Describing a modulation within a short piece of music. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 7 practical exams. One of the aural tests for grade 7 involves being able to identify a modulation to the relative key, the dominant, or the subdominant. Many people find it impossible to hear a modulation - a change from one key to another - but this video shows you a fantastic method that will give you the correct answer every time! For grade 7, there are three options - a modulation to the relative key, to the dominant key, or to the subdominant key. Learning how to recognise changes of tonality between major and minor is followed by learning how to sing the original tonic throughout the piece in order to determine whether or not it fits the final chord - if it does, a modulation to the subdominant is confirmed; if it doesn-t, a modulation to the dominant has occurred. It-s a fantastic technique and you-ll be so glad to learn it. Beyond the exam, this opens up an understanding of modulation, the options, and the impact on the music we interpret as performers, listeners, and composers. to grade 7 aural tests 1:24 - How does this test work? 2:58 - Advice on identifying modulations 13:44 - Practice tests - Grade 7 Aural Tests Course When it comes to music exams, candidates often prepare themselves well for the playing but are less sure when it comes to the Aural Tests. Thank you so much for explaining modulation. I am studying for my ABRSM grade 7 guitar and my brain just could not cope with learning modulation, however, you have shown a really simple way to understand and this and has helped me enormously. Thank you so much

Modulation does my head in. I can't find a clear explanation as to why you would change the key. Why not just stay in C major/A minor? I can hear a clear difference between major and minor, but not from C major to F major or G major.
