I feel like with cameras.. it's easier to be happy with basic equipment nowadays because it's much more competent than it used to be in the digital space.. whereas just 10 or 15 years ago, you had to be extremely careful about your purchases and your equipment and your gear because there were a lot of hurdles that you needed to jump over to get an acceptable quality image.. and I'm not saying they don't exist nowadays but it's LOL it's it's a lot better...
As much as I would like to be able to hack every camera like you could the gh2, back then you kind of needed to do that with a person or camera in order to get an acceptable image.. and all the other things involved in that.. and I still remember the the drool over the black magic cameras that had global shutter and an affordable price, which of course came with LOL some technical complications let's just say.. it's kind of the one thing you can't have in a professional industry, and I really wish they had finished the product before they tossed it out the door, despite that they tossed it out the door a year in advance with pre-orders LOL.

To the discussion of RMA's and the like, try getting a game refund through EA's store on PC... Took me more than two weeks, 12+ different support agents with dozens of scripted refund denied responses before an agent told me to include the EA Desktop app log, which their website gives the wrong location for. Was still denied a refund, but I went digging through the log myself, found the lines in the log showing purchase date and time, install date and time, first play date and time as well as duration. Screen-shotting everything and explaining it all as clearly as possible, and it still took multiple support agents before anyone even acknowledged they looked at it, and then they finally refunded me.
Compare that to Steam, where you get a refund within a few hours most of the time. Learned my lesson there I guess.

I had situation about a year ago where my monitor would randomly go black from a split second to several seconds. I would try different outputs on the video card and it would go away for a while then start up again. One thing to check is in the Windows 10 advanced power settings. In the PCI Express power plan turn Link state power management to off.
Here's how to get to it: go to Settings -> System -> Power & sleep -> on the left side click Additional power settings -> in the Power Options you use click Change plan setting -> in the next window click Change advanced power settings -> in the next window find PCI Express and click the + -> Link State Power Management should show up -> change the setting to Off.
I've haven't had any random black screens since then.

Was going to say my buddy got a more modern Camaro, and he grew up knowing how to work on cars and found himself incredibly emasculated that he had to take the Camaro to the dealership in order to get the oil changed because of how ridiculous the modern design is.. where as if it was a motorcycle he could have done all of that himself, and it would have been somewhat easier, if not significantly.. Albeit the stakes might be higher if you screw something up of course.. but you wouldn't need it to lift it to take an under panel off or have to deal with a split gas tank, or the way they set the battery up.

The EAC memory instability thing might have been heat related. Memory becomes unstable when it gets too hot. Of course stressing it would make you think it should be stable but when you test memory you only stress the memory. When you game you disperse 300-600w of heat into your case from GPU and CPU and the memory might get more hot than just stressing it alone. You have to run those memory stability tests with your gpu stressed at the same time to mimic real life use cases. I'm not certain but this might be the issue.

Get well, Gordon. I've been reading his reviews since 1998, first with Boot, MaxPC and then PCWorld (Boot DEC97 was my first issue). Discovered his humorous and outsized personality during his MaxPC podcast days (APPLE !%# SUCKS!) and loyally followed him to PCWorld. I wish him good health and look forward to his return.

Before I moved into my house, I scanned all of my old computer and digital video magazines, nearly 15 years worth. It s actually educational to go back and read those early Aughties issues of Maximum PC. It was also home to Dickie Matthews, the Insult IT Guy.

Been following Gordon's work for about ten years. Absolutely a pillar of the industry. Felt a pit in my stomach when he took his medical leave. Get well soon!
