They Changed Everything: Valve Steam Deck OLED vs. LCD Tear-Down

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
The new Valve Steam Deck OLED didn't just change the screen: Almost every part of the device has had some sort of revision, from the screws to the power topology of the motherboard. Some of these changes happened silently in the Voyager platform refresh for the Steam Deck, but the majority of large changes are brand new. Memory underwent relocation and now uses better modules, the cooling solution has had its fan flipped and thickened, and the controller component PCBs have had some consolidation and durability improvements. In this tear-down of the new Steam Deck OLED, we'll compare the new Steam Deck vs. the original, old Steam Deck LCD model. Our full review with battery life, thermals, and acoustics will come later.

Burning question because you're seemingly the only people with a preview unit who've had the guts to take it apart - would the process of replacing the internal SSD be the same, easier, or harder than the LCD model? I swapped my LCD's storage for a 2TB drive, and if it's significantly harder or impossible to replace the internal in the OLED, that's absolutely stopping me from upgrading.

I'm glad valve is treating this much differently from other companies. This isn't a laptop jammed into a handheld format. This isn't a mini PC stuffed into a nintendo switch. This is a console. A console needs to be simple. That is the goal of a console and they have succeeded in this by simplifying the hardware. The console needs to achieve nothing more than its sole purpose.

Not gonna lie, I'm more than a little disappointed that Valve didn't work with GuiliKit on including Hall Effect Sticks and Triggers out of the box with this revision. And in fact, they seemed to go out of their way to redesign the sticks just so GuiliKits current aftermarket Sticks are no longer compatible.

7:36 Oh no...The new WiFi adaptor. The old Deck's WiFi 5 adaptor can be upgraded to a much better WiFi 6E Intel AX210 due to same form factor. The one from Deck OLED seems not compatible from the looks of it. Now that Intel WiFi 7 adaptors (Intel BE200) are in the market, old Deck users can upgrade .

Since you mentioned that, according to Valve, it's possible to remove the OLED screen from the device without taking apart the whole back of the device do you think it will make things like shell-swaps for third party shells easier? Or at least involving less heat gun + adhesive related shenanigans?

Does the smaller number of memory dies translate to a theoretical and/or real world decrease in memory bandwidth? I've heard that the memory interface is a major bottleneck for modern AMD APUs because there's so much compute on tap and there's a GPU sharing the memory interface...

I didn't even know they were release a oled version Depending on the next videos to come I might buy this one and give my sister my old steam deck. My main problem is the battery life, the fan sound and heat. Hopefully this new version fixes all that

this seems pointless like the move from the 7mn and the memory thing and clean mobo seems pointless other than to like practice design and improve it like for further future iteration of the products.

if anything this shows valve is serious about the future of steam deck / handheld gaming. ... i was one of those to get my hands early on the deck and have been enjoying it

Why they didn't called it Steam Deck 1.5 or something like that? Are they shy of these improvements? Or they want to sell rest of LCD models? (insert joke about NVidia 12GB here)

Kudus to the engineering. Everyone who even routed a small and simple PCB knows how complicated it can get.
Can only imagine how much effort goes into this redesign.

I want to like it but its just such a poor value compared to the legion go. The hardware on that is up to 2 generations ahead and it got more functionality.

I want to know more about the screen differences, depth and cabling etc, will it ever be feasible for a mod onto the og deck(different cable needed etc)

The production quality keeps going up and up and the quality of the content never fails. Fantastic video yet again. GN carrying the industry rn.

So the new battery can't fit in the old Deck? I was hoping to maybe buy the bigger battery separately and upgrade my LCD Deck at some point.

CAN WE PLEASE GET BACK TO CASE AND COOLER REVIEWS?!?! I'm bored with all these uninteresting news updates, handheld teardowns, and CPU reviews!

Great video! Even for someone who doesn't understand much about electrical engineering, this video was pretty clear and easy to understand.

Nintendo: here, have the same device with a better screen.
Valve: here, this has the same name but it's basically a new device.
