In this short video, I review 3 books on log cabin building - One Mans Wilderness, By Sam Keith from the journals and photographs of Richard Proenneke, More Readings from One Mans Wilderness, the Journals of Richard L. Proenneke and The Craft of Log Building by Hermann Phleps, Translated and adapted from the original 1942 German by Roger MacGregor, commissioned by Lee Valley. Even though my log cabin build was very organic and did not require or use blueprints, I gained valuable information and insights from these three books on how to build a log cabin and live in the wilderness alone

Excellent stuff Shawn. I've owned the Swerer production of Dick Proenneke for many years but would like to get my hands on his work by Sam Keith and his other journals thanks to your video. Truly a fascinating man uniquely equipped for this enterprise both in terms of skills and mind set. He actually went up the mountain side every fall and took a sheep for his own consumption. Preferred it over caribou or moose if I remember right. Usually smoked it to preserve for the winter.
Two more books I highly recommend for their non-fiction historicity and look into the reality of Canadian trappers in the 1930s & 40s are North to Cree Lake and Face the North Wind by A. L. Karras. Truly remarkable the substance, courage and talent of these earlier trappers in Canada that really mirror what we've witnessed in Proenneke. Precious little of that pioneering spirit left in our land!

Have read One Mans Wilderness and More Readings From One Mans Wilderness more time than I can count. The films are great too but I prefer his books as he was so thorough in his journals. One of my favorite lines. I watched an eagle turn slowly and fall away, quick-sliding across the dark stands of spruce that marched in uneven ranks up the slopes. His piercing cry came back on the wind. I thought of the man at his desk staring down from a city window at the ant colony streets below, the man toiling beside the thudding and rumbling of machinery, the man commuting to his job the same way at the same time each morning, staring at but not seeing the poles and the wires and the dirty buildings flashing past. Perhaps each man had his moment during the day when his vision came, a vision not unlike the one before me.
Thanks for inspiring us.

Shawn, I love your approach to life and peace and all that you do. Now is a good as time as any, but ever since I started watching your videos I've been meaning to tell you something. The quiet, simple way that you work and live day to day out there in that cabin reminds me greatly of a movie titled The Old Man in the Cottage from 1996.
Anyways, I deeply admire all that you do. I sincerely hope and trust you are being driven by the good Lord above to do these good works (the cabin yes, but also, the sharing) Remember, you are forever innocent and forever loved. Thank you so much for all that you do. God Bless my brother.

You are ahead of the ballgame in the first place. You worked and owned a construction business so the techniques and know-how is easily transferable. I have never constructed a house but I have done some woodworking projects so I think with some instruction (anything on the web would be a viable and valuable resource) I could build a log cabin. But I do admire what you have accomplished even with hand tools. I am not so sure that all my abilities could line up with the same tools. I think some power tools would bee needed by me. I enjoy your build, insight and your thoughts.

In the spirit of Dick Proenekke.

Shawn, Dick is one of the greatest, he understood life, how meaningful it is, how it should not be taken for granted, to realize and to notice the simple things. He learn as you have and me as well not to get caught up in the husle and busle of modern society. Take the time when you see a sun rise or a moose feeding to sit and reflect on what is important, my family, my wife, my two girls, my grandson, and my dog Simon, every things else is just material.

Thank you for bringing the German book to our attention. I have been using, and am very happy with How to Build and Furnish a Log Cabin by W. Ben Hunt, first edition 1939. A concise book, which contains everything one needs to know for a simple build. Pity we don't see any books on log cabin building by Scandinavian authors, as they have unsurpassed knowledge on the subject and are the best in the trade by far. Merry Christmas!

Hermann Phleps seems to have written an awesome, illustrated, evocative book on building with solid wood and solid wood joinery. I went right from your video to buy a copy: the book is no longer in print and copies that are available fetch prices that make sense to professionals but are an indulgence for armchair reading. I will probably not be able to resist buying one after Christmas.

I live in NYC and dream of escaping this madness. Watching your videos is a pleasure and pushes me to come up with my own plans for the future. I don't want to be off grid, but aim to be as self-sufficient as possible, and now I am also planning on having a little log cabin as a guest house/escape on our future dream property: ) Looking forward to many more videos from you!
