I have 3 carry systems. A shoulder pouch for scouts, a day pack for overnight trips, and an appropriate ALICE size pack for weekend or winter camping. My scout pouch and day pack always has a poncho, and Mylar SOL bivvy. Insulating around the bivvy will get you to 28F or above depending on clothes and surrounding insulation. I use a compact 2 lb sleep bag with the Mylar bivvy between 50- 32F. I'm switching to gel alcohol fuel Swiss military stove. I can easily refill it at home with Sterno, it will hold a cup or pot, less mess, and easier to light, and very compact. I carry similar items. I use Frog Togg Realtree rain pants and Jacket instead of canoe gear. Shelter to protect from exposure is extremely important. I use a nylon 8. 5X8. 5 tarp and the poncho for shelter for more than one overnight trips. The poncho has so many uses. Have you considered getting a poncho liner, putting a 20 zipper in the middle of it, so you can wear it with or without the poncho. I've been enjoying your vids. Thanks for sharing.

I got lost overnight in northern Minnesota, late September, while grouse hunting. I did not have any survival gear with me (Not even a lighter/fire starter. It was sprinkling, so I just crawled up underneath a spruce tree until morning. Did not have any real repercussions (health issues, etc, but I was lucky, and got out of the woods by noon.

Well thought out kit. I carry the SOL Escape Bivy most hikes (or paddles) but have not used it. I especially like the idea of using the kayaking gloves. Should call the next video the Guns N' Roses camp out: ) Thanks for sharing

Not just for a lost scenario, Sean, but, suppose a bad storm came up and canoeing would be hazardous. That's when emergency shelter would be needed for the night. Very good video. Excellent everyday carry equipment.

Looking forward to seeing the next episode. There are far to few people who actually go out in the woods and actually put their theories and survival knowledge to the test. Hats off to you for being one of the few.

I love my Boreal 21. I dont think you'll be disappointed. I like the vid, good to see what you can do without, and what you should never do without.

Remember to use the rain pants as a tourniquet to keep yourself from bleeding out while trying to reach your buried first aid kit; )
