Boy, I wanted to travel onboard the Giruno since its introduction in 2019, I finally got to do it. Is it worth all the hype I saw online? Well, let's find out - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN JUNE 2023 Railway company: SBB CFF FFS Train type: RABe 501 From: Zürich HB to Milano Centrale Time: 3h17 Price: 129- (I paid 13- for my interrail reservation)
Date: 2024-01-09

Ok it might be a good train but i think it is not the best high speed train in Europe. Here are 5 reasons why: it-s average speed is slower than some faster regional trains TER 200, IRE 200 a top speed of 250 kilometer per hour is to slow to be called high speed the only moment where it can reach this speed is on the Italian part of the route it has way to much of an acela feeling with it having to slow down for old and undersized infrastructure. The seats are to hard in second class but at least they are no longer all in bay-s of four TGV and ICE have better seats. The toilets are in bad places along the train some cars have to play the game of walking down 3 cars just to get to the toilets you showed an accessible toilet wich size is ok but the normal ones are to small about the size of the ones of the TGV douplex. The train feels like a waste of space it is very long but doesn-t take much passengers. It is very expensive for what you get if you go by car it is much cheaper. Very nice review thank you.

Are you a little biased on that train? I dont want to start a rant but:
- the screen you liked - i cant see shit on that, the next station + time takes 50% of the space, so the card isnt readable
- the layout of the train doesnt seem very efficient, so much free space ( thats why it is so full)
- the seats look like any generic first class seat
- fast connection? I mean impressive with the amount of tunnels but 250km in 3h++ is less than 100km/h in average. Pretty slow
. Non the less probably a good train but a little overhyped

5: 10 The train is good, but not the track. You write the distance is 250 km and the train takes a whopping 3 hours 17 minutes for it, and that's -impressive-? Seriously? That makes a lousy average speed of only 76 km/h despite the top speed of 250 km/h of the Giruno. There are only few sections for high speed in Switzerland. On the Gotthard route, it is currently only in the tunnel region (Gotthard and Ceneri. I assume that they still only run 200 km/h in the tunnels despite of their design speed of 250 km/h.

I have used it several times on the Milan-Genoa route. I must say that it-s a very quiet train, and 'soft' on the tracks. The interior is also often clean and the spaces well used. However, I don-t agree with the comfort of the seats: it-s true that they-re more comfortable than other seats on other trains, but I don-t think that anyone can ever beat the comfort of those on the ETR500.

Probably the best restaurant car in terms of service, seats and menu options on any non-luxury train currently in service. I wish more companies reintroduced real restaurant cars even if offering a relatively limited selection. No matter how fancy the meal, eating it at your seat on a fold-down table will never beat the feeling of doing so the more social environment of a restaurant car.

I'm swiss and I use trains in and around Zurich every day, and they are in general very good (compared to a lot of other places); but I gotta say, this highspeed train for the Gotthard route is really something else. It brings me from Zurich to Lugano - a very nice town at a lake in the italian-speaking part of Switzerland - in just 2 hours. and it's just so comfy!

Those meals from the dining car looks so nice. Considering that I'm from Canada and being more or less used to the eye-watering Canadian prices (taxes are NOT included and you have to pay them on top of the total, Swiss prices, judging from the menu you've shown, actually are quite reasonably priced in comparison, even with the exchange rate in mind.

The train is fast only between Lugano and Altdorf. Between Aldtorf and Zurich it takes for ever with average speed of 70 k m/h. And between Lugano and Milano it takes 1h30 minutes. I am not even sure it-s 100 km distance. On top of that, seats are really uncomfortable and the stretch in the Gottard tunnel is very loud. I have to wear ear plugs.

I like the innovations of this train regarding accessibility. One huge downside is that a good number of the seats lack a proper table for working with a laptop. Better pick the seat yourself if the reservation system allows it, which is not always the case.
In the Astoro / ETR610, IIRC, every seat has a decent fold-out table.

These Stadler low floor high speed train is amazing, I also enjoyed this route a lot. what a contrast when you compare the easy access of Zurich HB vs Milano Centrale. arriving in MIlano is like landing on a different planet comparing to when you boarded the 1st class Girono at Zurich HB.

