Registering WinRAR in 2021: How Far Back Does It Work?

Nobody registers WinRAR. So let's register WinRAR! It's notorious for its infinite 40-day trial so I've been curious what activating it is actually like. I also wonder how old of a version of WinRAR can be activated using a 2021 registration key! Let's find out with Windows XP, 98, 95

it's because the developer was smart, he bypassed the serial system and went direct for a deposit to the registry much like AnyDVD from SlySoft back when I purchased it.
It makes it a lot more easier for the user because they didn't have to try to enter letters and numbers along with their email only for it to. be deposited into the registry anyway, the registry key is just a text file with. reg, you can have a server create archives on the fly and with winrar, all you need to do is tell it to only scan for the registry when the values are set, sort of an if or else values.
Very easy for the customer and simple for the developer to troubleshoot.
You can even double click the. reg file and bypass the whole process and have it ready before you even install winrar.

I sold dodgy copies of WinRar on eBay years ago, and I got a 'could you please stop' email from WinRAR. Wasn't a nasty email, or a huge slap on the wrist - just a polite email saying what I was doing was wrong, and if I did stop, they'd give me a legit copy to not put any more copies on eBay. For such a big company (at the time) it seemed a 'small guy' thing to do. WinRAR could have gone all Microsoft and slapped lawsuits, etc, but they did it nicely. A nice company all in all.

I used WinAce for a long time, but then eventually switched to WinRAR. and registration of both. I had done one registration for v5. 3, but when I went to upgrade, it didn't work. Contacting WinRAR support, my key was for just the one version, but newer registrations worked as a permament license, without version limitations. was able to get a discount, and a new key, so I have a v5. 3 and a current version independent keys now: )

This video got me thinking that travelers from the future can definitely leave stuff like this and it will work with nowadays software. I know it sounds crazy but yeah, would be a good plot for a movie. A movie where main character needs to hide a valuable activation key by sending it years and decades back in the past. Only that it still works with 2021 technology ha!

this sorta tech history, while I have zero computer skills really to speak of and such, always fascinates me. I remember having to look over old VHS recorded data on some very fancy and expensive SONY equipment for it. And ooold computer with ancient adobe premiere etc. So many deep dives into old forums to learn and figure out why something didn't work as supposed to etc.

If you have the rarreg. key file in the same directory as the installer the installer will copy the rarreg. key file into the installation directory silently unless there is already a rarreg. key file in the target directory.
All WinRAR does on start-up is check for that key file, remove or rename it and it goes back to evaluation copy.

Back in the day, this was the easiest application to -crack- on a windows box. At that time a lot of websites showed you how to reverse engineer these simple apps. and it was just a matter of switching a JNE to JE (jump if not equal to jump if equal) instruction in the binary. Took me usually 5 minutes to do so. Damn. the old days.

the only reason many of us probably use winrar in the first place is all those rar files online, that came from certain sites. i liked the rar format for my own archives because of the recovery % zip files used to fail (esp back in the day when i was using floppies, and zipdrive) so that recovery % saved my butt many times

The majority of the data in the key file isn't even used anymore since WinRAR 5. 00.
in versions 3. 00 - 4. 20 you could -sign- a RAR archive using your key:
This would add the original archive name, your own name (from the license keyfile) as well as the timestamp when the archive was created, to the archive.

I've never understood piracy. If you can afford the software. I registered it back in the mid 2000s. Even though it was already a running joke. It worked as intended, I constantly used it, and I wanted to support developers that made a decent product and didn't penalize users who couldn't afford it.
