Sponsor: Arctic Liquid Freezer III on Amazon - https://geni.us/NrMtDT This review of the NVIDIA RTX 5080 graphics card tests the new GPU vs. the RTX 5090, AMD RX 7900 XTX, NVIDIA RTX 4080, 3080, 2080 Ti, and more. Our benchmarks and review of the RTX 5080 compare it to the best video cards out in 2025 (so far) to determine gaming performance via framerate, efficiency and power consumption, and thermal performance of the Founders Edition cooling solution. The RTX 5080 is part of NVIDIA's new Blackwell architecture and includes a number of aspects being tested in separate follow-ups, including dual blow-through cooling for the FE (being tested in ITX), MFG (Multi-Frame Generation) that we have an explainer coming for, and transient power consumption alongside GPU thermals. Today's review focuses on the RTX 5080 and whether it's worth it as compared to other NVIDIA and AMD cards. We'll also address NVIDIA's problematic marketing (again). Hey Steve
I've been following your coverage of the RTX 5090 and 5080, and I had a theory I wanted to get your take on. Given the recent reports of Nvidia's Blackwell AI chips experiencing overheating issues in data centers, do you think it's possible that Nvidia has preemptively downclocked or limited the performance of the RTX 5090/5080 to manage thermal concerns
One thing that stood out to me was Nvidia’s decision to remove hotspot temperature reporting from the 5090. It seems like an odd omissionespecially if there were no underlying thermal concerns. Could this be an attempt to avoid scrutiny on potential overheating issues in the consumer lineup
Would love to hear your thoughts on whether there’s any merit to this theory. Appreciate the work you do!

But what can they put in the middle of the 5080 and the 5090 Where would it fall on the performance chart How I see it, the 5080 super is going to out do the 4090 and will basically be right behind the 5090 because of the small performance difference between the 4090 & 5090. Especially if they increase the vram. And with how much they are pushing the AI and ray tracing the vram is crucial more now than ever. So the 5080 super will be in a position where it's very close to the 5090 which imo should've been the 5080 with maybe about 20GB of vram.
I got a feel that during the 50 series development they face multi challenges with trying to fit the various classes of the 50 series into play because they were mostly focusing on AI instead of core performance

People say business is just what business is, but when you realise the business model is corrupt then this is not a good saying to accept imho. When CEOs get more money than the lower staff who really do the work & keep the business going while ripping us all off (selling less for more), then something is wrong with the whole model. 2% pay rise for lower staff is nothing but for a CEO who can get up to double digits plus benefits that can add up to more than lower staff in one yr, something is wrong. If they shared it better we all could benefit better. We all need to realise & stop contributing to it with our hard earned money.

I have a feeling that not counting 5090, the monster of this generation, RTX 5000 will not be offering any meaningful generational advancement. It will be very little on every model and this seems to be carefully planned by Nvidia. RTX 5080 is probably the biggest dissappointment. The card is ok but in totally wrong proce range. The proce should be halved anfd then I would say it is a very interesting new product. Now I really hope that RX 9070 cards will offer some kind of competition and Nvidia will be forced to cut the prices AT LEAST 30%. Then RTX 5080 would be acceptable. But only just.

Seeing how the 5080 (relatively) sucks, it's no wonder they throttled the availability of the 4080s...
Corporate greed sucks. I guess I'll be waiting to see what AMD does.
Feels like NVidia are just squeezing everything they can out of the gamers that made them what they are while they plot to abandon us completely.
Like they couldn't have made a very decent living while behaving with some moral decorum.
But you know damned well that 'consumers' won't punish them by going elsewhere or waiting... We have only ourselves to blame, as every, for continued corporate misbehaviour.

While I wholeheartedly agree that Nvidia is taking us to the cleaners, I disagree with the assessment that we should have a proportional improvement in price/performance over each generation. That is just like expecting Moore's law to be valid in perpetuity (Moore's law is dead). There is a limit somewhere, and instead of a linear graph, it should be more like a log scale (with occasional stair-steps when new technology enables large jumps in performance). The issue we're having with these cards is unrealistic expectations versus price, not the card.

I bet that AMD did not show the 9070 because they realised that Nvidia would disappoint in performance gains so they can label it as 9080 and charge more for it. Their 3 months delay seems to point to them speeding up the release of their 9060 so that they can rebrand it as 9070 to compete at the same low level that we can expect of the 5070.
So yeah, AMD will be able to compete with the 5080 but not due to merit from AMD, but by the greediness of Nvidia labeling what should be a 70 class card as an 80 class. And we customers lose, again.

