Irish dancer of 12-13 years of dancing here. The competitive Irish dance world looks very different to what was shown in this video (it's way more intense that what those little kids were doing) and is also very different to the performance style that I think a lot more of the general public are familiar with. Competitive or performance - both are very difficult but definitely go watch some videos of the championship dancers. This video also didn't mention another key thing that makes Irish dance difficult; the fact that you have to be on releve the whole time (with a few exceptions for some moves. This includes when landing jumps and leaps.

I was honestly surprised even traditional ballet was number 1 Ive been doing it for years! I can understand pointe though I stayed in for one of the pointe classes after one of my normal classes to see if it would be a good fit for me. It was not as soon as it was over I was like yeah I dont know about this one. Also tap dance was one of the other ones Ive taken over the years. Eventually the moves got too fast for me to keep up with everyone else so much so that my teachers and the other staff noticed and suggested I drop it. Which was the only time theyve ever done that with me.

Im in my 40s and began taking lessons at Arthur Murray last year after a break (Ive been taking various styles, including swing, salsa, zydeco, hip hop, and belly dancing since my 20s. They talked me into performing a solo. I invited my mom and boyfriend, neither of whom had seen me do partner dancing before. I learned an Argentine tango routine and actually won a mirrorball trophy! My own personal Dancing With the Stars moment. Students perform solos at various events as others cheer them on. Its SUCH a great feeling. Cannot recommend taking lessons highly enough!

I've so far tried 7/10 of these, haven't done Zaouli yet and think i'll skip Sayaw Sa Banko and Aerial dance as i am so scared of heights and falling! I think Poledance could ahve had a spot in there replacing Capoeria as it's really martial arts disguised as a dance: ) Ballet is definitely the hardest but they make it look so easy and it's incredibly detailed and challenging! Musically Flamenco beats ( not all of them) are the hardest to get!

I have been dancing for almost 20 years, mostly ballet, but also flamenco, salsa, swing, lyrical, aerial, and belly dance, I had instructors compare professional ballet dancers to high endurance athletes, and they truly are. I may not entirely agree with the order in this ranking but I do believe ballet totally deserves the Number one. Also Shakira is not the most representative of belly dance, just the most popular.

Just to tell you that tango argentino is also in UNESCO list since 2009: )
There are 2 tango types: tango de pista that is completely improvised and danced in tango balls and tango escenario that is choreography. Inside these types you have a lot of different styles. It's better to have a look on world championship in order to have an idea of this dance as in the video it's not represented very good.

I'm Japanese, and my Dad was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. He told me that all the white women wanted to dance with him because he could Jitterbug and swing the best. I loved dancing, too.
Though I never learned to jitterbug or swing. These dancers are excellent
Thanks for putting this video together. Dancing gives you a runner's high. Good exercise too.

Do I agree with your list? Ummmmm no. The fact that Bharatnatyam isn't even on here means you were pulling stuff out of nowhere. This dance is hard enough as is but includes sign language and dozens of just separate eye movements. As a former ballet dancer I'm shocked it was number 1, I can name 5 different dance styles from India alone that are harder than ballet.

I think Thailands Khon Masked Dance at least deserves an honorable mention. To tell the story of the Ramakien (Thailands version of the Ramayana, not only do the dancers have to be graceful, they need to use specific movements to fully embody their character types (such as humans, monkeys, and ogres. This dance is all done in elaborate costumes as well.

Ummm. The list is alright, although Irish dance can be danced in uneven groups too, like trios, it's just more common to have solo, duet and even groups (as in most if not all of ceili dances. Also showing the show dance (which allows for more liberties) and little kids doesn't compare to the real professionals, damn, they are almost inhuman: o

When I was in high school, part of gym class was dedicated to learning various dances. The best swing partner I ever had was a deaf kid. He tore up that floor like it was rice paper. Let it never ever EVER be said that not being able to hear music means one cannot possibly have exceptional rhythm.

First of all Cuba is the salsa capital of the world and its where salsa was born. Secondly Capoeira is not a dance, its a martial art only! Other than that great video, I agree with most of what you are saying. Although I would have added cha cha or samba to the top 10!

I would like to suggest la danza de las botellas or the bottle dance. Is a traditional Paraguayan dance, when the girls hold wine bottles in their heads, and the most skilled dancers can hold up to 10+ bottles in their head, one over the other, without stop dancing.

Your research fell terribly short. Have you heard of Indian Classical dance? Not one but as many as 9-10 different forms of dance styles in just one country. It takes years and years of practice to master them. disappointed that you didn't even mention one.

Different forms of dance are challenging to different people.
Ballet is structured, and therefore; easier for me to grasp, whilst modern/pop/hip hop/etc. -- the more free form styles of dance (and faster styles as well, are vastly more difficult for me.

Surprised not to see any indian classical or folk dances included. I mean there's chhau dance, bamboo dance, kathkali, bharatnatyam etc. Which could have been on the list. But I understand that indians probably are lower on your target audiences.

Excuse me but you are wrong or incomplete. The historic origin of ballet, tango, belly dance and flamenco are the traditional sacred dances, 5, 000 years old of India: Khataj, Kuchipudi and others, and they are more demanding than ballet

I am disappointed that ballet wasn't showcased, I speak from experience. Dancing en pointe, in my country's most precious academy. It is one of the hardest if not the hardest type of dance on the planet.

Is it a fact Irish dance originated when England governed and prohibited Irish from [practicing all rites of their ancestral culture? The foot stomping was a share of joy, the arms were stilled.

I think its depends on initial physical abilities. I learned ballet and could do split in 2 weeks, pointe took 1, 5 month. I'm sure it will be much longer if I tried step or break dancing

It was a nice surprise to see Zaouli dancing on this list, and at Number 3. I didn't know it existed until just over a year ago, but it is really something else, when done right.

2: 41 as an Irish woman, I happen to have a fun fact on Irish dancing! The Riverdance was first performed in 1994, as the interval act in the Eurovision song contest that year.

sorry for being like picky but 'break dancing' isn't the official term for that dance. It's actually just 'breaking', the media and tv changed it throughout history.
