A heritage unit is a railroad locomotive that has been painted or lettered to honor a past railroad or retired paint scheme. In this episode of Train Talk, we will discuss heritage locomotives as well as other commemorative locomotives. We'll briefly examine the history of these special locomotives as well as some of the different paint scheme designs that have been used for these unique pieces of railroad history Wahsatch: The UP heritage units are not numbered for the year they were taken by UP, they are numbered for the year the railroad ceased to operate. For example, the DRGW took over the SP in 1989, but renamed to SP. Then, in 1996, UP took over the SP, gaining DRGW along with it.

I love all of your stuff Mike, I've really been impressed with your later train talk videos. I would love to see you talk about some geographic histories of rail lines- some have some really interesting histories. As a fellow west coaster, Tehachapi, the 2 passes from Sacramento to Reno (Donner/Feather River, and maybe even Moffatt/Tennessee Pass. Thanks for producing such great train videos!

I saw Norfolk Southern's Reading Northern Railroad heritage unit when I was flying to Hilton Head Island
(Edit): My personal favorite Heritage engines are NS 8100 (NKP, UP 1989 (Rio Grande) and NS 8099 (Southern Railroad)

While CSX's Logo Units only bear one sticker, I kinda like how they each have individual names to hark back to said railroads. Not many locomotives in the US get named which has always aluded me a bit

Loved your video Mike! Great locations and very good information. I like NS's and CSX's 9-1-1 also CSX's 1776 painted locomotives. I enjoyed watching your video. Please be careful and stay well: -)

I've only seen one Heritage unit. It was dark, but think it was the CNW version. I see unrepainted old freight cars all the time, especially Southern box cars and BN covered hoppers.

Nice video Mike, you ever consider doing a video of snow removal trains in the Truckee/Donner pass California area? There are a few videos out there of the 'rotary type' but they are dated

Thanks for the great collection. I just did a preorder of Kato's new N scale SP Heritage unit shown at 9: 00. I look forward to having it next to my steam SP Morning Daylight train.
