Washington, D. C. is home to the largest Ethiopian community in the U. S. Seeking educational opportunities, as well as refuge from political upheaval, three successive waves of Ethiopian immigrants settled in the nations capital in the second half of the 20th century. As the community grew, Ethiopian restaurants, markets, and cafes became fixtures of the Shaw and Adams Morgan neighborhoods, and later of Silver Spring, MD and Falls Church, VA. In this guide, well take you to some of the businesses keeping Ethiopian food traditions alive in the nations capital, and share some of the staples of Ethiopian cuisine to try along the way including tangy fermented breads, vegan vegetable platters, and spicy meat stews. Watch the video, read the local history, listen to the voices of business owners and community leaders, and taste the distinctive dishes of one of D. C. s biggest cultural enclaves

Hey all, I am an Ethiopian who is living in Europe for the last 27 years and I was in Italy too. Pizza is good but it realy depends how and by whom it is made like evry food. I ate in Italy home made pizza, it was good but when I compare with Ethiopian home made food then Ethiopian food beat pizza 10: 0. Belive me those Ethiopian restaurants in Western countries by any means can not cook original Ethiopian food and dish. But if you test the original food it is absoloutly diffrent song than a pizza which is very simple to made it while some Ethiopian dishes which are made can take like 4 houres or more like Doro wot. So please do not compare diffrent things.

Ethiopian food always tastes spoiled and sour to me. I don't like it or the messy eating from a communal plate with bare hands. Pizza is never that sloppy and unpleasant. It won't be replaced in the US. None of the expensive Ethiopian restaurants I've been to are hospitable. They're not friendly people and service is bad. All but one of at least four Ethiopian restaurants here has closed and the grimy survivor is in a sketchy neighborhood that doesn't attract outsiders.

As an Ethiopian, i will say it won't be as popular until they turn it into fast food, like Pizza. Pizza is popular because, it's less messy, requires no talent to make, and Italians have been in America since the 1800s, Ethiopians came in the 1990s, for goodness sake. Most Americans have no patience so fast food is their specialty. Ruin the food and it will become popular. Just ask Italians from Italy. They will tell you American Pizza is horrendously bad.

My Ethiopian friend in college took me to this Ethiopian restaurant. I really enjoyed the food, and EVERYONE I have taken there since, has enjoyed the food. The way the spiced food goes with beer is amazing - I've never enjoyed beer so much, with any other food. Ethiopian is definitely in my top 3 favorite ethnic foods. Very tasty, with just the right amount of spice. It's on the healthy side too. I am surprised it's not more popular.

haha she said in Ethiopia we live together, we sleep together, we eat together. wow that's one big lie. you do that if they are only family member, if not you better get out of their way, unless you might lose your head. everyone is mean and truthfully speaking, they best know how to pretend to be nice but the first to kill you in a heartbeat so don't you trust when they smile!

check Outside their store, I bet you there is a homeless Ethiopian person begging for food or shelter, but let along they don't give a crap about that human being outside their property. so please don't tell the world, you eat, sleep, share. that's one damn thing that Ethiopian don't do, unless they get something like a favor in return! truth

For those who are turned off by the sharing aspect, ask your server for an extra plate. They always have smaller plates for those who are new to Ethiopian food and are uncomfortable, I assume they hold off on it until someone asks. But the whole point is to share as a family, because food tastes best when shared with the ones you love.

I love Ethiopian food as I'm eating some right now. (Leftovers. It has to be one of the most healthiest food. The bread is loaded with nutrients and I always feel better eating this food. Not to mention the doctor says I lack protein, and iron in my diet and that I have a low blood sugar. I should start making Ethiopian dishes at home.

As a New Yorker I hate to say it bu tthe DMV is what NYC should be. Unfortunately NYC has become a yuppie/billionaire/millionaire hideout, while many of the ethnic are leaving the area including NJ at an unforeseen pace. We have no culture, old overpriced infastructure and buildings. I miss working and living in DC.

Change the title, because you're going to get a lot of negative comments from the pizza obsessed community. Something like Why Ethiopian food is killing the game in DC or whatever. There are already negative comments comparing pizza to Ethiopian food (a whole cuisine) that's overshadowing the video.
