It's all about a Dog - Learning to Fly Fish with my Golden Retriever, Brook Trout in the Wilderness

It's all about a dog. Spring arrived late this year, with April snow and a slow melt but I was eager to start the open water fishing season. I have dedicated myself to become a better fly fisherman this year and I have many wilderness fishing excursions planned. To prepare for the season, I spent countless hours practicing casting, tying flies, making a wooden fishing net and restoring my 50 year old wood and canvas canoe. Cali, my golden retriever, loves the water and canoeing as much as I do, which makes fishing, especially in small rivers and streams, difficult as she constantly jumps in the water, searching out sticks and stones from the bottom of the lake or river. After a few failed spring trout fishing trips, we head into the backcountry in my wood canoe with fly rod in hand and land several wild native brook trout while a young bald eagle looks on. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. Most likely you will never read this Shawn , but wanted to share anyway. While visiting family I was talking to my 5yr old niece and she was bored. So, I opened my phone and guess who had a video about Cali and himself We started watching the video and I want you to know we discussed this video as it played and even had a bet on what you were making in the shop. She loved watching Cali in the water and the canoe. I got up and she continued to watch the rest of the video by herself. You have impressed a 5 yr old little girl.

Hi again SHAWN
What a beautiful time just you and Cali out in nature doing what you enjoy. Such a loyal and loving best buddy you've had for all the years back to almost the beginning with her. Special stories and memories that will last your lifetime.
Thx as always for sharing but especially the times and adventures with you and Cali. Enjoy every minute you still have together. She's a special one and you are too!

Cali seems to understand English a little. she and Shawn are very close companions. This seems like a tribute to Cali in many ways. I love the peaceful music and beauty of nature in this vlog. very wonderful stuff.
Love the time Cali was resting her head on the side of the canoe. like she was meditating. seems a bit sad that dogs age faster than humans. This was special, so thanks a lot for sharing.

you need to make a peg hole table work bench top. you seem to be doing a lot of wood bending and the peg board table top will allow you to wedge the shape tight and use odd shapes as well. heck a good 2 in table top with 1/2 dowel holes every 2 inches and then a 3/4in surface you can put over top for when you dont want stuff to fall down the holes

So jealous of the solitude you get to enjoy everyday! I travel the states in my van and I find those special spots here and there. Seems like people have forgotten the music of solitude. Load cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers, blowers etc. has polluted everything and no one seems to care. To me noise pollution is the worst pollution of all!

Shawn, Most tea bags that are sealed with glue are sealed with PVC glue please use stapled or tied teabags. I found this out in working through an online/book herbal medicine course with Rosemary Gladstar. Knowing that you care deeply about your health and nutrition I thought you should know this.

Watching you cleaning the canoe just thought I would send a message. there is some spray that is called Awesome at the dollar tree it works fantastic for that ingrained staining. have used it on a trailer and will take the stains right out in no time flat. just wanting to be helpful. :)

Yunno, that old canoe isn’t going to be as
Iight and fast as Kevlar. It’s weighted down with warmth and history and class. Might as well just make a paddle. 3 more years and I can hit the off ramp to the slow road to dirt, leather, wood, hair, and scales. Great video. Thanks

Even here on the Canary Islands, where I live, the colder season have shifted longer into the new year and summer is coming later almost by two months now the last ten years, meaning you might have more time in October and November. seems like this all over the globe

Thank you for the lovely visit! I'm used to lake fishing, but the fly fishing sure looks interesting.
Cali has such an expressive face. Beautiful and well-behaved! Sitting on shore while you fish, she is extremely patient. Blessings on you all!

Just found out that my wife's breast cancer has returned after 21 years. We were emotionally wrecked and were soothed by watching this beautiful video together. Thank you for taking the time to share such an incredible piece of your life with us all.

That run from Round Lake (Kawawayamog) into North Tea is one of the best trips I make into Algonquin Park. We do a yearly fishing trip into Manitou every year and use this route. The water is really high. Looks like you can coast all the way.

Of all the canoes I've used and restored, those Hurons are my favourite. Not always built for pretty but an all round great paddling canoe and one with a few details that make them easier to bring back to life.

My son is an Orvis endorsed guide on the Madison River in Ennis, MT. This video reminds me of him! Ask for Jim Bob at The Tackle Shop, the oldest outfitter in SW Montana. (tell him Mom sent you. Beautiful video!

For me all your videos are therapy. I can't be outdoors anymore, because of severe arthroses and no doctors here in Quebec. You bring me to peace and see all you do, makes me embrace dreams of off the grid.

So nice seeing the beauty of your kitchen again. Really, the logs, the cabinets; all the wood is so pretty. What a life: nature's constant beauty, the quiet, the solitude. Everywhere you look: beauty.
