I prepare for the spring bear season by making wooden arrows for my longbow in my off grid workshop in early April. I practice shooting daily for the next month and then in early May, I construct a brush pile ground blind and set up trail cameras to monitor the bears, identifying several young bears, including two boars and two sows, including one with a fourteen month old cub. On May 26, the weather and wind direction is right to hunt the blind closest to my cabin at the back of my property. At 7: 30, I shoot a small male bear and spend the next coupe of hours hauling it out of an alder swamp and transporting it back to the cabin where I hang it in the screened in outdoor kitchen to dress it and cool it overnight. The following morning, I get up early and butcher the bear, cooking a backstrap in a cast iron pan on the woodstove along with side pork and eggs. I render the fat into bear grease which I use for cooking, face cream and preserving wood and leather. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. You people who seem so upset about him killing the bear, do not seem to realize that if it were not for hunters keeping the number of bears low, there would be MANY more roaming in your neighborhoods, than currently happen to. The reason you are able to sit out on your porch at night feeling so safe, is because there are responsible hunters keeping the number of bears low each year on annual hunts. They are not staying away from your neighborhoods out of some kind of respect for your privacy. These hunts give them a healthy respect and fear of man, so that they keep to themselves in places less inhabited by humans. But take away the right for people to hunt them, and in a few years they will begin to take the land back over(and your cute little dog and cat will no longer be safe to roam around) Be THANKFUL for good hunters like Shawn and others like him. Thank you Shawn for showing how it can be done responsibly and reverently like the Indians always did.

Great hunt shawn and that you for taking us along with you. That was awesome to watch and would enjoy more like that if you can.
Cali got all excited seeing the bear come back with you thinking yeah sad I love bear meat to. Let's good im hungry
I liked the slow tracking to find it after the shot too.
I was like now I know he hot it we already seen it on his porch.
But the anticipation still grew the longer you walked through the thick brush.
Then the side by side winch job was cool to watch you set up to.
That made a tough job much easier getting it up out of there.
Thanks shawn appreciate it

Shawn, very disappointing that you had to go to the point of showing the world your kill, those of us that have followed you for years know how you lived and we continued to follow you through your ups downs and then you decided to come back to your original format, it is not necessary to show your kill on the veranda that we avid followers have been with you on your building journey, we
Knew
what you ate but you spared us from the kill we are mostly meat eaters but don’t share your instincts to enjoy a meal of meat
This may seem convoluted but i am sure you know what I mean, i make this comment with respect

I see there are huge fires in Canada's forests again May - I saw the reports last summer that said those fires in 2024 burned about 20% of the wood that would be used to build homes. If around 20% of the forests go down in fire, that would be around 20% for 2024 and 20% for 2025 = 40% of the lumber used to build homes in the U. S. My guess as a former carpenter is that at a minimum it would double the price of wood and my guess is x3 or x4 or x5 or x for lumber to build with. That would seriously impact the economies of Canada and the U. S! Hopefully no fires near you. Nice bear.

That was brilliant using fresh cut evergreens as part of the blind (masks odors) & allowing the animal time to get familiar with the changes in the area. I seen how he flinched once and scampered away quickly as if unsure of the new blind. Might I suggest cutting the fat into smaller pieces, it will render faster. This summer you should get good at roping so you can catch the next one with a lariat so it doesn't get so far away lol. Fantastic video Shawn, shared proudly on my fb page. Lots of Bear hunters down here in WV. Thank you for taking the time to share.

Man I just learned than that can be eaten, I am surprised, I know we eat meat but can not avoid feeling a little bit sorry for the animal even when they could eat us, I know I have a chicken heart I even feelt happy when you have left your beautiful dog safe inside the cabin. Did I understood wrong or that bear were around the cabin might be tracking you 2 That sound dangerous, you have my respect sir.

My main interest is hunting. I have three hunting dogs for driven hunts for boar, deer and moose. Very different from tree stands and baiting. Bird hunting, predator hunting and even stalking boar in fields. Love the process from field/forest to plate. Bow hunting is not yet allowed in Sweden. Urban environmentalists may think they are close to nature, and understand it, but they don’t have a clue.

I’m 71 years old. Lived a few years in the Catskills in the 60’s and never saw a bear. Now living in Rensselaer County 20 minutes east of Troy NY we have had visiting bears for the past 6 years, two cubs last year don’t think I could ever kill one for my own benefit unless it was an overpopulation situation. we do have a massive deer problem and culling the herd makes sense.

Mercy, it's hard to take care of all the duties without any help, but it's a good lifestyle! You're hanging in there, and your dream is coming together, slowly but surely! Thanks for sharing. I'm always impressed by all the knowledge you have! Keep your back and knees, and don't hurt yourself like I did! It's a bummer! I love your videos!

Love your videos building cabins, or canoeing, or cooking, and the beautiful landscapes, etc
But I sure don't like your hunting videos. Specially with bow and arrows. Why do you have to kill the creatures of the Wild Is that a game Do you enjoy killing and making animals suffer Does that make you feel more manly

reply

go vegan bro. nothing manly about killing wild animals. thats their home too. you caneat berries and all the greeens and mushrroms and maple syrip you want. start an apple farm whatever. but to kill for food when there are so many other options is hard to watch. be one with nature and youll feel better too

How much hanging weight meat do you think you got from that bear Bear and pigs are in the same family, does bear meat taste similar to pork Are you going to save the hide to hang on a wall somewhere or for a bear rug Thank you for all your effort to share this bear harvesting episode with us!

Does Ole Cali crap in the cabin when you’re gone How about the bear’s heart and liver They’re a great source of iron. How’s your ability to freeze the meat working out I’m curious, have you had any cabin settling yet, and have you utilized the Jack post

Two questions:
1. Did you think of leaving Cali in the outdoor kitchen when you go hunting
2. Are you concern about worms in bears I have seen several videos of bears with worms several meters long dragging behind them.
3. Can you eat the organs in bears

reply

That meal is pure rocket fuel for the human body. I can hear my own stomach crying out for that sort of nourishment. Fantastic to observe a person acting like a human being. All the fundamental parts of humanity on display. As nature intended.

Bear meat is much like Pork. Where I live in Iowa, we see them every year. For the most part they are shy. But in some cases they can be a real nuisance. Too many in one place cannot work out well. Enjoy your Bear steak, Shawn.

Awesome video, I have been waiting for this type of video showing more of your hunting I realise you can't put in much of the kill shot but thanks for showing what you have.