I hope Nvidia gets hammered (nobody buys) on this card....or rather the 50 series in it's totality....Their stock price just plummeted like 15-18% (roughly) b/c of competition (in ai) from China (or something)...Guess you should have, treated better, all those gamers you thought were irrelevant b/c of the whole ai boom...LLM models are awesome and useful and a major innovation in tech...but as the ai bubble is now kind of bursting (ALREADY...)...it... could...(VERY well) be an unbelievable sight to behold!!

As someone that is looking to upgrade from a 2080TI i would have gone for the 5090 since i require more VRAM but ive also serviced my own card 5-6 times over the 6 years of having it and i don't want to deal with the liquid metal along with almost double the power draw over the 80's seeing how id probably be using the new setup for 6 years also the 5080 seems like an ok option considering its like 110% better the my 2080TI, although the VRAM temps could use improving.

I really hope AMD comes out with something meaningful in this performance bracket at a lower price. Currently the cheapest card I saw here in Norway was sitting at about 1200$. Looking at used options online one of the best I could find (assuming you wanted a decent amount of VRAM) was a 4070Ti Super at 850$. I couldn’t find neither the 7900 XT or XTX for sale unless you count it being included in some complete builds with otherwise overpriced components :(

Glad I made my move from 6950xt -> 4080S when I did back in May 2024. I mainly bought it for the efficiency and because it suits the sff build that I needed to move onto as part of my move. I've been really pleased with how it has performed, in isolation of course. I know it's not really the best value you can hit but for what I was moving on from and what I needed, it has kept showing me that it was a good decision

they really tanked the 80 class. starting with the skimp 15gb. Iam very disappointed and nvidia's marketing strategy with this card has left a bad taste in my mouth. It is obvious they are leaving a gap for the the 5080ti 20 gb card to fill and even that card will be considered tanked compared to last gen. decided not to upgrade because of it. notch that up to a lost sale Nvidia!

The way the internet talks about Starfield is such nonsense. The game is a good but flawed game. It's the definition of a 7/10 type game.
Yet people pretend it's soooo awful. Meanwhile, they beg for Elder Scrolls 6 news, even though they've spent the last 2 years trashing Bethesda & saying they suck now (oh, and hyping up a PS5 port for a game they supposedly hate... makes sense).

I understand that compared to the 40 series, this is underwhelming, and the Super/TI version they'll launch in a year or two () will probably bring the expected boost more VRAM, but would it be worth purchasing over the base 3080 DLSS 4/Multi-frame generation sound like very potent tools to keep performance up in this year's games (provided the optimization won't be bungled).
reply

I completely agree with you about the DLSS 4. These are fake frames and with regard to multiplayer, they can NEVER make accurate assumptions about what 16-32 players are doing in a game.
I felt that among all of the 5080 reviews that your review was the best and most reasonable. The 5080 is an amazing card. And you were very fair. Thanks! For gamers, this is THE CARD!!!!

reply

So if AI is one of the crucial feature in boosting framerates by prediction, why is GamersNexus excluding such feature in its reviews and somehow making the new cards look worse than they actually are GamerNexus doesn't like new technologies and prefers old school Those extra Cuda cores in 5000 series card mean nothing in this scientific review!! Disappointing.

For pricing do people understand how much say it costs to produce 1 card How much are these corporations ripping us off This is what needs to be highlighted as we can't know until we know. ! card could cost $300 to make then selling them for $2,000 - this is how corporations are becoming richer than countries which should never be a thing imho & pure greed.
reply

If AMD didn't fumble every possible opportunity, this could be a good chance for the 9070... assuming the leaked claims that it's close to a 4080 are true. And assuming FSR4 is a significant improvement over FSR 3.1. AND assuming AMD prices the 9070s significantly lower than the Nvidia cards, then AMD might be able to claw back some market share.

Having had the 7900xtx for almost two years (and getting it for $800) I can say it might be one of the best cards for value at 1440p. It has been amazing and I can play most games at 240fps at max settings. Few games I play require me to sacrifice some settings to get 240 fps at 1440. Seeing it compete with the 5080 at 1440p is awesome.

7900XTX idle power consumption still aint fixed by AMD, drawing 100 watts using a high refresh monitor. xeneon flex at any refresh rate above 60 Hz will make the card go from 18 watts to 100 while idling the desktop. (using a 60-120hz secondary monitor). Something to do with the increased bitrate required for ultrawides
