In the Fall of 2020, San Diego's North County Transit District received several new SC-44 Charger locomotives for Coaster commuter train service. These locomotives will replace the five F40PHM-2C units in early 2021. On the weekend of October 3rd and 4th, NCTD tested out two of these locomotives on short test trains in between Oceanside and San Onofre. Let-s watch locomotive 5002 in operation on several test trips in between Oceanside and Las Pulgas Road

Heh, when the train goes down, the busses have to pick up the slack. (I work on the bus side of NCTD, The Breeze bus line)
I wonder if they will purchase new passenger cars, the Charger livery is a big contrast to the classic livery.
Can-t beat the look of the F40, but these Chargers look like a worthwhile locomotive to take over the service that the 2100-s have faithfully trundled along for the past 25 years.

Thank you for this video. I've been waiting for someone to get some good footage of the new locomotives, and I'm glad Coaster is getting new and eventually more motive power but man are these things ugly. The paint scheme is absolutely atrocious. Amtrak Midwest did it right. The Pacific Surfliner paint is okay. But these? Uggh.

I hate that the new SC-44s don-t have the white Coaster stripe, so they don-t match the cars. I know they-re probably going to change the livery on the bombardier cars. I like the old livery more, I kinda hope they don-t change the livery

This is awesome Mike big fan of your videos. If you know the engineer and conductor of this train please let them know that Horn salute at 4: 06 was repeated on the The Walkersville Southern Railroad
Check out the video

I really love the SC-44's because even though they are a rather interesting addition to the railroading industry, they have features that keep the railroading heritage alive. For example their horns and strobe lights.

You know it's coaster's 25th birthday right? You already had a video for that, but it would have been better if you put the SC-44 charger test train in the 25th anniversary tribute, wouldn't it?
reply

Do you happen to know what those tall pointed things are on the roof of the Coaster locomotives, because i noticed they're on the rear of the Chargers
reply

I wish they would just make 2105 a NCPU heritage unit for the end of trains. I do not think an F40PH Has ever lot off a career like 2105 has to Mike Armstrong
reply

What do you think is going to happen to the F40-s and F59PHI after retirement? Are you thinking about buying 2105 if it is in danger of being scrapped?
reply

I like that brand new toaster which I know you must be thinking that we will miss the old F40PHs because you need to appreciate new motive power
