I'm not a fan of how the opening video in this series claims people only act when they believe the benefits outweigh the cost. I doubt that's true.
There is arguably such a think as akrasia, where we act in such a way that we don't believe the benefits outweigh the cost. I appear to do this every day, which is one reason why I hate myself and feel bad most of the time.
Some people deny the existence of akrasia-- for instance, by claiming we -subconsciously- believe what we're doing is best, even if we consciously believe what we're doing isn't best. Well, maybe. But that's a highly contentious claim about psychology and subconscious motivations, not an established fact.
Of course, as economists, you can use simplified models that remove akrasia from the equation. That may be totally fine, depending on the nature and purpose of the model. But that doesn't mean akrasia doesn't exist in real life.
