Sponsor: Thermal Grizzly Aeronaut on Amazon https://geni.us/e8Oq & Hydronaut (Amazon) https://geni.us/hOQrBAb Wendell from Level1 Techs got up with us to talk about the decay of Google's Search behavior and results, especially with the advent of AI search assistants. Google, probably unexpected to them, ended up facing its first real competition in years primarily from ChatGPT. Now, Google is scrambling to add its own assistant search results. We talk with Wendell in a meandering discussion about what that means for Google. They let me down by putting the shortcuts on the new page in a single line. For a while you could set some flags to get back the two line page, but they got rid of those recently. I went to their help forums and mentioned how the took away my choice. Then in the next sentence mentioned I could always 'choose' to use Bing search, or even Edge. (yes, I know, trading one devil for another, but sometimes you need to play them off against each other). As soon as I posted it i set my home page to Bing, now I have my two rows of icons back. Sometimes even a temporary boycott will make the money people sit up and notice. More people should try it.

Self hosted open-webui Ollama searxng is what I use for all of my research. It's a pretty good experience overall since I can choose pre-trained models for handling parsing the data and providing a more relevant answer. The biggest thing is that I can choose it's initial sources and when it returns results after doing a web crawl it provides results. something that basically every llm provider was afraid of doing when I was using the consumer products. I don't know if that has changed yet but if it hasn't then they should absolutely do it despite the whole rule of keeping users on your site no matter what.

The problem is, that companies think, they can grow all the time. They provide shittier experience, shittier products, they are objectively worse than they used to be, but they still want to grow ... so you pay more for the shittier product. And then some owners, CEOs or whoever comes... boys, we are doing great, just keep it up and they develop even shittier products and services for higher prices...... there must be a point where this big bubble just pops. Like some startup coming with something new that pops this bubble and big corpos go down under.

tbh is a real problem, when you have smart people who create something profitable and then over time those smart and innovative people are replaced with process min-max oriented people who dont really know how and why the whole thing works - rather they just know how to (maybe) maintain and tweak it a little bit.
Its one of those things that may appear cheaper and more efficient on the paper, but really can crash the whole thing on the long term.
If you havent got the right people, you really dont have anything in the end.

Dead internet theory is a conspiracy theory for now, but feels like the inevitable future if the tech giants stay the course. Just computer-generated nonsense being stolen from each other to the point of the mainstream internet becoming a wasteland of conspiracy theories and alternative facts.
The hallucination problem is an issue already, but if we do see the internet consolidated into the hands of a few aggressively profit-focused giants, it only gets worse. What a bright future...

interesting fact about the source of the glue on pizza thing... Its actually something done in film and TV to make pizza cheese extra stringy on camera. Its not done to eat. In fact dont eat it... But for the camera shot mixing certain glues to the cheese makes it stringy even when cooled. So you can get the stretchy stringy cheese shot youre looking for...
Another fun fact. A well cooked chicken or turkey on camera.... is a really nasty cold bird with varnish painted on.

I can't imagine an industry where you make products deliberately worse
Taking functionality away from consumers and then reselling it back to them at a premium has been done for years now, it's abundant everywhere.
How about every industry that sells addons for products, what about gaming and microtransactions (for example, inventory limitations), what about flight tickets (seat reservations, paying for hand luggage).
Sadly, there are countless examples...

My dad is a boomer who takes every chance he can to sell me on Chat GPT and how I should get a job involved in it. Every time I try in vain to explain to him how large language models have completely ruined the ability to do cursory research on the internet: LLM's have pumped out countless pseudo-blog alphabet soup web pages where they regurgitate surface level knowledge or outright misinformation. I hate it here, dudes.

These companies seem to literally think there's a possible future for them where all consumers just sit there pushing a big red button 24/7 and the companies get wads of money from somewhere. They keep wanting more more more, but they don't get how people's income doesn't keep pace with that. Apparently that's not a problem to them.

Unlock the secrets of infinite progress! When you can't make something better, just make it a little worse each day. Once people start to notice, revert back to the way things used to be. Advanced practitioners always revert to something slightly worse than what they had when they embarked on their path to perpetual enlightenment.

4:10 over time the public could train the LLM to be racist or left leaning or right leaning, or whatever else. Not dissimilar to the Microsoft app a few years ago that ripped on Jews etc. the app Microsoft turned off
The future is crazy iPhone integration of AI is scary as there is no delineation of real info vs ai info etc.

Meh. Not news. Most products today are made deliberately worse than they could be. Light bulbs are the best known example, but everything is made this way. Salesmen don't want products that work efficiently and reliably forever. It's a well established fact, and isn't going away. Humans suck, that's all there is to it.

I used to work for DOWTY Information Systems, back in the day (we made modems and communication equipment for submarines). Capacitors and resistors had a shelf life and things were designed to last a bit longer than the warranty. I think now it's more about FOMO and new features that people have to have. Like fashion

Months ago, when the AI search summaries started in earnest, I got multiple very incorrect summaries due to pulling Reddit into them. I reported a few... Not sure how many other people bothered to do that, but it can be very dangerous when folks are searching about health and getting Reddit answers as the best ones

1 person 20 years to hand teach an AI. Or 20 people in 1 year. I'm not sure why nobody is just teaching an AI like a child and holding its hand to learn how to weed out bad information by creating a skeptical system. The reason these AI go insane is because they try to teach it in 1 year with a billion people.
reply

24:48 this would be nice but technically impossible in a LLM
That isn't how they work. They make a neural network but dont know where stuff that gets generated comes from. Its just a black box of connections based on training data. There is no way to go the other direction.

That is the definition of Made in America make it last only as long as research shows is necessary before the product breaks down and forces you to buy another one. That is why I almost always stay away from Made in America it used to mean quality, now it means quarterly profits.

We dont understand nor think what we should about artificial intelligence. We are neither smart enough or prepaired enough for loosing command or control if it. Im scared where this is going and yall seem to not want to look at the problem and fix it.
reply

We have completely left the consumer first model. The objective is not help people find stuff, it's show people ads.
Companies work for shareholders, not consumers. Look everywhere, products and services are intentionally getting made worse.

reply

Every single corporation that basically owns their market tends to get protective with it. You don't want to mess with it for fear of losing what you have. Eventually someone will do it and then it's too late.
