about melody, rhythm, harmony and tonality, texture, structure, character, style and period, and other issues it might be helpful to explore. Beyond the exam, this video will empower you to examine the music you are playing, writing, or listening to in a more analytical, objective way, thereby empowering decisions concerning interpretation or composing. Have been going over this with my son. We often like to make up memory devices for categorical subjects, for example, this might help you cover the points/areas needed to explain the period ('the evidence' as the instructor here mentioned):
-STARTeD-
S= Structure
T= Texture
A= Articulation
R = Rhythm
T = Tonality
e
D = Dynamics
Arm yourself with terminology which you can use to explain each of the concepts as well, for example make sure you know and can properly use terms like 'cadence' (relates mainly to Tonality I guess), 'monophonic/polyphonic' (under Structure); etc.
On a final note - give thanks to God for music and ask for His blessing...

When I was playing guess the composer, I would have said the first is Hindemith, second is Handel, and the third late Beethoven . I was surprised, as the third doesn't scream out late romantic at all to me. It sounds like it could be a 2nd -joining- movement to clean the atmosphere between a substantial 1st and 3rd movement, e.g. like the second movement of the Waldstein piano sonata. The very first four chords sound very similar to those used in the theme of Beethoven's grosse fugue!

Thanks for your informative series of videos! On the grade 8 test where you are asked to comment on a piece, is there any option to write written notes as the piece is played? It would be good to be able to have a few reminders available when the piece is finished.

Thank you so much for making so many helpful videos! I've just found out that I've passed my grade 8 violin exam with distinction and I think you're doing an amazing job of teaching people from all over the world (I live over in New Zealand)

I soo glad I found you, aural is the scariest part of the exam for me. I passed all my 7 grades with distinctions with exeption of 7 being a pass! Grade 8 I intend to aim for distinction and a challange to be self taught. thanks fro this!

even though i'm in grade 7, this really helped me because a lot of these things apply to grade 7. i just realised you're an ABRSM examiner- i really hope you examine my exam because you seem so nice :)))

Having my grade 8 piano exam in less than three days, I got no confidence in either scales or pieces, so hopefully it will went well in aural test. This video was so helpful, thank you so much!

Is there a grade 6 aural video, I wanna start doing grade 6 aural but I don-t understand all this stuff
My teacher just expects me to hear and understand the chords. But how?

reply

Although I understood little of the more complex topics, it's such a pleasure to watch and listen to someone who is an expert in their field. And I learned a great deal, thank you.
