In the world of passenger trains, fully matching rail equipment is quite eye catching. When the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner began operations in June of 2000 in Southern California, the equipment was almost always fully matched 5 car train sets of bi-level -Surfliner- cars pulled by a Surfliner painted F59PHI locomotive. Over the years, the service has become increasingly popular with ridership growing to about 4 million annual passengers in 2019. Because of this, all train sets have been lengthened to 6 and sometimes even 7 cars and more trains have been added to the schedule, requiring additional sets of equipment. In order to meet regular daily car requirements and fill the gap until additional Surfliner equipment can be sourced, Bilevel Amtrak -Superliner- cars have been added to most train sets. Some of these cars have even been painted into the Surfliner scheme, but most of them display standard Amtrak striping. These days, it is not that often that completely matched Surfliner sets can be seen, but it does happen from time to time. In this video, we-ll take a look at some matched Surfliner sets in service as well as some that have Superliner cars painted into the Surfliner blue scheme

Man
how i miss the F59PHIs- When visiting family across all of California, it was always the Surfliner. I-d sometimes get typical P42DCs, but it-s the F59 that-s iconic to the route

Artistically, it looks nicer if the trains are a matched set, but if it means either cancel a train or put together unmatched train cars, the choice is easy: Do what you got to do.

I think repainted superliner cars for surfliner service should be referred to as turfliners as they go well with the surf but are from a place more inland.

We enjoy riding the Surfliner for day trips. Is economy seating just as good as business class? We always wind up paying the extra for business.

I remember back when Amtrak had the F40PH. That was my favourite locomotive. I have it in HO on my layout. I wonder how many Cabbage cars are left.

Hey CoasterFan2105 I am planning on making a video about EX Amtrak F40PHR unit 369. Do you have any ideas on how I should do it?

Amazing! I bet that it-s even more rare to see a fully matched Surfliner with two SC-44 charger locomotives instead of a cab car
