Building an Underground Root Cellar with Burnt Timbers Shou Sugi Ban, Yakisugi

With an abundance of dying trees on my properties, building an underground root cellar with charred timbers makes more sense than using concrete and rocks. Burning the wood makes it more resistant to decay from moisture and insects. My vegetable garden is overflowing with food and I need a place to store it immediately and longterm, along with fish and game from the surrounding Canadian wilderness

Please be so very very careful Shawn on what you pick and eat from the woods. I cannot stress this enough! Or hard enough. Many a good Hunter has died because he picked the wrong thing and ate it. And Im talking about men that have spent many years in the woods hunting season and they were very well-versed about being out in the woods. And so many of their friends and their wives said they dont understand how this could happen because they all seem to know what to pick to eat. Especially when it comes to mushrooms. So many of them will kill you so quick.

From the looks of it, thats going be one helluva leviathan size root-cellar. Myyyyyyy Lord at how wide / long it is. Has to be more going on here then a simple 5 by 6 or 8 root cellar. Which is all one needs for storing veggies outside and to keep from freezing. Underground. We built one, 35 years ago. Behind our log home here in NW Montana outside of Eureka. Still going strong. But a quarter of that size. Man.

Hello sir. Thank you for your very interesting videos! Is there somewhere where a person with no construction level experience can learn these skills you demonstrate(building the cabin itself, the cellar, garden, etc? The video is very helpful, yet I think having practice in real time in person would help too. I live in the US. Thank you.

1: 20 Oh hey! That place looks a lot like my place. I have a lot of plum trees, and it's very forestry. It has been trimmed a bit, but still. It used to have this really nice wood shadow.

Just show that dog that you love him. Hi look sad when you work on things. Sometimes show him that you notise him. Love your work and keep up that great work. Wish you two all best.