A reccomendation:
Please blur general people's faces which comes in video. You should try blurring out other peoples faces like
Solo Solo Travel does in his video, it really makes the video better. Hope you find this helpful -

Thanks for sharing! I would like to ask how to buy train ticket in Zurich HB for the Zurich to Milano train? I was at the train station earlier, and found all the ticket machines are only selling train tickets within Switzerland.

14: 00 please do note, that EC trains used to stop there, in Monza, but this stop was cancelled on December 2022. The new -best practice- in Italy, is to cancel intermediate stops without changing travel times to -catch up delays-.

Anouncements are depending in which region of Switzerland you go.
So when you travel from Basel to Geneva, you get German, French and English.
To, for example, Lugano you get Italian instead of French. and so on

Amazing looking train and I picked up on the quietness of the ride almost as soon as the train began rolling -- that's almost unbelievable! SBB is my favourite, hands down, of all main line rail companies I've ever ridden with!
reply

It's alright, but is it even high speed? First time I took it after the Italian Freccia I felt like we were being pulled by horses. Bologna is the same distance from Milan than Zurich and it takes 1/3rd of the time.
reply

I don't know if you knew, but you can use the onboard wifi to see an overview of the train journey (location, speed, etc. I always found it annoying that the overview at 5: 25 is skipped for commercials or whatnot.

Hey there, we live in Switzerland and if we travel to Ticino, we take the Giruno for a fast and save voyage!
We are proud about the Gotthard base tunnel that was built faster than the new Airport in Berlin! -

reply

Best trains in the whole continent, hands down. The SBB is the best train system in the world, equally as good, clean, efficient, reliable and ALWAYS ON TIME as the Japanese Railways. Both are #1
reply

Giruno stems from the Rhaeto-Romanic 'girun' = buzzard. The Traverso is nicer, better, more spacy (five bicycle compartments instead of only one, although without dining-car (self-service instead.

Awesome trainset! My bucket list is to one day go to Europe to ride some of these trains. I guess I have to live vicariously thru Simply Railways for the time being. Thanks Thibault!
reply

Beautiful? Sure, if you like to travel for 3 hours in a dentist 's waiting room. To me this look bland and steril and soulless. I guess we dont all have the same taste in aesthetics.
reply

Why Switzerland cannot build a huge Central Railway Station in Zurich -like in Berlin and Vienna? For trains able to go both directions! Because Swiss are farmers, not builders? -
reply

Although the Girunos do have a nicely designed interior, they never reach the ride comfort of the true hispeed Italo AGVs, which have also bigger windows and a more spacious cabin.
reply

280 km in 3hr45min makes avg speed 75kmh while other european trains are well beyond the avg 200 kmh mark. And they claim to have the longest europe's tunnel.
Big money for nothing

reply

I clicked on the video and was like -Wait, we have high-speed trains in Switzerland now! - but it's 250 km/h, even the Frecciarossa runs faster (360km/h max, 300 km/h certified)
reply

I'm from Switzerland and haven't been on this train yet. I am sure it is a good train and very suitable for the task, but the best highspeed train in europe?
reply

This goddamn awful EU-mandated door opening/closing beeping. I hope whoever came up with that crap has tinnitus for the rest of their lives
reply

I took this train from Lindau to Munich. I really enjoyed the ride! It's comfy, it's fast and it tilts in the curvy landscape of the Allgaeu!
reply

The best high speed train in terms of comfort on board, qualities during the ride and design is with no discussion the ETR1000.
reply

This is not a high-speed train, it is only a medium-speed (250 km/h.
High speed trains go faster than 250 km/h, up to 360 km/h.

reply

6: 00 Oh crap - I thought the Alps were 200' tall and flat on top because EVERY time I have gone to Switzerland its raining.
reply

Every year the core of Europe moves north. Even within SUI the least developed part is Tessin! North to the future! -
reply

I mean the comfort is pretty good for modern trains. But if you know how comfy the 1st class in swiss wagons like the EW I was.
reply

Europe does love high speed trains no matter where you go to. High speed railway is the way forward to go from A to B.
