The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a tourist line in Southwestern Colorado. First constructed in 1881 to haul passengers and freight traffic related to silver mining activities in the mountains north of Silverton, tourism has been the main business for the railroad for well over half a century. In 2019, the railroad announced the acquisition of four narrow gauge diesel locomotives from the White Pass and Yukon Route, another tourist line located in Skagway, Alaska. These are model number DL535 units built in 1969 by the Montreal Locomotive Works, which was the Canadian subsidiary of ALCO. Locomotives 101 and 107 were shipped by barge from Alaska to the port of Bellingham, Washington in the spring of 2020. From Bellingham, they were eventually shipped by truck the rest of the way to Durango, Colorado. Locomotives 103 and 106 were shipped during the Summer of 2021. Once in Durango, locomotive 107 received some work and was quickly pressed into service in late 2020 with the 101 entering in mid 2021 following a full repaint. Let-s visit the Durango and Silverton for a look at these first two unique and historic narrow gauge diesels in tourist service

Looking through some of the other comments here, I notice you said in a reply that you hope to one day go to the White Pass & Yukon. Might I recommend going to Tweetsie Railroad and Dollywood to get a look at what White Pass & Yukon steam is like, as a sort of preview taste?

I'm glad that they are still able to have the service there, but the diesels just don't have the same nostalgic feel. Looks, sound, and everything that is only with the steam engines. I don't want to give that up. Thank you for sharing this, I really appreciate your videos.

I can't believe you got a DVD company to work with you, with music made by James Coffey, the same guy who made music for I Love Toy Trains! It's awesome how far you have come, and you are a huge inspiration for me. Good job.

I got a question for you mike, do you actually go to all these places for these video? Also one comment: I hate how you aren-t getting as many views as before. You deserve more views!

101's repaint in orange and crimson is absolutely strong and vibrant. Hats off to the Durango & Silverton for giving my favorite 3' gauge diesels in the world a new home!

When I went to Durango and Silverton I only saw 2 diesel locos and all other steamers. I have been looking forward to seeing this one running! Amazing video my friend!

When I went on the Durango and Silverton i was able to see both of those locomotives in action and even was able to film in some of the same exact locations as you.

They purchased two additional White Pass locomotives, numbered 103 and 106, in May 2021. Surprised their 1200 series locomotives have not been put into service yet.

Waaaaay back in 1967, i got to ride behind the steam powered train, while its nice to have them for fire safety issues, they still put out smoke like the steamers!

It's interesting, yet not supprising that they still make narrow gauge locomotives, you dont ever consider narrow gauge as more than museum lines these days.
