Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new host of Kitchen Gadgets: Esther Choi, chef-owner of Ms. Yoo and Mok Bar in NYC. Esther is here today to see if a 150 dollar fish skinning device called a Skinzit can beat out her handy knife work

You have a restaurant. you REALLY need to practice and use the CORRECT knife in filleting ie: Fish fillet knife Secondlywhy would you remove the skin? some of the reasons is that is where the flavor is, where the fatty goodness and omegas hide, especially in salmon. The skin of a salmon contains the highest concentration of omega-3 fatty acids on the fish. Theres strong evidence that these fatty acids can reduce triglyceride levels and decrease your chances of heart disease, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cooking fillets with the skin on can also keep nutrients and oils inside the salmon itself that might otherwise be lost in the preparation process.

This is nonsense. Nobody uses a chefs knife to skin fish and if you did, you would not use the technique used here. Use a thin-bladed knife, angle it slightly down and pull the fillet over the knife while pressing the broad side of the knife down. Everyone with minimal experience would know this. The results would be equivalent and the time saved not having to clean the gadget would tip the scales to the already owned knife.

Esther sucks at skinning fish with a knife. I feel like the average person who went in trying to skin a fish would at least do a quick search on how to and pick up basic techniques. She just stretched and tear the meat off the skin. So it is not comparable at all. With that said the gadget actually did a great job skinning fish.

Its too expensive for people who dont eat enough fish but there the ones that would need it. Ive been filleting fish my whole life and if you use the right knife its easy to do efficiently. You also recommended this for people who eat fish a lot but those people most likely have become proficient with just a knife

It's so weird how they do simple things so badly. I mean obviously you are supposed to use a fillet knife for this! And why does she stop the skinning with the machine just a second too early so that she has to pull the very end of the skin off by force! Why not just let the god damn machine do its job?

Thanks Esther. Not everyone is a chef and knows how to do things perfectly, except for everyone commenting in here, so I enjoyed your review and was impressed by that thing but ill never buy it because I don't skin enough fish. I'll do exactly what you did with my knife.

Comments are all about her knife skills, but what about her hygiene skills? Wiping down a small part of this tool that is clearly covered in fish bits won't clean it, not to mention that she touched the handle after touching fish. She owns a restaurant FFS!

I'd invest in one of those things if I owned a restaurant, cuz it does seem like it'd be faster than the knife if you're aiming to save as much fish as possible, but for just at home cooking, I'll stick to the knife and take a bit more time

but if you eat fish 3-4 times a week you would probably figure out how to skin a fish cleanly quickly and the gadget that needs signifcantly cleaning and to be plugged in is probably just overkill. the gadget did an amazing job though

Disliked. Used the wrong knife, made zero effort to learn the technique and moaned she lost to a gadget. Also has it become fashionable to show conspicuous religious symbols while wearing the Vegeta's armour on a cooking show?
