Off-Grid Log Cabin Makeover: Stone Veneer, Eavestrough, Landscaping & Campfire Cooking

I finish installing split river stone veneer on the base of the breezeway on my off grid log cabin and install eavestrough above it to divert water away from the wall and foundation. I landscape the front of the cabin to hide the foundation of the front porch on the cabin. On a campfire, I grill steak and eggs for dinner before heading out on an evening bear hunt. The following morning, I cook eggs, side pork and bear loins for breakfast on my wood stove inside the cabin. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. The best thing any man can hope to do in this world is make a woman happy and that my boy is a happy woman if I ever saw one. You keep going and your life will be a good one. Pro tip on the coop, collect cardboard boxes when you get supplies and break one down and lay it flat on the coop floor. At the end of every month you just pull it out in one shot and the coop is clean. Make a trash/compost pit near your garden and dump the chicken shavings and poop there so you start your compost for next year’s garden. I hate to say it but your chicken coop also needs to be within 25 yards of the house because when winter comes you aren’t going to want to trudge up some hill to gather eggs. It’s also smart because you want the flock to pick the area around the house completely of bugs, spiders and flies etc. They have excellent vision and will get larva before they hatch. They’ll also get rodents and snakes while they’re small. They’ll keep the area around your house pest free and trimmed down neat and clean. You also want them close so if a predator comes around the dogs and you will hear it and can react quick. seconds matter if a fox attacks or something and they can kill an entire flock in minutes. Ok that’s it for now, I’m very curious about a list of natural resources on the island. Is there clay Granite Basalt Chickens will also eat crushed sea shells and convert that calcium into egg shells so crush a bunch down and put it by the door. Oh, and get your well water tested just because. You want to know what’s in it and it’s worth a hundred bucks or whatever.

Awe Cali is so precious! Shawn your home is so beautiful. The stone finish is so much work yet so beautiful and rewarding! I love when I see you look at things on your home and I know you have so much to be proud of! I remember the last cabin and all you did before they tried to put a street close by. It was so beautiful and perfect too. I wonder if those same people still live there or if it was too hard for them. I always wonder what other things they may have done or added to it. If you could share that, that would be great! take care and thank you so much for sharing all you do. The nature sounded wonderful.

They do make sturdier attic ladders; with 1x6 runners, rather than those rickety 1x4's. They make metal ones too. So once that ladder finally gets worn out. I think it would be worth it to upgrade to a nicer one; that will last longer. The one you have is really only meant for minimal use. There are some much nicer options-- just saying. For a future upgrade. (eventually; That one still has years left in her.

I was salivating a tad when I saw you cooking eggs MULTIPLE times in this video. I haven't had eggs for month now as there are non in my local supermarket. Apparently there was a bird flu issue and they had to cull a lot of hens, so now we have a severe egg shortage Australia wide. Lucky bugger you are with your own egg production facility and your hens are probably also safe from bird flu due to your remoteness.

Your landscaping is truly beautiful. If it isn't thriving, try gently pulling them up and slightly scraping the root ball to release new root growth. Those roots can get pot-bound and the plant can suffocate. Once you release them a bit, just slip it back into it's hole and replant.
Every video shows beautiful and useful improvements. You should be very proud of the work you've done.

I've found with mortar work if it's to wet at first, I just open my thermos of coffee and have a cup. When I come back it's perfect, looks good Shawn. Theres is something about stone work up against wood that creates this amazing energy, don't forget to seal the stone to make those colors pop. Rainguard Low Luster Sealer.

Hello Mr. James,
I just watched your short that talked about adapting to the world as it changes. Well, try adapting when you are blind from glaucoma, in a wheelchair because you can't feel your legs from a broken back, and to top it off, you're broke. I'm just saying.

Kali has a sense of humor. Trying to make you crawl under the cabin! LOL Your Cute and conniving furry kiddo! You do know, no matter how much we enjoy watching you posts and what you build, thousands of us are even bigger Cali fans than we are yours! She is so terrific!

With all the resources you have, the meats and eggs - it’s really disappointing to see that you feed your dog the worst possible food. Kibble Rendered crap that goes rancid quickly. Please watch the documentary Pet Fooled’ and educate yourself on species-appropriate diets.

The current forest fire map of Canada shows you are in a low to moderate risk area. That which kept some homes in LA safe was to keep vegetation away from the perimeter. What can you do to keep your wood structure protected in the case that Ontario becomes ablaze

Are you going to remove the Eavesthourghs /gutters here in the winter I can't put them on my cabin as they would get ripped off by the ice/snow sliding off the roof. My cabin is at 9000' so that may be why.

Another question. Do you know who made your snow shoes hanging on the wall. my husband’s grandfather made snow shoes many years ago in the Muskoka area. His name was Clarence Bouges. Just curious
