In defiance of reason, good taste and the laws of both god and man, your pals The Besties sat down and recorded a two-hour-and-forty-five-minute battle royale to decide the best game of 2017. Get comfy, get hydrated. Games discussed: Yes

The amount of credit these guys give PuBG is, not irritating, but more humorously frustrating. I get it-s their list, their opinions, their likes and dislikes, but the fact that the main point in their arguments for the game is -it-s a ground-braking new take on the shooter genre- is a bit ridiculous. Arena shooters/Battle royale games have existed for a hell of a long time. I mean shit guys, Minecraft had an entire custom game that was essentially PuBG since the first hunger games movie came out. Of course PuBG is ONE of the first full arena shooter game. H1z1 existed, but it-s not revolutionary. It-s just a game that-s scratching an itch for an admittedly amazing game concept. It is the best arena shooter out there currently yes, I just don-t think it-s a good game personally, it just has a big enough player base to remain relevant due to lack of competition. It-s a pretty fun bad game I guess is my point. I can-t wait for a much better made clone of the game to come out.

I love polygon and I love awful squad and there were a few mentions on here I made a note of so I can check out but. Man, the fact you can have private servers should have been a bigger factor. I know it's your guys' list, but you're basically arguing a game that literally almost no one else can play, because it does completely change how you can approach and play the game when you can have a private server, should be contender for game of the year. So I don't know, as a listener, it's really frustrating to hear you argue about this. That is not a game I can really play. It's almost singularly a game you guys can play. Destiny etc we can all have that group experience, and so on. But pubg and what private servers give you definitely had an impact on what your experiences were like.

My difficulty with the way Nier: A used my time was not so much the needing to re-play as the pacing of what information you got when. I bogged down midway through the second -playthrough- in large part because I felt like all the big -reveals- of the second run were so heavily hinted at in the subtext of the first playthough that they weren't giving me new information, but rather just taking things I already knew and spelling them out more explicitly. Add to that the fact that the gameplay of the second run-through was less fun than the first (the hacking minigames got old fast) and there just wasn't anything to keep me going in a year with so many other great games to be playing.

my god thank you griffin for giving divinity: original sin 2 its due. i felt justin was being really unfair about it; personal taste i understand, but a lot of the criticism he had towards it seemed to be just against the genre itself and doesn't really hold beyond his own preferences for experiences in gaming
like personally i had no preconceived taste for this style of game as i'd never played a turn-based rpg, and it is not something you need to get into the game
anyway it's all fair at the end of the day. it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea

I feel like I'm the only person in the world that bought Breath Of The Wild and just couldn't get into it. I just found it too unstructured I guess. Like, that kind of game is definitely my thing, but I just didn't like that one. I know it must be a good game, because so many other people like it - but I just didn't feel anything when playing it. I've done like 5 hours on it, then it's just sitting gathering dust since then.
For me, there has never been a game like NieR: Automata. I'm really surprised that they were kind of mean about it.

I dunno if PubG is even worth talking about to this long of an extent. Huge maps with a bunch of dudes has been explored a lot with battlefield games, putting a bunch of weapons and drops on the maps is a staple of arena shooters. You're mostly making an arena shooter out of a battlefield game, and without the players, the experience immediately becomes meaningless. It feels like a very basic kind of game to put out, and an incredibly temporary one beyond that.

when it comes to switch games, I feel like game reviewers have a different experience than most regular gamers. most of us don't travel that frequently to where that's our main way of playing games. not to crash against you guys, but just saying that it's a different experience
great lost overall, but I am kind of bummed that Hollow Night, Life is Strange: BTS, and Night in the Woods seemed to be ignored by every major publication: /

Despite all the stress they caused Justin, I immensely enjoyed listening to everyone's fully fleshed-out arguments for each and every game. I know that the worry is that people won't sit through 3/4 of it and thus you won't get the view counts, but I think the real Polygon fans will eat this up. That view counter is your real fans, quantified. Love you guys!

Can I just say I don't understand why people complain about rain in botw? Just build a campfire under an overhang or something and you can skip it. Although 99% of the time I just unequip everything metal for a few minutes until the rain goes away and work on something other than climbing for a short while without having to skip time at all.

I really enjoyed the philosophical nug this boiled down to; just a good, solid bit of discussion about what games mean to different people, what they meant for this year, and how they're shaping up for the future. It was an engaging two hours and jfc I wish I had the money/time to play even a third of these

I know this is maybe a little bit of toxic ground to tread on rn given the community, but Destiny 2 to me was the complete opposite of Destiny 1's strengths. Like, if you told me in August I would play 100 hours and never feel like I was grinding, I would probably have cancelled my pre-order lmao.

Breath of the wild really is an amazing game. I have put about 200 hours into it, and still everytime I log on there is something new and interesting and gripping to do, and it's just such a hard and rewarding game. If you have not played it I really urge you to do so, you will not be disappointed.

This was such a great episode, I spent yesterday listening to it. Justin's comments about Mario Odyssey hit -exactly- upon why I loved it so much. It was the exact game I needed in 2017. When I hit the credits, I cried, I was so overcome with all the joy it brought me. -

I-m sad they discounted Metroid so quickly. I mean I get it, it-s certainly not game of the year. I just loved it so much I would-ve loved more conversation on it. But I-m a Metroid fanboy so I-m biased towards it. This makes me want to try nier automata tho
reply

I found odyssey really tedious. usually feel spot on with Griffin but this one must of went over my head. My experience was very much like Joesph Anderson's new video, meh and overused content.

I love the way these types of videos are edited (I think by Clayton? Go Clayton) with the little polygon pumps when they speak. Really cute and clever, and aesthetically pleasing too!

-Let's not tear into each other's games, and instead just discuss what makes our games /good/-
not even a minute later and I hear passive aggressive comments against nier

Listening through for my first time, i really hope to hear about Night in the Woods, or warframe somewhere in the mix, i dont think itll come up, but heres hoping!

Justin seems to hate this podcast and giraffes, but I like this podcast and giraffes. Justin, could you make an effort? Just go with it man, it's fun to listen to.

I know nobody else cares about this but -The Mother We Share- by CHVRCHES's guitar is a funny goof considering there's no guitar in -The Mother We Share- by CHVRCHES.

-Dead Cells fans: - PS4, Switch, XBone editions confirmed! I haven't played the game but it sounds fantastic and I'll probably get it when it comes to switch
reply

Justin complaining about someone eating a Cliff Bar while setting up their video when he plays his guitar every Awful Squad is pretty ironic.

Wow. I am actually the first comment. Time to scream into the void.
GRIFFIN THEY MADE A CEREAL AMIIBO JUST FOR YOU #BringBackTheCorner

PUBG is not that good. so tired of it
It feels like every time these guys talk about it they're doing it to promote their videos

reply

Yo, where is the love for Hollow Knight? its a masterpiece of a 2D game with just as much hand drawn love as Cuphead.
